  1. Yeah, I just saw it and edited my post. Just seems weird to have the same mistake twice. edit: may be the second quote wasn't a mistake, it says violet garnets are less valuable gems.
  2. It could be bloodmark, I tend to confuse them, but that's not the point. I don't remember reading anything about the color of the gem changing its ability to hold stormlight, so a blue garnet is as good as a red one so long as they are cut properly. edit: But I checked and that last part is wrong (don't judge, there are too many WoB to keep track of them all). Still, different color garnets might be used in spheres, just won't hold stormlight as long as red garnets. But now I'm not so sure it wasn't a mistake.
  3. At this rate Brandon will probably finish The Stormlight Archive before Martin completes ASoIaF...
  4. Ah, thanks for pointing this out, I've forgotten it. It's heavy when infused and it locks down when spheres go dun, making it impossible to move, so it actually feels heavier for the user, but it could be because it no longer grants extra strength and endurance. I want to sort it out, I'm trying to come up with a solid theory on Plate and this is one of the issues I have.
  5. Is it really a Voidbringers chart? I think it's of the Old Magic for two reasons: first Pattern said Voidbringers have no pattern and these glyphs are symmetric; second the woman on the chart could be Cultivation/Nightwatcher and Odium is a guy, so no reason to have a female with a safehand on a Odium related chart.
  6. Kaladin ran out of stormlight in the dueling arena because the helm fen on his spheres, but Kal wasn't able to breath in the stromlight from the helm. What I find most interesting about this is that Plate is extremely heavy (much heavier than a regular armor) and stormlight make it much lighter, but someone in Plate needs an extra strong chair to sit down on. So it's lighter only for the user. I find this very odd. I think it's safe to rule out spren-made Plate, because Blades don't become heavier when their gems run out of stormlight.
  7. The Lighweavers' garnet is red, but generally speaking garnets can be many other colors: purple, green, blue, yellow, pink, etc. I think at one point a garnetmark was called firemark, so it's kind of odd to have a non-red(orange) garnet. But I'd it's not a mistake, just that different colors garnets are used in spheres with red being the prevalent, thus the alias.
  8. To expand a bit more my idea: It could be a way to tell more about your characters as well. A gentler, more sensitive magic user will easily work with wood, whereas stone will be very problematic. A blunt magic user will be exceptional with metal, but unable to manipulate wood. However, this has the unpleasant potential of creating tons of problems you originally didn't plan on. Perhaps you could cut the poetic wood part if it doesn't work for your story, but overall using different phrases for each material is a nice and neat approach. If you prefer to have commands that work on all materials, consider doing it Harry Potter style, however I do not recommend basing spells on Latin, because it would be odd. An universal phrase/word could also be problematic: your magic user is behind metal bars in a stone cell with a wooden bed. S/he gives a command - how do you decide which material obeys? By touching it, looking at it, intention? All could work in some cases and all could fail your character in others. Perhaps outline your story and see which method helps your character to succeed when you want them to and prevents them from achieving something when you want them to fail. Also consider what is the price for your magic. If different words are used for each material, persuading the said material to obey can be enough. If it's a universal chant, you should add more than a sore throat as a consequence, else your magic user could be too OP to have trouble achieving their goals via magic and things will just be too easy for them.
  9. While healing after being strung during the highstorm, Kaladin described experiencing: Most likely the times when he inhaled stormlight from the spheres Teft provided. However, I'm not sure how and why it would feel cold to him. Sure, stormlight doesn't provide heat, but it's either the only time such an affect is described or I notice it just now. (I'm rereading WoK in case you're wondering)
  10. Nice! I didn't read all the comments, so sorry if it has been mentioned: on one of the first times that Kaladin inhaled stormlight as a bridgeman, he felt 'a sudden sense of euphoria', which possibly ties with it being more potent than oxygen (iirc more oxygen can make someone feel euphoric) and is probably part of what makes it addictive.
  11. I think it could work really well with English words as commands, If you want a more mystical feeling consider having a different set of English words for each material. Wood may require something more poetic, metal - something short and straight to the point, stone - harsher/dialect words and so on.
  12. Dalinar might end up being Honor's champion or Nohadon 2. Brandon has spoken a lot in his classes how a writer should be bale to kill his darlings, so Dalinar might be a goner. With Renarin having a book in the second five, it's possible both Dalinar na dAdolin to be dead at that point, so that would be one of the things that pushes Renarin to have a more central figure (in he manages to be a KR in the shadows until then). It's not an outcome I'd like, just something that came to my mind and I thought I'd share it.
  13. If you think of spren as pieces of the surges, it makes sense for frost to appear when summoning a Blade like when surgebinding - in a way you are using a surge both times.
