"And that's good." Kris went a whole second before rushing to correct himself. "Taking care of him, I mean! Not... not the abandoned part."

"...Yes. Least I could do."

“Research. I’m only barely exaggerating when I say that research is what’s keeping me alive.”

The city council had recently unveiled the brand-new rail trolley down the center of main street, running off of an entire rooftop garden of various technically-placed bushes and flowers to clatter along a pair of iron bars laid into the street. So far it had been remarkably successful despite the near daily breakdowns from various disturbances - but, after all, that was what the conductor was paid there to manage. Kris had actually been planning on taking a more orthodox means to the magniporter station, but figured that this massive group of depressed-looking children and teenagers could use a little trolley ride down a cobblestone street.

They still wound up walking after it broke down two minutes in, but it was nice while it lasted.

At the station they were stuck back in a long line of backed-up patrons and wealthy partygoers, as one of the cornerpots had to be replaced. The manager had apologized profusely to everyone for the inconvenience, but by the strain in his voice it sounded less like a mishap and more like neglect on some worker's part. Kris always had found it strange how a world so centered on constant and consistent care of so many diverse species of plant could be so negligent at times, but he supposed that was just the beauty of imperfection.

While they waited, he glanced down at all his companions and asked, "So what even brought you to join such a mission anyways?"

"Well, you let me stay here forever, and you were so nice to me. So I wanted to help you," Gone said.

"So... what exactly is the plan here again?" Cufre asked. He seemed a little disconcerted by the whole situation.

@Channelknight Fadran

Kris pepped up onto his tiptoes to see if he could spot the magniporters in the other room over the crowds. "Fastest way to anywhere is through porter stations. Kinda. Obviously you can just walk down to the store or whatever, but the mountain's a good several hundred acre-lengths away. This'll get us there in seconds rather than days."

"Oh. Okay, that's--- wow."

"Well, I wasn't really aware of... all this."

"Most people aren't. In fact, the Macrosmos is... kind of nonexistent, in that sense." Kris tapped his foot. "While there are an infinite amount of universes tied to this grand web of connected existence, I imagine there are also infinite that are completely isolated. Meaning in a sense, the Macrosmos doesn't exist until you become a part of it."

"I still don't think I get it."

After waiting a few extra minutes as a wealthy-looking lady partook in a seemingly pointless argument with the border guard, they finally wove their way far enough down the line to produce their own tickets. Kris had prepared a large stockpile of these several weeks in advance for this very day, and was honestly a little disappointed that three or four of them were going to waste back at the house. Strictly speaking it was better than the alternative, but oh well.

"Anything to declare?" The clerk asked. He sat behind a wall of brick and glass, clicking away at a typewriter.

Kris slid his tickets and a secondary ledger onto the clerk's desk and gestured at his bag. "Expedition. Lots of components, but they should all be signed off here."

"Mmm... mkay." He begun stamping the tickets one by one. "To the mountains? With them?"

"They're more capable than they look."

"If you say so." The clerk handed the tickets back. "You're good to go. Have a nice trip."

Pocketing the tickets and shouldering his bag, Kris led the kids through the door to the Magniporters. There were three in this building: massive circles with a complicated series of lattices painted over top, and several incredibly healthy-looking potted plants placed at each vertice or between sets of lines. He'd put quite a bit of idle research into these: large-scale Vegeteporters capable of warping entire groups of people at once. It'd be those fir tree saplings in each of the three corners that made the difference between a regular porter and one of this size, though an entire array of other bushes and ferns couldn't be ignored in that regard.

But now wasn't any time to stop and admire the handiwork here. Kris stepped into the center of the nearest circle, gesturing for the others to follow. There was space for maybe a whole wagon here, so there was plenty room for each of them to fit.

Cufre stepped in cautiously. Tacien followed, looking far less concerned.

Gone, struggling not to fall to his hands and feet, walked like a normal child into the... the thing.

Cufre looked at both of the children, still obviously worried about the whole thing.

"Is everyone ready?" A man in a sharp blue uniform watched them, looking absolutely exhausted. Lots of travelers this time of the month, after all.

Kris stuck two fingers up: a local sign meaning 'alright' or 'okay.' It was featured in various forms across universes, he'd found - thumbs, pinkies, middles. Always a good thing to learn, and a very important thing not to mess up.

"Alright then. Have a nice trip."

Barely a blink could pass between the officer tapping the chalk lines to activate the lattice and the group of them snapping into existence on the other side. They stood in an exactly identical circle, but now amidst a much smaller, less kempt sort of building. It looked almost like a shack, really: bamboo plank walls, triangular ceiling, a few grass and fern circles here and there to pump heat in. Another man in a similar uniform stood behind a wall, half-asleep against a desk - he snapped awake at their arrival, yelping quietly.

Kris stepped out of the circle. "Alright. Looks like we're here."
