  1. I agree the WoB about two LW makes sense if he's talking about the Order. However, there's another post-WoR WoB about us not having seen another LW, only the power of LW, which points towards Kal having met a LW Radiant pre-WoK. May be Ym wasn't advanced enough to get the foresight or (unlikely, but still) he wasn't a Truthwatcher. The visions seem related to Ren's surges: Progression brings the gist of how things could progress in the future and Illumination give it sound and picture. Shallan's passive - Memory - is most likely from Illumination; passive abilities in general make sense only if they are results of surges, not random unrelated cool things.
  2. Here. A day on Roshar is 20 hours edit: I'm not completely sure the 20-hour-day is canon, but the Rosharian years being 1.1 Earth years is.
  3. Yeah, I agree. I feel so much more for SA characters. But on the other hand I just don't dare get attached to any of Martin's characters Dalinar and the Stormfather are a compltely different category. The Stormfather had no choice as he himself says. What applies to them isn't to be considered as the usual way things between a proto-Radiant and his spren go. To heal his eyesight Ren likely needed more than a sphere, so it must have been conscious use of stormlight, which points towards Ren being aware of Glys. Kal has had Syl for months before he used stormlight or noticed anything out of the ordinary. Glys having enough of his memories at the end of WoR to tell Ren he's a Truthwatcher also points towards a long forming bond and at least one spoken Ideal. Of course goodness and certain Radiant-like type of behavior isn't canceled by having a Blade, however I think it makes the person less likely to get chosen for a Nahel bond because of his/her already established bond with another Radiant spren.
  4. We could see him on his death bed in Ren's or Jasnah's memories when his/her book comes, but I agree no matter how he dies, the proper way is for it to be on-screen. Not exactly, but it's ok I wouldn't have noticed if I didn't go back to re-read the whole of my post you quoted. It's been months you know, I've forgotten what I wrote. I agree Adolin's grandfather was likely at least 70, however you misunderstood my point - the average life expectancy for all Alethi should be lower. Dalinar could live long (and prosper ) or not. Rosharian year is 1.1 Earth years, so when someone is 3 Rosharian years old, he's 3.3 Earth years and so on.
  5. Why do you say he gets his Blade before Glys? Syl was bonding with Kaladin way before he discovered he could use stormlight, so it's unfounded to assume Ren formed a bond with his spren shortly before healing his sight. Glys probably didn't have the mind to explain to Renarin what was going on and why he shouldn't get the Blade. Ren wasn't keen on bonding it if you recall the scene when Adolin gives him Blade, so the'd likely already felt something wasn't quite right without being able to explain why. The screaming starts, as I believe maxal mentioned, after the one says the first Oath if we're to judge based on Dalinar's experience. Yeah, I agree reviving his Blade makes him more likely to survive. Overall, I don't think we'll see many major character deaths in SA. I'd argue George R R Martin had good reasons to kill most characters. What Ned Stark did was very stupid. Just because the honorable ones live through other authors books doesn't mean it's unfounded for him to be betrayed. Joffrey had it coming, the Red Wedding was the result of Rob's stupidity to get himself in the hands of an envious, greedy, disloyal and easily offended scum. Granted, I read those books long ago, so I can't argue with precise argumentation. However, I do remember finding deaths justified and not simply for shock-value, although they were shocking nonetheless. Of course, you're entitled to your own opinion. Also, no other author kills characters like Martin, so don't worry. Which book is that?
  6. Yeah, why let a character die peacefully when you can have them brutally slaughtered? How he lives his life is much more important and the man deserves to get a break at the end of his life. It's a possibility I mentioned months ago. Not fair, you can't respond twice to the same post My great-grandmother also suffered from delusions and died when I was around 8 years old, yet I remember, so no reason for Adolin to have been at least 10 to remember his grandfather. Since Shallan is betrothed at 17 and that's perfectly acceptable, then having the first child when you're under 20 is to be expected, so the second one is likely to be born before the parents are 25 years old. The average life-expectancy should be lower than you estimate because it includes everyone. ~75 is unrealistic, modern life-expectancy is lower. Adolin's grandfather was privileged, so he lived longer than the average citizen (better healthcare, more food, others do the hard physical work for him and so on). We don't know how many years the first five books will cover. We can guess it won't take longer than 5 in-world years, but it may or may not be correct, so we don't know how old the characters will be in book 6.
