It’s pretty out of the way. I’d say it’s reasonable there’s no public spaceports there. But if you know where to look, you can get off the planet.

“Hell,” whispered Allera. Turning to Ayia: “Mage. Go. Now.” They grabbed two strips of dried meat and flew for their life back towards the cave’s exit.

The static suddenly grew sharp, and strange tones could be heard in the background. It sounded like a wail, terribly sad.

"Nani?"

It was a word she'd picked up from Martin's old archives. Something called japanese?

Ayia figured that the grumpy bird lady knew what she was doing, jogging along after them.

Well that's a little strange...

No no no nononono

They flew faster. Was this where it ended? Alone; remembered only by people who hated them?

I wonder what your character thinks this is.

The static wailing grew louder, and the air colder, unbearably so. Their eyes seemed to dance with strange spots. The cries sounded so pained and sorrowful.

Wailing and static in her ears, spots in her eyes... some kind of siren, maybe? Or some kind of regional equivalent, anyways. "Do you know what that thing is?" Ayia shouted ahead, though she kind of doubted that the bird lady could hear it.

They assume, with good reason, that anything magic is someone trying to kill them.

Winged have good hearing.

“No! Just run!”

That seemed like a good enough explanation to her. Blast, this day really couldn't get much weirder...

Still, it was as good a time as any to bring out her Line again. Extending from a bubble of nothing came a thick wire of dark metal, shooting into the darkness of the cave like a viper - and with a quick glance behind her Ayia leapt atop the Line, crouching to let the wind blow around her. Friction vanished upon her contact with the Line, her momentum from the run carrying her along in an unimpeded line up and through the cavern.

The spots suddenly seemed to rush away and group together, forming an image. It was a fuzzy projection of a person, clothed in black robes, head bowed, standing ahead of them. It held out its hands toward them, as if signaling for them to stop. In seemed that the wails came from that form, and they were ear-splittingly loud.

To be clear, nothing is actually stopping them from leaving.

Allera didn’t stop, shooting a jet of flame at the figure from their claw as they flew.

The flame passed through the figure, doing nothing except apparently startling it.

Ayia opted to be a little less irreverent of the specter, but passed it by as well regardless.

It quickly turned and began to ran after them, only to collapse to the ground and dissolve in a swarm of strange spots. As the pair continued to run, the cold began to subside, and the wailing grew quieter, though increasingly agonized.

“Keep going,” Allera whispered to Ayia. “We don’t stop until we’re off this hailing planet.”

The wails seemed to fade away, and so did the artifacts in their vision.

Suddenly, something grabbed Allera's wing(?). It felt like a hand, but it was cold as ice.

Allera doesn’t have arms.

What... Sorry I forgot and usually that's an easy assumption. I'll update it, because I think it's wings?

Yeah. They’re dexterous enough to essentially function as arms, though.

Allera screamed and tried to twist away.

The grip was absurdly tight, and held fast. The form was there, looking up at Allera. Its face, which was previously hidden, was streaked with red. It appeared to be crying blood.

The static became audible again, and there was a faint whisper barely recognizable as speech. Please...

I'm not entirely certain, but the way I think about it now is that while the thing is projected as a weird artifact of their vision, it stays consistent for both of them.

What.

Allera twisted harder, a shrill shriek emanating from their beak.

Ayia zipped up beside the thing and swiped at it with a metal quarterstaff.

The staff passed through the form, fuzzing slightly in the spots where it and the thing overlapped in her vision.

Please don't leave me here.

“Mage trickery!” Allera yelled. “Don’t fall for it!” They kept resisting the thing’s grip.
