Very cool!

Although, I have suggestion to make: shift everything one to right (so the top is Ishar and Jezrien is first to the rigth). That way Ishar and Paliah are at the correct positions in relation to their dots on the Double Eye of Almighty.

If I remember from the Alethi translation thread, that should be the Vorin numerals for 1-10.

Wait, if I remember correctly, isn't Ishar the patron of the Lightweavers?

Nope. Ishar patrones Bondsmiths. Lightweaver's patron is Shalash (easy to remember since Shallan is a Lightweaver).

I like having "1" at the top, but I'll make a copy that's just rotated just a bit when I have a chance. I'll quote you so you see it. Might not be able to get to that this weekend though.

Nope, he's Bondsmiths and Shalash is Lightweavers.

In chapter 63 of Words of Radiance, Taln does call Shallan "one of Ishar's Knights," but he is apparently just referring to Ishar's role in founding the Knights Radiant.

Yes, that's what I was thinking of.

Really a wonderful work. But I agree with Oversleep in the first post to shift the whole to have a Ishar on the top (and a Clock-like numeration)

Alright, I put together some rotated versions. I made another change while I was at it however... I decided that the "divine attributes" were perhaps more interesting than the numbers, so I made a swap there. I did hang on to the Vorin numerals, dropping them beneath the faces. If someone wants a rotated version of the originals (numbers rather than attributes) just let me know.

Pretty cool, I wouldn't mind them turning into PC (shush, Mac people, your machines are PCs too) wallpapers. A couple of points of feedback on the latest versions though:

  • The divine attributes could maybe fit right below the Orders' names (I imagine them on a single line, delimited by... something. A diamond, a star, a vertical line, etc.). It makes more sense to me this way, I imagine the proximity will allow for the attributes to more intuitively describe the orders.
  • I like the numbers, but some of them are a little difficult to see at the moment because of the shadow on the inside of their circle.
  • I would've liked to see the essences somewhere too. If the attributes move up, perhaps the essences could take their place.
  • While I am a huge fan of minimalistic and/or clean design, I can't help but feel that if all of my suggestions are accepted, too much of the more important order information (Surges, Essences, attributes) will be just plain text. I think at least one of those entries should have a little bit of decoration to distinguish it.

Minor niggle: the kerning around the I's in that font is poor, so they're too widely spaced and almost hard to read.  It took me a moment to understand that the top one was "Bondsmiths", for instead, because it looked more like "Bonds m ith".  It'd probably require some manual repositioning, but it'd look a lot better if that could be fixed.

Otherwise, love them!  I think I might make one my iPhone's background, and @Argent, I'd happily turn them into wallpapers if @jofwu was okay with it (though he/she could do it better with the original files, probably).

Little update...

You're all welcome to do whatever you like with them, including wallpapers/backgrounds. No need to give me credit.

I'm trying out a version with the Surge symbols placed beneath the word. They have to be larger than I'd like so that they're adequately distinguishable, so I'm nervous it might be a little busy. But I figure it's worth trying out.

@Argent:

I like these ideas. I wanted to put the attributes on one line down below, but you can see there isn't much room. Feels like they make a bit more sense near the heralds, but I think this change might be worth it for the space savings. I wanted to stick the Gemstones and/or Essences in somewhere, so this would make that doable. You think Essences would be better than the gems? I suppose the gems are hinted at by the color already.

I'll also work on a way to make the numbers more legible. Don't have an easy way remove the shadow unfortunately, since I just grabbed that bottom portion from the book headers and my skills are limited. :) So I'm gonna see how it looks with the numbers sitting on top of a circle or something.

@Jondesu:

The kerning bothered me too! I just liked the font too much to pass it up. I'll see what I can do about that. Probably not as tedious as some of the other changes I want to make.

Honestly, I just forgot about the gemstones. Would be nice to fit those somewhere as well...

Are you sure there isn't enough room for the attributes between the name of each orders and its glyph? I am eyeballing it, but it looks like plenty (with the current typeface and size).

Sorry, wording must not have been clear. There should be, and I'll try it out.

@Argent@Jondesu How about these?

heralds black 3.pngheralds white 3.png

Notable changes:

  • tried to fix the worst "I" kerns
  • moved attributes up and split by a hyphen (fancier symbols seemed distracting to me)
  • added divider line on black background to separate attributes from order names
  • gemstone and essence just above the names on either side of the wedge
  • surge symbols beneath the surge
  • cleared out the shadow directly under the numerals

Hmm.

The divine attributes look good. I envisioned them separated by a vertical line, but I think that would look weird on a curved line.

The Surge glyphs feel distracting to me. I would love to see them somewhere (maybe even the same place, just shrunk significantly), but they don't work for me the way they are right now.

The essences and gems fill the space really nicely, but the way they are positioned implies they belong to the same category, which is not the case. I don't have a solution to this, unfortunately.

The dark version also seems difficult to read; the grey most of the text uses blends with the black, I think.

All this being said, I should mention that I am being nitpicky. This is your art, and I want to make it very clear that I am trying to offer feedback I believe will make it better (at least in my eyes); I am not criticizing. Even if I suck at at conveying all that implicitly.

Nah, I appreciate the feedback. I'm an engineer- not an artist. :) I might try to whip something else with a few of these adjustments... But I think I want to make it fresh from an earlier version. I feel like some of the quality has been lost from shifting and rotating things a lot as I've tried things out.

I think I'll try out the gems/essences centered.

Opinions on this batch? I started from scratch to fix the quality and get some things lined up that were slightly out of whack. Order names now have some color and gem/essences are centered. I shrunk the surge symbols a bit more- definitely too small to make out some of their smaller details now, but I think maybe it's worth it to keep the clutter down.

Got a few black ones where the small/white text is dimmed to varying degrees. Can't decide which one does a better job of being legible without cluttering too much. Maybe something in between?

Overall I think it looks better. Out of the three black ones, I like the first one the most - the new light color improves readability greatly. I believe the only differences between the three are the white / light grey distributions, yes? If so, I would like to see a version with the Surges' symbols in the old, darker grey, and everything else in the new, lighter one. I don't think I would like it more than the first version here, but I might.

As for the last version, my only feedback is my previous comment about the essences and gems being on the same tier. In other words, when you see something like "protecting - leading" on top, it is suggested to you that "protecting" and "leading" belong to the same category, i.e. divine attributes. So when you see the same format on the bottom, e.g. "sapphire - zephyr" you get the same idea - that sapphire and zephyr belong to the same category, but that is not the case. As before, I don't have solutions, just problems :) Outside of that, I am very much okay with this version.

On a different note, as I was looking at this latest batch, an idea for a different layout came to me - see if you like, maybe you want to give it a shot. I am thinking that the most important elements in the entire image are the Herads' heads and the Orders' symbols. So what if we pulled those out of their relatively crowded area (which they currently share with their surges, essences, and gems), and gave them more room on the outside, past their names? This would result in three primary concentric circles - one for the Orders' glyphs, one for all the... things... associated with an Order, and one for the Heralds' faces. Not necessarily in this order. I can't imagine it very well, but I am bad at visualizing things, so no surprise there.

Just a thought.

Oh my heck it's all boys on the top and girls on the bottom how did I never notice. With Stormfather creating a Bondsmith and being the spren of Honor, I'm convinced it's a scale from Honor to Cultivation now. Sorry if I'm slow here. Just... makin' connections.