  7. So long as Adolin keep his Blade, no living spren will get close to him. That didn't stop the Stormfather, but he probably didn't have a choice or at the very least he's different from the average spren. I also see Dalinar dying, likely at the end of book 5. But you're right on Adolin - if he revives his Blade, he's probably live.If not... well, there will be major character deaths in Desolation, no way around it.
  8. I'm not into this major-minor surge thing you have in mind. I'll go with because he's starting to establish a bond with his Blade that slowly begins to give him ED perks. I don't think he's originally an ED, but his blade is ED spren and by waking it, he gets some ED spirit fix into his soul, which changes his mentality towards ED. Of course, for this to be possible Adolin needs the potential to grow in ED personality direction, which he has. But he won't end up ED if he's to attract spren instead of reviving his Blade. My idea of his future is reviving his Blade in book 4 and dying in book 5 (probably with Dalinar). Their deaths will effect all major characters and the reader... Yeah, it's sad. I really like him, yet I'm afraid he won't make it in the second five books. I pity Shallan... Adolin will spoil his daughter all the way That's if he's alive to see her grow up
  9. It's a really cool idea I'll try to help you with what I know, but I am not a specialist. I'm not sure if a moon of 50% size of the Earth could have the gravity to keep the atmosphere from escaping unless it's mass is similar, but that'll make it twice as dense as the Earth, which also means more heavy elements, and I don't know how that will change the soil and everything else. You should also check whether or not these moons would eventually crash into the planet because of the gravity and what's the stable orbit for them. Unfortunately, I don't know how this should be calculated. Whether or not the moon is habitabal will also depend on how far from the star it is and what kind of star your solar system has. Google 'habitabal zone' to get the right equations. I agree a thicker atmosphere will be needed and that will mean higher pressure, so to get an idea how life adapts to this take a look at some sea creatures that live under similar pressure as the one your moon will have. To have a life-friendly temperature you also should consider the albedo of the moon; I recommend to have lots of water (it'll store heat for the sunny weeks and get cooler slower) and forests to keep it low. If you have snow, it'll reflect the light in the sunny weeks and get very cold very fast during the two week night, so you risk the moon freezing. If the atmosphere has more CO2 (very active volcanoes could explain this), then you could use it for better greenhouse effect that'll keep the moon warmer and you'll have more and possibly larger plants (good for the many forests I recommend), although these two weeks without sunlight... Plants must adapt to that somehow, but I have no suggestions how, sorry. Consider consulting with the department of physics and astronomy in a local university, they should be able to help you.
