time skip, if that's alright with you

The next morning, things continued as they had the past several days. Soldiers packed up, and got the horses ready for another long day of travel.

Whist felt much more comfortable with the sun up, at least, she felt less exposed. The energy she leached from the sun was welcome this morning, as she hadn't slept much that night. From what she had been able to gather, Muriel hadn't slept at all, and had watched them the whole time. Whist was more than a little creeped out.

"Okay," Whist whispered to Fiadh, "Our first step is to bribe the soldiers right? How should we go about doing that?" She glanced around at the group of around 30 men, as they stretched and grumbled. The grumbles were much louder than yesterday, but a sharp glare from Muriel silenced most of them.

Grace hadn't left her carriage at all last night, it seemed. The pink behemoth was probably big enough that she probably slept in it.

Fiadh gave Whist a sheepish look and pulled some jewelry out of her hidden pockets in her dress. She quickly shoved it all back in. "I stole these before I met you. I used them to get food. But food was expensive for me so it took a lot. These all have at least one real jewel in them. And if it's not enough then you still have a little bit of money like we used at the inn? We could throw in some of that if we have too."

Whist dug in her bag and pulled out her wallet. She pulled out a large wad of cash.

"Larsik gave me this to help with the quest."

She walks over to the soldier who looks like he's in charge, under Muriel of course.

"Can I help you?" he asks in a gruff voice. He seems happy to take a break from slacking off to talk.

Yeah Miyako conceded. Hey, did her majesty say she needed us for anything else besides the princess's training, or do we have free run of her castle? How much you suspect we're being watched?

I... think the princess is keeping track of your location. To make sure you don't leave the castle.

Yerik glanced at Miyako. Would we get in trouble for exploring?

I... no, I don't think so.

Let's go do that then! Miyako said. We can say we're stretching our legs or whatever. You two finished with your pasta yet? Miyako asked, dropping her empty bowl on the counter behind her.

"Tides, that was good pasta. Wanna go hit the halls and go walking 'round?" Miyako repeated, for the benefit of anyone listening in.

Ok, cool. Hey, archivist, would the illusion being superimposed over Antin trigger his magic and negate it?

Johnston stumbled back at Antin disappearing, and growled. He looked past Havri and pointed at Quest.

"Hey, glowly mate," Johnston said to Havri, "I'll give you a bargin, eh? If you let me have the goat-headed punk, I won't rob you blind. It's special deal mate, so I'd consider it extra careful like." He chuckled darkly.

Quest ran a hand over the goat horns poking through his mess of curly hair. "Hey, that's rude! These are, um, part of my cultural heritage!" Quest called back. He tried to give a smile to Havri. "Please help."

He conjures a sword from sunlight, and covers himself in golden plate, readying for battle.

The soldier grins. Surprisingly, he has all of his teeth.

"And how much pocket change are we talking lass?"

The heads of several other lesser soldiers turned to watch. Muriel is discussing something with Lady Grace by her carriage, distracted enough.

"Hmmm," the guard scratched his chin as he considered it. A few nearby soldiers who had seen a flash of the jewels gathered around. Whist glanced back at Muriel, hoping she wouldn't turn around and notice.

"Are you tryn' tah bribe just Harmen," one soldier on the shorter side whispered, "Or is this a deal for 'is companions as well?" This one was, in fact, missing teeth.

Technically we're traveling to Caerlon, does Fiadh have somewhere else she wants to go?

"An' you're thinking we . . . uh . . . leave our lady companions behind?" the short one asked. A most of the soldiers had gathered around by now, but none of them called for Muriel to stop things. It appeared the jewels were worth far more than whatever Grace was paying them. And it wasn't much of a surprise that they were less than loyal.

Harmen sat down on a barrel, "We'd have to sneak away, that Muriel one scares me."

She's bluffing to try and add an emotional sort of impact as a back up make them take it out of pity if necessary.

"What you do afterwards is none of our business. It would be nice though if you helped us get away. At the very least I need all the information you have about the Muriel lady. And Grace too."

The short one went silent and glanced at Herman, who was clearly the leader.

"Let's make out deal first, then I'll share what information I have."

He held his large weathered hand up, so she could shake it. "We get the riches, and you get help finding a way out of this, sound good?"

Fiadh nodded. "Sounds great." She shook his hand.

He nodded, very business-like. "I'm Harmon, that's Jert," He gestured to the shorter soldier, who was probably a second in command. "The rest can introduce themselves later."

Muriel and Graces discussion was getting more animated, at least on Graces end. She seemed frustrated, and spoke loudly, but was still far enough away you can't make out any of it. Muriel just stood there, . . . being Muriel.

Harmen took the opportunity of a thorough distraction and jumped right into telling all he knew about the pair.

"They hired us at the port," he began, "And we thought we had had a stroke of luck, a nice rich lady looking for an escort would be good for business y'know? She could pay us really well."

"But she didn't!" Jert interjected, "She ain't paid us nothing yet."

Herman ignored him. "Lady Grace promised to pay us when we finished the job and got her home, which seemed fine at first . . . but as we journeyed her temperament proved to be . . . less than agreeable."

"She's a witch!"

"I wouldn't say that, Jert, but we've dealt with bad customers before and come out on the short end of the deal. I wanted to be certain we weren't getting swindled so I confronted her about it, plus it was a bit suspicious that she refused to make a down payment."

"A witch and a swindler."

"Jert please. Anyway, I got her to tell me how much she specifically planned on paying us and it . . . wasn't as much as she implied before. I convinced the boys to see this through so we could get at least something, out of this mess, but you're offering quite a bit more. I had never heard of her, or Muriel before I took the job, otherwise I might have been more cautious."

"I had," Jert insisted, "but I knew 'er by a different name which is why we got ourselves swindled. The Witch of Caerlon, they call 'er, a terrible menace who leeches money magic from any who cross her path. An' that Muriel one is her minion, I'm sure of it, I'll bet she's actually a goblin in disguise."

"That is . . . certainly a theory, but I don't think we should be jumping to conclusions." Herman gave Jert a hard look. "Anyway, that's all the information we've got lass."

Yeah, I also really want to keep this going. I hope Calano wants to keep playing, because I also really want to keep up the Miyako and Hyron relationship.

I guess if he really doesn't want to play, we could get another person to join?