  14. It wasn't only Kal. When Dalinar said he wanted to refound the KR, here's the reaction: But I suppose the Shards giving their holders light eyes is part of what forced the dogma, though there must be more. The Heralds are thought to have lighteyes, so there's that. Though there are countries that worship Jazereze as a God, not the Almighty, but only Vorin countries have lighteyes/darkeyes system.
  15. The Alethi society is as unfair as any class segregated society. It's not only the eye color, but also some professions are more favorable than others and praised. Kaladin's fault (the way I see it) is that he doesn't see beyond the eyecolor. Meaning he thinks, for one, that darkeyes are better (may be because he hasn't seen any of them in position of power they could abuse, so he falsely concludes darkeyes wouldn't abuse privileges). Second, he somehow thinks changing the nahn-dahn system will suddenly make people treat each other better and do less harm to each other. If the lighteyes-darkeyes system gets changed, it will be changed to something similar. Another class based society, different segregation method, because Alethi are on Medieval level. But there will always be the same unfairness in the life of the lower class, and those in the upper ones will still exploit their position (depending on the person, of course). There are some things I find curious about the lighteyes-darkeyes dogma. It's based on the memory of the Radiants, but the same Radiants are despised as traitors to humanity. I would think that then the association to the Radiants would make the lighteyes the lower and deposed class. Also, I wonder if darkeyes have something supernatural to them - they are a very dark green/purple/whatever that can only be caught in the right light, which isn't how earth dark eyes are.
  16. How many lighteyes did Kaladin really meet pre-WoR? Two city lords and their children, Amaram. He only had experience with highranked people. In Dalinar's camp, he was bewildered and surprised to see ligtheyes working ordinary jobs, who would actually make the majority of the lighteyes, because only few can rule. Kaladin never met any low dahn lighteyes pre-WoR. His grudge and disdain is based on a very small amount of lighteyes that wronged him greatly. Judging the majority of people by the three or four you've met isn't accurate or fair.
  17. I suspect it's alcoholism rather than gambling. He was looking for his flask while on duty with Sigzil and there was one more hint that made me think his problem is with alcohol, but I can't remember what it was now, sorry. Another hidden thing is the supposed presence of one Order that didn't abandon their oaths, likely the Skybreakers. The Stormwardens are apparently breaking the Alethi rules for no writing for men, so they're probably up to something. Tyn's former pupil was named Sig, which sounds like short for Sigzil. Also, Pai is close to Pailiah (not saying she was the Herald, but it's interesting). Hoid entered Roshar from one of the Horneaters lakes.
  18. Who would win a KR civil war? Probably Odium.
  19. A scene can have more than one purpose and her name was a fairly clear reference to Pailiah, her attitude was somewhat befitting what we know of the Truthwatchers.. It could be nothing, but with Brandon it's usually something.
  20. Possible. Renarin wrote with little or no control over his own actions, may be something of the sort happened to Pai when she wrote all the ways the queen resembled the ten fools.
  21. May be Lightweaver will be one of the squireless Orders or creative ways to cut someone's throat will be close enough
  22. If he just allowed himself to get closer, that'd be fine. But he just did as he wished without caring for the etiquette. It's not the actions themselves I find problematic, it's the way he acted and spoke that made it all too rude and out of place. He could have achieved the same (expressing his opinion, etc) without the attitude.
  23. It's certainly very important. I think the bond allows/encourages squires to express the Radian's primary attribute, but that's speculative. I think all who gained access to stormlight expressed Protecting as an integrated part of them (or adopted trait, if you wish), but I can't say if it's a must, just for now looks right to me. Although I have trouble imagining Vathah suddenly involved in a creative activity if he is to become Shallan's squire.
  24. At the closed meeting with only five people Dalinar had, Kaladin was there as a bodyguard. While Dalinar listened to him. it was not Kaladin's place to interfere with the conversation. Kaladin was not invited to attend it, almost noone was invited regardless of eye color, because it wasn't the social status that earned invitation. And all other occasions he spoke when on bodyguard duty. We don't see the lighteyed captain of the king's guard suddenly giving his superiors piece of his mind. Kaladin was ridiculously touchy from one point until almost the end: 'Oh no, Adolin and Shallan ignore me on their date, how dare they! Insufferable lighteyes!'. Kaladin didn't act the way a bodyguard should on many occasions when he was on bodyguards duty. And he loves throwing being darkeyes as an excuse when someone is displeased with him. Even when on the riding lessen the woman was annoyed he had no clue what distinguished male from female arts and he was like 'You are mean because of my eyes color', blah-blah. Shallan said it very well in the chasm Edit: while I understand what made Kaladin the way he is, nobody (especially not the king) is under any obligations to put up with him.
  25. They chose to protect. Or rather accepted Kaladin's lead to protecting actions. I do not claim they share Kaladin's personality, else they'd be Radiants themselves. I argue they, after some time, began to express Kaladin's primary attribute and that's what makes them squires. edit: And their connection to Kal, of course.