  10. I wouldn't say Radiants have major and minor surge. Just because Kal can't do much with adhesion doesn't mean it's minor. And his passive seems to be related to precisely adhesion, so there's no reason for ED passive not to come from Progression - Adolin gets hunches on how things will progress - occasional intuition - because his bond with the Blade is not Nahel bond. Take away sound and picture (Illumination) from a vision of the future (Truthwatchers) and you are left with the gist of what's to happened - intuition. He's not redundant! Though he's an excellent candidate for a major character death... Anyway, I expect other surgebinders to appear, there the WoB about the second Lightweaver, so it's quite possible to see in future several members of an Order. In fact, it's a necessity if the KR are to be truly refound. To be fair the story of Adolin and Shallan's child friendship with Kal and Tarah's child was your idea, so don't complain
  11. Growth and regrowth are only subsurges. If we look at progression in another way, it's how everything and everyone progress, which passively gives bases for intuition and foresight. He'll stay main for the first five with Lift as minor. Then she becomes main in the next five and her flashbacks I suspect will cover what happened in the ten-years in-world break between books 5 and 6, not so much Oaths as I think we'll witness most Oaths in the first five books anyway. Seeing several Radiants from an Order is the only way to fully understand it. That's the future spin-off series
  12. It fits quite nicely If Progression is part of what gives Ren foresight, then its variation without the support of the Illumination surge (that adds picture and sound) could very well be intuition. I'm not a fan of this Ash book, why not Chana? I'd prefer not to miss any Order as far as flashback characters are concerned, but that's Brandon's decision and I'm sure he has his reasons. Adolin and Lift are two different people. If they both become ED, that won't bother me. Oaths aren't the most important aspect. You can progress to an Oath in different ways, you can say it differently. It gives variety to the Order. Are we not to have any minor surgebinders just because the book on their Order is yet to come? Brandon decided not to give Navani a book since Dalinar's will cover much of her story and Adolin probably doesn't get a book, because 3 other Kholins will have and this isn't the Kholin's Archive after all This is how I roll
  13. So far passive powers seem to derive from surges - the Memory coming from manipulation of light, foresight from progression and illumination, Kal's ability to dodge without looking from adhesion. How does intuition go with division and abrahision? I think ED are frivolous only on the surface, which would fit Adolin as he is seen as a spoiled wominazer and daddy's boy, but let's agree to disagree on this, because neither of us can really tell what ED are like. I agree having two main characters of the same Order makes little sense. However, Lift will be protagonist in the second five books. There's no reason not to have an ED until then, otherwise we won't be seeing any Radiants of Orders whose books are yet to come, which makes even less sense. Adolin won't be the focus character and simply knowing the Oaths won't spoil a future book, because the wording changes (only the meaning has to be the same) and the Oaths aren't the most interesting things a character could offer anyway. No way for Tarah, Kal just has a thing for LW girls, that's why he fancies Shallan SW sounds so serious... About the other, I agree with Moogle's theory on the comet-spren being the Blades (even though I also think SB didn't break their Oaths and their spren are comet-like, so this is quite the contradiction I have going on for me ). Having flashbacks doesn't make one Radiant, just that his/her arc is suitable for telling more about the Order. Which kind of favors the said character becoming a surgebinder, but all surgebinders can't get books, so Adolin is most definitely reviving his Shardblade until the end of book 4, because it's just so awesome. If he doesn't, I'll be in denial. Man, that's long. Two posts long Navani is an awesome candidate for a Willshapper as well, she fits maxal's husband's (that's also long, but stay with me, it's over ) take on the Order. Though I do have Rysn in mind as a potential WS. I even expected her to get a book on her own, not Ash. For the one main Radiant - see above. Lift is currently not even a minor character. I hope we'll see more surgebinders before the next book is over. It was a bad example to give about bravery and hunting. Regardless, Adolin's source of courage to me is his love for his family, which is not something I associate primarily with DB. Well said, have an up-vote! Could he revive his Blade with this particular Oath? May be the first won't be enough. It could make for a very emotional scene. edit: spelling, better late than never
  14. Those are different quotes: the ugly lizard-crab-thing is Hoid's audience in the epilogue before Jasnah arrived and is from Hoid's children story he (almost) told Kal in prison.
