Splintered Odium?

Seons and Skaze were created when the shards of that planet were Shattered.  Spren are a natural part of Roshar's ecosystem, they predate Honor's shattering and the animal version even predate Adonalsium's Shattering.

For Odium, yes he would have just needed to carve chunks of himself off to make pure Voidspren.  But I think he preferred not to, so instead he made a bunch of Ghost-spren from singers, and later took normal spren and Enlightened them (both of which probably took a lot less of Himself, since he started with other raw materials).

Spren are the splinters of Honor and Cultivation. Shard intentionally separates a tiny bit of his power and creates a splinter. This doesn't truly weaken a Shard, as their power is nearly infinite. Creating Cognitive Shadows like Fused and Returned also is done by deliberate splintering of Shard's power.

Spren on Roshar were not created during Honor's Splintering. They were there before, they were there even before Adonalsium Shattering. They are made of Honor's and Cultivation's mixed powers. Odium has his own spren so he did splinter himself.

So if a person's holding a Shard, someone like the original sixteen people. Some of the Shards got [Splintered], does that automatically kill the people? Or can some of those people still be walking around?

Brandon Sanderson

It does not automatically, because you can give up pieces of investiture and things like this. It did kill them, that was part of the point. But there are ways to conceive of this happening that it wouldn't. Technically what Endowment is doing is giving up pieces, intentionally Splintering to form these other pieces and things, so yeah.

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah the Divine Breath is a gift of Investiture directly to the...basically they are being given a large Splinter of Endowment.

Questioner

But is it the size?

Brandon Sanderson

The size is important, to make that happen, yeah.

Questioner

To make it happen?

Brandon Sanderson

To make it happen, yeah. To make them come back and to do the things but...there is obviously some leakage there when they basically taking a Cognitive Sh...they have to create a Cognitive Shadow of the spirit, right. Which requires some work, and then to push that back into the body and get it to stick requires some work as well. You'll see that with Szeth it isn't sticking very well.

Questioner

*inaudible*

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah Szeth is not a Cognitive Shadow, he actually got stuck back in but the soul is not sticking very well to the body

Questioner

Brandon Sanderson

That's what she's saying.

Alder…. You’re saying that Spren are splinters of Honor and Cultivation but existed before Honor or Cultivation existed…

I’m assuming we are saying that primal Spren existed before but that Higher Spren needed some investiture/splintering from a Shard… Maybe any fully Sapient Spren needs this?

Yes, because back then they were splinters of Adonalsium. His investiture existed everywhere, he created Roshar and invested it. When he was Shattered, investiture was splintered to 16 equal parts, and associated with a Shard. Investiture of every Shard is spread across the whole Cosmere. Honor and Cultivation decided to settle on Roshar and invested it, making majority of Roshar's investiture originate from them. They also created sprens - like Honorspren or Cultivationspren, which I doubt existed in the days of Adonalsium.

We don't know what kind of spren existed in the days of Adonalsium, but it is still likely that Adonalsium created fully sapient spren (similar to Honorspren). It might not even be intentional, as investiture tents to develop sapience on its own. Every spren is a piece of Shard’s investiture. So even Angersprens are made of Shard's investiture, they just likely have less of it than Honorspren.
