"I'd rather you didn't." He still had that goofy grin on his face. "How old are you, by the way?"

"Seventeen." Should I..? I should. I know I told them I wouldn't, but if they met this guy... no, no, no. Stop thinking like that. Bad thoughts, go away.

What is she thinking about?

"Me too! Um... how's your relationship with your parents?"

Jay chuckled through their conversation. It's been a while...this should be fun. He thought, wandering over to their fire. He turned to Abihal with another grin. "Did I hear you say that you don't have a boyfriend?"

Isa watched the scene unfolding with a smirk on her face. If those two were going to be at each other’s throats the entire time they were here, then this could be very entertaining.

Strolling up to the group, she chirpily nodded to them all in turn. “So, you guys are all here because you got that envelope thing, right?”

She shot a look at the two boys asking about love lives. “And yes, I’m taken, so don’t even bother asking.”

“Stars and…” she grabbed her head. “This is the most I’ve sworn in three months.”

Some power that I haven’t figured out yet.

“Yes,” she said, teeth clenched, face red. “Why is everyone picking on me?”

"Oh, get over yourself. I have no interest in either of you."

She bit her tongue hard. “Look, I’m very wound up, so I suggest you get out of here before I do something you’ll regret.”

"Right. You'd risk attacking someone in this setting? Anyway, you'd probably have a hard time of it if you tried."

“I should just shut you up,” she grumbled. “I can’t believe this.”

Do we know exactly how the shapeshifting stuff works?

"Who knows? Maybe I'm trying to throw you off. Or maybe this is just how I am."

Yeah, but I decided to use something different for this character.

She rubbed a blue stone on a chain around her neck to calm herself. “I’m sorry. I’m not usually so snappy—it’s this whole thing. I mean, I don’t know if we’re supposed to kill each other, and I don’t want to do that, but I also don’t want to die. It’s easier to be mad, sometimes.”

Par blanched, and each bag fell to the floor with a thump, one after the other. "Kill each other?"

“I’m scared—maybe that’s why we’re all here.” She shuddered, then rubbed the pendant again. “I’m sure it’s not that, but I can’t help worrying.”

Par quickly recovered himself, though true fear had crossed his expression for a moment. He began gathering up his dropped beanbags. "Well, for what it's worth, I wouldn't kill you. Or anyone."

“Useful to know. Thanks.” She looked around the hall. Wish I could pull out my flute… but I can never just play. Always gotta add more harmonies, countermelodies…

So how does the shapeshifting work? Was it explained?

"You're welcome. Do you have any friends?"

Yeah, I’ll grab it for you

“Debatably, yes. Technically, no.”

"Well, that's unfortunate. I would offer, but I doubt there will be many friend-making opportunities as we do... whatever it is we will be doing."

“If we’re acquainted, and we don’t kill each other, that’s friend enough for me.”

"That's an unfortunately low standard."

“Yeah, well, you acquire priorities depending on who you are, I guess.”

While all of this was going on, a small woman was sitting in the corner, mixing several fluids together. Eventually, she held up a glass flask of a viscous, green-tinted mixture and put it away.