  15. Doing the right thing doesn't equal being kind and good-hearted. I imagine DB to be the embodiment of 'you have to be cruel to be kind', which is bound to make them misunderstood and unappreciated. It was never said that there will be one main Radiant per Order and Lift is not care-free. You can't be care-free when you live alone on the streets not knowing when you'll get your next meal or find shelter. She looks care-free, which is different and similar to Adolin. Don't forget Radiants are their own persons and it's unreasonable to expect all members of an Order to be the same. Similar yes, but outright copy-paste personality. Correction, the WoB is Willshappers only. The clarification of Dustbringers got a small nod according to the person there, but that's sujective if you ask me. Nonetheless I think the DB would approve or at least accept it, just wanted to be clear on the WoB. However, keep in mind that it's perfectly fine for Adolin to not act accordingly to his future Order ideal since he's bondless. What he did might change him to become a Radiant, it's not a necessity to already be acting according to certain Ideals. I know Eshonai is popular for Willshapper, but I don't believe she'll end up being the first non-human Radiant despite her arc being fit to tell us more on WS, we still need an actual WS. But I won't argue if you think she's our future WS. Who's the SW? Taln doesn't count as Radiant. Adolin could fit here in the future - he didn't back down on the 4vs1, in time he might develop the SW never-give-up attitude. I don't see any character fitting for SW Of course he gets the bigger picture, he's not stupid, but that's not what I meant. Adolin cares about the bigger issues because of his father. If it wasn't for Dalinar, Adolin wouldn't care to 'unite them' or make a grand march against the Parshedi between highstorms. He'd duel and drink wine with pretty girls. For what it's worth, Kaladin isn't big-picture kind of guy either. It's not an insult or a bad thing. Exactly the same with Adolin - he isn't barave for the sake of being brave either. Otherwise he'd enjoy hunting as a way to show his courage.
  16. Ah, you're right! The 'all' is about the Orders, not the Radiants. Yeah, it would have been very weird otherwise, but I assumed it'd be only for the first five since the second five will have different set of characters. I wonder when Brandon said that - before or after WoR? Does he count the Heralds as having seen members of all Orders?
  17. Hm, he thinks, but that could change. There goes my theory of Tarah the Lightweaver. .. And I wanted there to be some random surgebinder we never heard of. Meh, I'll live with it. Hm, although it could mean we'll see people who won't make it all the way to being KR, which does not exclude new unknown surgebinders... I'll stop over-analyzing now Thanks for the quote! The last one is probably Hoid (he lightweaved the smoke I believe), yet that's a different WoB than the other two I pointed; there's still room for a Lightweaver in Kal's past. If Kal knows 2 LW in the meaning of people able to lightweave, that's false because he knows 3: Renarin, Hoid and Shallan (the WoB about 2 is post-WoR, so Ren counts). Therefor Brandon must have meant Kal knowing two people that belong to the LW Order.
  18. One WoB says Kaladin has met two Lightweavers (which means lightweaving the power doesn't count since bothRenarin and Hoid can do it along with Shallan) and another says we haven't seen another Lightweaver in the meaning of member of the Order, so it must be someone from Kal's past. Whether or not seeing someone in a flashback counts is an open discussion. Where's the WoB on us seeing all potential Radiants? Never seen it, but it's really hard to keep up with all of them. I'll be a little disappointed if no future characters become surgebinders....
  19. Waves could point towards Lightweavers or Truthwatchers since they share Illumination. It could be Stonewards since water has cohesion properties and tension. Or Willshaper's, because it looks cool/odd. I don't know I don't even remember a Blade with waves. On the TW and ED essences, someone (I think Moogle) made a theory the sections are under the wrong Order and should be switched. After all, the AA is an in-world creation that could have mistakes. Yes, Lift is not concerned about bigger issues and Nalan confirmed that's typical about her Order. Adolin isn't concerned about the biggest issues either. Sure, he cares about his family, but he doesn't share Dalinar's passion about the faith of Aethkar or Roshar. Of course, he doesn't want them destroyed, but he doesn't spend time thinking about the bigger picture. He's not really looking forward being a Highprince. He'd prefer to just duel and wasn't keen on being a soldier. His sense of duty begins and ends with his family and men, which fits Nalan's descriptions. Of course, we don't know if Releasers are concerned about larger than life issues... I don't know why you (and anyone else) get that sense of one Radiant per Order. Pattern said several spren peoples were all bonded before the Recreanse, and very few like the Stromfather survived. I expect to not see all Orders in the first five books and other Orders to have several members. There is WoB Kaladin has met two Lightweavers, and Hoid doesn't count as a member of the Order despite being able to Lightweave.
