Are We Being Too Biased towards Odium?
Caidhe replied to teknopathetic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So only a shard or splinter can fully understand realmatics? Well Brandon does. I think he gave himself away. You heard it here folks. Brandon Sanderson is a holder of a shard. I'm guessing the intent is anticipation since it is one emotion we all share while waiting for his books. -
Has it been said outright that Odium NEVER wants to pick up another shard? Maybe he just doesn't want one that is incompatible but some may be. I can definitely see that some (honor or devotion) wouldn't be something to interest him, but perhaps there are others remaining that we are unaware of that aren't incompatible. Though if that were the case I would imagine dominion would have been one that he would have taken (hatred + dominion = tyranny? oppression? either way seems like somewhat of a complement instead of an opposing force).

That being said, some reviews are definitely worthy of downrating. When someone gives a bad review (as one reviewer did) because they don't like that the main character is female is definitely a good reason to mark a review as unhelpful. Edit: That reviewer was trolling.... Forget that.
-
You can't please everyone. As long as they aren't professional reviewers, no one is required to read the full book to form an opinion. As much as we are all (most?) fans of this book and Sanderson, I don't think we should expect everyone to love them. There are a TON of positive reviews though, the average is 5 stars. That is saying something.

Words of Radiance Debuts at #1 on NY Best Sellers List
Caidhe replied to DragonReborn's topic in Stormlight Archive
Great news! First time for this for Brandon I think (for a non-WoT book). Hopefully it means more will see it and decide to pick up his books. -
Its just a guess, but I think whichever order followed Talenel'Elin would be the 1 of 10 that did not join the recreance (since Taln was the one of 10 heralds that did not abandon the oathpact). The wikis appear to say it would be the Stonewards, an order we know little or nothing about seeing that none of the viewpoint characters or interludes appear to have had one.

I really like Xavien's explanation. The fact that he didn't PERSIST in his questions after he started to have doubts is really a huge failing.
-
To my knowledge we don't know when Honor/Tanavast died. I expect that he died before the Prelude to the series, which would definitely be before Mistborn.
-
It may simply be that his father is still alive and his grandfather is dead.

Kaladin will have to protect Roshone though, in keeping with the third oath of the Windrunners. After the situation with the King and Moash, I expect he'll do it, but hope he'll turn Roshone over for some sort of prosecution for his past actions.

We are led to believe that Odium is bound to Roshar (or Roshar's system) and is unable to move on. My instincts tell me that the sphere is either what has bound Odium from leaving, or has enough of his power bound into it that he is unwilling to leave without it. I think there has to be a link between Odium and this sphere - due to the link between the Listener's gods (surely Odium and his spren) and that Gavilar had a way to bring them back. I don't have much in the way of evidence for it, but it appears to make sense to me. Either way, I'm certain it will become the proverbial MacGuffin in the next book (or a future one).

I voted unknown since I can't decide. I do think it is an interesting story line though. I don't think she will be the type (maybe before, but not now) to choose based on who will help her family. How I would want it to end would be her ending up with Adolin but being good friends with Kaladin. I think he would make more of a friendship match than a romantic interest for her. Or... Shallan for Adolin and Veil for Kaladin!

These are fantastic - thanks!

What the... really? Wow.. I really need to catch up on these forums. I just finished the book earlier today and that one at least, I would never have thought of....

Yeah - no doubt about that. Black blade that wants to kill evil? Yep. Wonder if Stormlight can be substituted for Breath if Szeth wields it. I'm guessing yes.

I ordered via Amazon (Prime, 2 day) once I found out that the nearest signing was 3-4 hours drive (and 2-3 weeks from release) away. They haven't shipped it yet, but still have Tuesday, March 4th by 8PM as the delivery estimate. I've had a lot of stuff from Amazon shipped late one night and delivered the next afternoon so I'm not worried yet, but the longer before it actually ships out the more concerned I'll be that I won't have it tomorrow.

I think Lopen stating that he is glowing and can fly, makes (to me) it appear clear that Lopen is the one who is using Stormlight here and flying, not just being tossed around by Kaladin's lashings.

There may be different rules for who can be challenged. Perhaps at his rank, he can only really duel another highprince without losing honor. Among them, he may be either below their level of skill or at least not so far above them that he feels confident. Alternatively perhaps he feels that the politics of it (alienating the one he beats) may not have been worth it.

Yeah - I think he's talking to someone other than himself (Syl most likely based on the tone) but still trying to convince himself.

He may be trying to convince himself that he's okay with it, or at least convince himself that it shouldn't change his opinion of Dalinar.

This one seems more clear cut than most. Kaladin talking to someone and referring to Amaram.

Which version(s) of the book will you purchase?
Caidhe replied to laeelin's topic in Stormlight Archive
These days, I only get hardcovers (and not ebooks/audiobooks) for books of my favorite authors. I will get my copy of WoR signed at some point (next time Sanderson has a NY area appearance). I'll get the audiobook eventually when I have a free audible credit and a long trip (or a lot of yard/house work to do) since I love the Kramer/Redding readings.
