Allera had no idea what was happening, but stared at the “Variance” thing accusingly as if they did.

“Conditions?” They clicked their tongue in thought. “Maybe ‘don’t kill anyone’ is a good start.”

Though you mentioned earlier that your stone cost lives...

Ayia didn't draw attention to that. "I agree, that's a good start. Right now, I think the worst case scenario is that Variance is what an old friend of mine would refer to as a 'Backstabber,' but due to the conditions on which their imprisonment is managed, I also think it's quite probable that we could set our own conditions to maintain order in their release. For example, 'do not bring harm to anyone' would be more direct and impactful than 'don't kill anyone,' especially considering this guy isn't living or dead... if Variance was evil, then loopholes could be drawn to the difference between living and dead."

“Sure.”

Allera is decidedly not genre savvy. At least not in this kind of situation.

Hm. "Well, he said he could help you, right? In what ways would you want him to do that?"

“Hm. He could provide a more… sustainable place for me to hide. And protection, if he’s as powerful as he says.”

What is the reason for establishing these conditions? I feel I should tell you that I am in no way bound to any promises I make in exchange for freedom.

I don't believe I ever said anything about my power. But I can try to protect you.

Ayia turned back to Variance. "Righto. So how do we free you, mr. ghost sir?"

"You seem like an honest guy though."

I am not a ghost, nor am I a man.

Again, the voice was no annoyed. It simply made a statement.

I will be freed if you take me willingly from this world.

Allera looked from Variance to Ayia. Setting the thing free would be gambling with not only Allera’s life, but, if Ayia was to be believed, the lives of everyone in the galaxy.

On the other hand, it could mean safety, or even freedom. Allera had been running for so long they’d almost forgotten what those things felt like.

Allera clicked their tongue.

“Let’s do it.”

Variance isn't visible, by the way.

Thank you. You have no idea how long I've been hoping for this.

Some of the emotion Variance had displayed in the chase crept back into their voice, though this time profound relief instead of torment and agony.

“Follow me.” They gestured the pair deeper into the hideout, picking up the torch from where they’d dropped it and re-lighting it.

I’m just gonna say they had the torch this whole time and dropped it when Variance grabbed them. The cave’s dark; it’s the only way they could see where they were going when flying away.

Variance did so, following as a scattered patch of strange, fuzzy spot at the edge of their vision.

Are we skipping forward to... wherever we're going?

Yeah. It’s just back to the hideout.

The three of them arrived back at the main hideout a couple minutes later. It was disconcerting to have Variance at the edge of their vision; it felt like when they looked at the sun and it left an impression on their vision; only, it didn’t fade.

Allera realized that there was probably no point in hiding their real name anymore now that Ayia knew about the bounty. “I’m Allera.” To Ayia: “Lyri is my childhood nickname. I didn’t want to tell you my real name; I’m kind of… infamous around here.”

“That’s a long story, and you still haven’t told me how you got here, so how about we get our mysterious, possibly evil power off the planet first, then talk.” They lifted their mattress, rummaging around beneath it.