  20. I'm pretty sure one of the reasons Brandon isn't on the forum is to escape any accusations of taking fans' theories and plot suggestions and canonizing them. I've heard authors being sued for such things. While Peter has said to read to Brandon things he found funny, I seriously doubt Brandon is short of ideas. If a theory explains everything, then chances are Brandon already has thought of it and and that's why it explains everything. He's not the kind of author who throws random things, hoping they'll make sense in the end
  21. In every book: members or Bridge Four die; Every plot to kill Dalinar fails, because Kaladin; Shallan admits she has killed someone; Navani makes a new type of fabrial; Dalinar's visions don't really help.
  22. Crystals are the ED soulcasting property according to the AA, although Ym's spren was described as growing crystals and I'm inclined to believe he was a Truthwatcher... You're right, it's too soon to say which Order the Blade belonged to. It tells us DB broke their oaths, DB likely had squires, Dalinar hadn't seen in his visions any other Plate resembling another he's seen in his life, so no DB, WR or SW Plates in Alethkar or with the Parshendi. That's all that comes to my mind for now.
  23. I imagine Edgedancers like that: looking chill and relaxed, care-free on the outside, but being very different when you get to know one of them. Windrunners break the law when they don't consider it right according to Syl and Kal's prison conversation; Jasnah has broken the law; Shallan has broken the law... Overall the law doesn't seem very popular among the Radiants. Since 'I will follow the law above all else' is Skybreakers' second oath, there can't be a case of bending the law without killing one's spren, so Skybreakers aren't allowed to bend the law. Being friendly and easy-going means he has the potential to become someone with a healing presence; just like he has the potential of caring deeply about everyone, but isn't quite there yet. Becoming more obedient just doesn't seen right for him. Though the strong case of his intuition doesn't point in favor of Edgedancers. Intuition sounds like Truthwatchers' thing, like an early form of their foresight. However, Ren did not experience such hunches. I don't think hunches can make someone more obedient, quite the opposite - it gives a reason to go against direct orders. I can't place this ability... if it's to be considered some form of passive ability. May be it's better to discuss what KR Order spren is Adolin's Blade. But all I remember are vines, which brings me back to Edgedancers. What are the odds of Adolin's Plate being unique or Dalinar never seeing another like it? Adolin having the only Dustbringer's Plate laying around? Dalinar's inner dialogue didn't sound like it's usual to see Plates that look alike, that's why the WoB on it surprises me.
  24. this is an interesting idea. I don't think anyone enforced the second attributes of each Order, but that they are naturally developed by each Radiant as s/he progresses. I agree Adolin is brave, however the source of his bravery are his loved ones. Not 'bravery vs care', but that his caring and loving nature gives him strength and courage. Just try to imagine Releasers personality - I think of them as some rude and overall unpleasant individuals. Now take a look at the refined, eloquent and deadly Edgedancers. Wouldn't Adolin and his cologne fit right in? By killing Sadeas, Adolin became less obedient, so it's not an act that I perceive as helpful towards his Dustbringer way, however it's quite fitting for the healing done by removing rotten limb that I associate with Edgedancers. I still don't agree bravery was involved, but let's agree to disagree on this one If we don't take healing literally, it fits Adolin's personality to a degree: he's light-hearted, makes people laugh and enjoy themselves, even Kaladin was relaxed around him at the end. Now, I understand why you think Adolin could become a Dustbringer and I agree. However, there's an arguably equal chance of him becoming an Edgedancer, so I want to show the arguments in favor of this. Since I'm inclined to believe Adolin will revive his Blade that has vines, I'm in the Edgedancer camp. If he is to attract a spren, then there are several options of Orders we know too little to speculate. However, I don't think attracting a spren is the natural progression of Adolin's character, otherwise he's the same as his brother and father. Reviving a Blade is so much cooler and would make him unique. If so, then how come Dalinar, who has seen dozens of Shardplates, has never seen another similar to Adolin's? His reaction wasn't like 'Oh, look, a Plate that looks like another I've seen, it happens', he was more like 'Stormfather, how is this possible?'; like he had never seen two Plates look alike.
  25. I'm a bit curious how Dalinar recognized Adolon's Plate. Didn't anyone in all those centuries paint it? It's not like Plate has recognizable patterns like Blades.
