Question

okay so i just finished dawnshard. and rysn has it now.  it appears like awakening.  it ended up being left on roshar.

and now for the questions....

Did Vasher used to have it ?   did he invest it in the painting?

does that mean his friends who are mentioned in warbreaker are the others ?

Although holding a Dawnshard appears to have similar effects as holding a large quantity of breaths, the Dawnshards predate the existence of Awakening, and as far as we know, neither Vasher nor any of the other Five Scholars has ever held a Dawnshard.

The only people I personally know of to have held it that are still alive are Hoid and Rysn. My personal theory is that the Dawnshard was the weapon used to kill Adonalsium. (It's possible I'm missing information about the Dawnshard that invalidate one or both things I said.)

In the Dawnshard novella it is explicitly stated by Nikli that the Dawnshard were used to kill Adonalsium.

I was missing information. Dang. Thanks for the correction.

Was the first part right though?

Yes - the only confirmed characters to hold/ have held a dawnshard are Rysn and Hoid.

There is a WoB that there is another dawnshard holder we saw on screen somewhere but it is unknown who it is.

In SP4 we learn that Sigzil held a dawnshard sometime after SA4, presumably it will happen in SA5.

Not precisely correct. Your statement implies the Dawnshards were weapons; like a knife wielded to kill the deity. The quote is (Ch 19):

Spoiler

And so, the Dawnshards. The four primal Commands that created all things.” He paused. “And then eventually, they were used to undo Adonalsium itself. . . .”

Cord whispered something in her own language.

“So you do know,” Nikli said to her.

So, the Commands were a part of the creation of reality, and were somehow used in the Shattering. Was Adonalsium killed? Possible, but not definite that it was even a being that could be killed. For all we know Adonalsium is like Gaea or the World Tree - a personification of reality but not *actually* a discreet being. We just don't have enough information.

We only know that holding the Dawnshard seems to give Rysn effects at least similar to the Third Heightening. She does not seem to have breaths, nor can she Awaken.

Yeah, it's driving my friend crazy that the Dawnshard gives basically the Third Heightening but all of us people that have read all of the cosmere (besides a few thing ie. secret projects, maybe a few novellas etc. etc.) won't tell him anything besides, "It's not Breaths," and "RAFO." I wonder if that is how Brandon feels.

It's just what happens when someone holds a lot of Investiture. Weird stuff happens even if they don't have any Invested Arts of their own.

Adonalsium was killed, and according to Frost, Rayse "bears the weight of God's own divine hatred, separated from the virtues that gave it context". If Adonalsium had hatred as well as virtues (presumably mercy, valor, etc), and other qualities like ambition, then this strongly implies that it was an individual being in some sense.

Thanks for the reference, and true. I guess I wasn't clear - I meant that since we know large amounts of Investiture, left alone, can develop sapience (or at least sentience) we don't know that there was a Vessel (like Leras, Tanavast, etc) that was killed - or just the mind of Adonalsium that was Shattered.

Good catch

I think the general consensus is that Adonalsium had no Vessel, but that's true, we don't really know. I think I've seen theories arguing that Sixteen was Adonalsium's Vessel or that it was the original Hoid, but in the meantime we really just don't know enough about it. Here's a WoB that RAFO's a similar question.
