Shallan and slaves - analysis of a single scene
Aleksiel replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Bah! I'll save the life of a slaver and he'll give his slaves in payment. Dues in recompense for my soldiers protecting him and his worthless life. -
Shallan and slaves - analysis of a single scene
Aleksiel replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
That's a good point. So bloodmark=garnet one and firemark=ruby. I might have to write it down somewhere, I'm still struggling to make sense of the sphere values, salaries and goods prices. -
Shallan and slaves - analysis of a single scene
Aleksiel replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Hmm, where does it say a bloodmark is a garnet one? All I found is the following: I'm not sure which price they're talking at the end. I understand it as the sap oil being five diamond marks to a garnet and the sap oil was said to be cheaper than the oil, which is two bloodmarks. Two garnet marks make a ruby mark according to the table, so why not say it like that? Therefor, I think a bloodmark is the ruby mark. -
Shallan and slaves - analysis of a single scene

Thanks, I wasn't sure if rubymark=firemark. It was my best guess, but I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, even in the coppermind article. Kaladin describes firemarks as glowing with red light, so it's either ruby or garnet. May be actually garnet since ruby mark doesn't sound as pittance, but relatively average since it's in the middle of the table? -
Shallan and slaves - analysis of a single scene
Aleksiel replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Even less according to Shallan's calculations: So, six firemarks is a very generous payment for slaves, but pittance for non-slave servants. I wasn't able to find much on coppermind on firemarks, can someone tell me how many diamond chips is one firemark? Is firemark the same as rubymark? I'm honestly confused. -
It's an interesting theory with some issues. The only one with an Honorblade (that we know of) is Szeth. Part of what gave Syl a clue to what he was, is the amount of stormlight he consumed, so Heralds (as Szeth thought in WoK) have always been inefficient users of investiture.

I haven't seen a single WoB about Tarah. She's darkeyed according to coppermind, though I don't know why, no reference provided. edit: Not that I do not agree Tarah is most likely darkeyes, just saying it's not canon yet.

Elhokar and the spren he sees aren't in the prologue. But the spren Jasnah saw acted a lot like those Elhokar sees, despite the fact that they look more like Cryptics. Jasnah's spren moves around like a shadow, just like the ones Elhokar's described. That was my point, hope it's clearer now

She doesn't say actually So, I suppose it's open for discussion. Funny things is, until recently I was convinced a female ardent was the dear one who gave Jasnah the book, and now it turns out it was actually an unknown man.
-
I don't think so. He said to be the one who failed her, not the other way around.
-
Kal claims to be uninterested in lighteyed women and said he knew nothing of 'their species', so I highly doubt Tarah is one, else Kal would have had a reason to think lighteyes girls have redeeming qualities unlike lighteyes men.

I agree there's likely a corrective. I'd say their loyalty and devotion to the Radiant and his/her beliefs is the mechanism for it. If they break the spirit of the bond, the squire bond breaks as well.
-
Hm, getting the passives, but not the surges. I like that, have an up-vote!
-
It's a bit of stretch to say one darkeyed officer meant the darkeyes were the ruling class.
-
If we accept squires get only the direct enchanced physical abilities from stormlight (strength, speed, agility, healing, etc), that will mean all squires are the same regardless of the Order of their Radiant. I somehow expect there to be differences not only in their personalities, but also in their abilities.

Nohadon could have had lighteyes without being a surgebinder, he certainly never indicated being one when he spoke with Dalinar or in his Way of Kings. There weren't KR in the time of Nahadon. He never mentioned Radiants (even is the passage on Urithiru), spoke how surgebinders should be better people; Teft said the Ideals of the Radiants are based on a book written by an old king whose name he didn't remember. But Nohadon certainly wrote about 'journey before destination' Why do you say darkeyes ruled in the Feverstone vision? And this lighteyes being beneath darkeyes? His book was said to be scandalous because it implied lighteyes should do the serving, but it was more in the manner of doing what's best for the people the way I read it, not that a king should carry around refreshments.

Even Dalinar, who has read WoK numerious times, had problems recaling Urithiru. From one of his visions: My beast guess it it Urithiru was mentioned only once in the whole book and only Jasnah, being specifically interested in the city, took notice. Urithiru is mentioned infront of Shallan very early in the book with Kabsal: And later on Shallan goes through Jasnah's notes and reads more about Urithiru The whole passage your question is based on is the folowing (chronologically after the previous quotes I gave) Nohadon's WoK pre-dates the KR, so it was never described in the manner we know it. The knowledge of what Urithiru became later on was lost to most people. edit: tl;dr version - the 'it' Shallan claims not to know is the knowledge of Urithiru being the capital of the Radiants, not the name of the city.

Ten years ago; Gavilar's assassination was 6 years ago. About the popular theory of Jasnah being raped: what's foreshadowed so far is an ardent who was 'very dear' to her and unexplained hatred for thugs robbing people in dark alleys. Losing a loved one that way (being robbed and killed) is another explanation of Jasnah's emotional detachment and it's understandable she haven't told anyone about a secret forbidden love affair/interest. One other significant thing is Jasnah was apparently obsessed with keeping her family save by hiring assassins to watch over them secretly, which I think also ties up with the idea I just mentioned. She met both Amaram and Sadeas in her PoV and the worst she thought was how 'it would never happen' between Amaram and her. I am no expert, but I can imagine that'd be all she thought of if he had really molested her.

Wouldn't it make more sense to Lash whatever's burning? Because lashing the fire itself seems just like an odd and unpractical way to put out fire .
-
WoB hint the black sphere is what destroyed the Radiants? I haven't seen this. Does Vargo even know Szeth has it?
-
Well, now that's something I haven't seen before... I don't know. I also think there might have been something between her and an ardent, but I lean towards him being killed by some thugs like those she soulcasted with Shallan.
-
Yeah, it's one possibility, but that would undermine her heresy and her whole character for me. It's kind of a cliche to make her a heretic because of a ardent. Jasnah didn't seem hateful towards them as a whole, though certainly not on the best terms either... Plus she has been fond of an ardent once, he gave her The book of endless pages.

Gotta love typos that make sense

Thank you both! But we see a lot of Adolin's PoV, he doesn't give any particular reason for his distrust, nor is there any indication he's in denial like Shallan. He's very straight forward and hot-headed. I'm not convinced there's more to it.

I imagine it depends whether Kaladin would infuse the barrel or the water. I don't see why he can't be able to infuse and Lash anything that isn't already infested. The density of the object seems irrelevant to me, might change the amount of stormlight needed, but not the result.
