[Theory]Hoid's true Motive?

I have assembled here a WOBs, and I will also assemble them piece by piece, with the longest stretches ever, into a Hoid theory.

:So, the first one:.

Quote

At the end of Stormlight 4, we see Dalinar create a vision where Kaladin is able to talk with a version of Tien. How interested would Hoid be to know about this?

Brandon Sanderson

This would be a 9/10 on the Hoid interest meter.

This, I believe, tells us that Hoid is looking very much to see someone again. I will get back to this one.

I have a quote from tWoK, chapter 57.

Quote

I've many [names]. I began life as a thought, a concept, words on a page. That was another thing I stole. Myself.

I see this as him basically saying that he was originally created as a thought. "Words on a page". Forgery, anyone? Well, where could MAGIC such as forgery come from before the Shattering of Adonalsium? That's right, Adonalsium. Hoid was created by Adonalsium.

I don't remember when, but sometime in tWoK or WoR Hoid tells Kaladin that he stole his name from someone he should have loved, his old master. I don't want to stretch this argument too long, but maybe his master was Adonalsium? Just consider it for me, would ya?

Another WOB:

Quote

A Budgie (paraphrased)

So, Hoid can't physically hurt someone, but does this ban extend to mental harm and harm through inaction?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

No. Hoid can mentally hurt someone, or allow them to be hurt, but when considering physical trauma he gets nauseous, to the point he can be incapacitated

He can't hurt someone. OK. But he becomes nauseous just by thinking of physical pain. Might it be so that he regrets hurting someone? Someone he should have loved? I promise, the next part will be the last.

THE FINAL WOB:

Quote

Questioner

Are we ever going to see the Moon Scepter on screen and what it does?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, you should see the Moon Scepter on screen. What it does is it works as a kind of Rosetta Stone for interpreting some of the magics.

Questioner

So that's why Hoid wanted it?

Brandon Sanderson

That's why Hoid wanted it, yes. He's trying to figure out how to give himself-- To be able to use the magics on Sel, and that's a key that he wanted.

So we know that Hoid is collecting lots of magic systems. Magic systems are Investiture right? And where does Investiture originally come from? The shards. The shards are all parts of Adonalsium. So, if he collects all the magics, and maybe even learns to combine them he may be able to get a piece of Adonalsium.

THE FINAL STRETCH:

I believe that Hoid wants to see someone he's lost. He also was created by Adonalsium, so Adonalsium is kind of his "parent". If he made a mistake and killed his Parent, then he obviously regrets it. He does not want to hurt someone, as he's already made that mistake once before. He also wants to remake Adonalsium. Well, that's it- He wants to remake Adonalsium. That's why he for example, in the Epiloge of RoW Wit/Hoid is having a fight with Odium/Rayse. Odium is destroying/Killing Shards, something which makes it harder for Hoid to collect everything. Please feel free to tell me your thoughts.

Just a little something Hoid says from TotES to add to your theorizing

Spoiler

I’ve heard those words. I’ve said those words. The words that proclaim, in bald-faced arrogance, “I don’t trust you to make your own decisions.” The words we pretend will soften the blow, yet instead layer condescension on top of already existent pain. Like dirt on a corpse.

Oh yes. I’ve said those words. I said them with sixteen other people, in fact.

Just want to point out this WoB. Hoid felt that the Shattering was necessary.

I believe that he may rather have thought it, but has since changed his mind. I found a WOB that says that Hoid wasn't active in the Shattering.

Quote

Questioner

And Hoid was a visitor at it [the Shattering] but he wasn’t partaking in on it.

Brandon Sanderson

That is what the implication is. For sure.

He may have been simply worried for his life, and thus have allowed the SHattering to commence. However, once again, this theory is already stretched into a spaghetti noodle.

He may

Well, he can't kill anyone, so that doesn't mean much.

Spoiler

Brandon Sanderson

Hoid was a Dawnshard at some point in the deep past, and the reason he (even still) cannot physically harm people, or even eat meat, is related to the changes this made to his spirit. (Consider this the same fundamental principle as savanthood.) The few of you who have read Dragonsteel know that him being a Dawnshard was also the source of his immortality in that book, though the terms were different back then. (The word Dawnshard was never mentioned, for example--though the primary story of Dragonsteel (which is no longer canon) was about several people who unwittingly become Dawnshards.)

And a preemptive RAFO to all questions on this point. :)

The reason Hoid can't hurt people is the after effects of Holding a Dawnshard.

Sure. However, why would he feel nauseous because of it? Sure, it may have something to do with the thingies of a Dawnshard, but I rather believe it to be connected to his past; I  feel like that would make a better character-development-story. However, thanks for acknowledging potential weaknesses with my theory.

This is part of Dawnshard's after effect that prevents him from causing harm. Eating meat makes Hoid nauseous as well. That's the nature of Dawnshard. The sheer thought of harming someone makes him "suffer".
