  1. Ten years ago, Elantris was first published fell. The gods of the majestic city withered into wretched creatures, reviled and despised by all. The city, which had once been the center of science, learning, peace, prosperity, and Elantrian Magics, was turned into a prison, and the Elantrians who had survived the upheaval were locked inside and left to bemoan their fate. Over time the city, like its inhabitants, withered and rotted. Outside of Elantris, in the city of Kae, life had moved on. Merchants traded, pirates plundered, kings governed, priests taught, young couples fell in love, and… something darker was stirring. Seinalan knew this. As patriarch of the Korathi church he was kept well abreast of current events, and the reports he had been receiving lately had disturbed him. The Jeskeri Mystery cults- once a minor nuisance in faraway kingdoms- had spread and gained foothold here in Kae, complete with maiden sacrifices, pronounced curses, and all the other vulgar pagan rites. If Seinalan’s reports were accurate, and he had every reason to believe they were, the cults had even infested the nobility and the wealthy elite of Kae! Seinalan hadn’t had a choice- he had come to the city to call the people to action, to root out and eliminate any cultists among them. There was a knock at the door. “You may enter,” Seinalan called. He looked himself over in the mirror. He tucked a loose strand of his luxurious blonde hair back in place then flashed his winning smile. Perfect. The door opened to admit one of his attendants. “The people are gathered and awaiting your speech, your Holiness.” “It is good,” Seinalan said, “You may lead the way.” Seinalan followed his attendant through the corridors and stairwells until they reached the King’s court. The large room was packed full of people, mostly nobility and wealthy merchants, but with a fair number of commoners as well, all of them anxiously awaiting the word of their Patriarch. Seinalan smiled at them- the same smile he had practiced in the mirror before. “People of Kae, Domi be praised!” He began, speaking loud enough that all in the room could hear him. “It is always a joy to my heart to see your faces and to be among you. But I fear the reason I have come is not a pleasant one. There is a darkness growing...” He trailed off. Something felt wrong. His heart beat quickly, and he felt hot. He swallowed and tried to continue. “A darkness, growing among you. The Jesker-” He broke off again, this time with a gasp. His heart was pounding now, he could hear it in his ears and his head throbbed along with its steady beat, and he felt… something.... pressing against him. It felt like something was trying to strangle him and tear him apart at the same time, from the inside. He staggered, clutching at the lectern for support. All throughout the room people gasped and cried out in shock, eyes wide with horror. The chest of Seinalan’s magnificent robe was wet. He looked down and saw something dark starting to seep through the heavily embroidered cloth. It was blood. His blood. He fumbled at the ties of his robe. His hands were shaking, but he managed to loose them, and pulled his robe open. The skin of his chest had split open in a jagged, intricate pattern, as if some twisted calligraphist had used a filleting knife to carve an Aon into his flesh. But this was no Aonic symbol- the twisting patterns were those used by the Jeskeri Mystery cults. Even as Seinalan watched, a curving line split open, finishing the symbol, blood seeping from the wounds. The room tilted, and Seinalan found himself lying on the floor, staring up at the terror-stricken faces of those who had rushed to his aid. One of his priests, kneeling over him, was speaking to him. It was hard to hear him- Seinalan realized that the room was filled with the sounds of screams and panicked shouting. He blinked his eyes, trying to clear his head. “... is doing this?” the priest was asking. “Jeskeri Mysteries…” he gasped, his voice barely more than a whisper. The beating of his heart was growing fainter now. Slowing. “But… How?” the priest asked. “Where?” “Close… Here… in the… palace. You… must… find...” He trailed off. Speaking was so difficult. It made him tired, so very, very tired. He heard the sound of someone shouting in a commanding voice- the captain of the King’s guard? “Bar the doors! Nobody is to leave the palace until the culprits are found!” It was getting harder to breath, and it took all his effort just to keep his eyes in focus. He blinked again, rolling his head back and forth. As he did he caught sight of the faces of those gathered around him. Priests, Kings, Dukes, and more, all looked on with horror and concern, except for one face. One was smiling. Seinalan opened his mouth to accuse the figure, but was seized by a fit of racking, shuddering coughs. He lifted his hand instead- it was so heavy!- to point, but the smiling face turned and stepped back into the crowd. Seinalan laid back, all his energy spent. He knew this was the end. His heart had slowed to almost nothing. He had no strength to move, to speak, even to breath. He looked up, past the people, to the light streaming through the stained glass window above. The light of Domi, beckoning him, telling him it was time to return home. It was beautiful. --- Day 1 begins! Patriarch Seinalan was killed by Jeskeri Cultists! It is up to you to find them and eliminate them! If you have not done so recently, please go review the Rule Clarifications post- I have added a lot of things to it as people have been asking me questions- several of which deal with corner-case win conditions. And other things will likely be added to it as time goes on. If you have any further questions, please PM me and/or Tulir. Day 1 will end in roughly 43 hours (apologies for the late start today), at 9:00pm on Sunday MDT.
  2. Okay, everyone should have received a PM from Tulir or me telling your your role/faction/items by now. If you have not yet received one, or if something looks amiss, please PM us and let us know! The game will be starting soon, but will probably be a little delayed. I promised my wife I would start painting the bathroom tonight, and need to make some progress on that before it gets too late. I will finish the writeup and start the game before I go to bed tonight though. Good luck players!
  3. Welcome newcomers! Sign ups are officially closed now. Look for a PM from Tulir and/or me sometime within the next 24 hours with your role and faction. The game will start tomorrow at 9:00pm MDT (roughly 27 hours from now). That will also be the rollover time for cycles. Also, after talking with Tulir, we're going to try 48hr day cycles and 24hr night cycles and see how it goes. EDIT: The 2nd post of this thread shows the official player list. Note that I have already designated who the Elantrians will be, since that is public knowledge and could affect the Dula's choice.
  4. On my phone, so quoting is too much of a hassle. Technically, in a way, EVERYBODY is a lover with the GMs, since if Tulir and I die the game ends. But in direct answer to your questions, no, the Dula may not pair someone up with a GM, mod, or anyone not playing the game. Only other players are valid targets. To those of you who have to take off, it has been noted. EDIT: also, if we have any latecomers, note that you have roughly 3 hours before I'll be closing up sign ups. EDIT2: @Winter Cloud: yes, what Bort said. If a pinch hitter steps in they take over everything for that character as if they had been that character the whole time.
  5. Actually, I've been thinking about it, and I changed my mind on the love-triangle scenario. A couple of times actually. I decided that it would be a little harsh making it so that if one of three people died the other two go down with them. So I'm ruling this instead: If you end up with more than one lover, you don't take your life unless both your lovers are dead. So in other words, take the following situation: Bella and Edward are lovers, and Bella and Jacob are lovers. Edward gets killed (yay!). Bella and Jacob stay alive together. If Bella had been killed instead, both Edward and Jacob die too. This makes it a little less harsh on the players if a love triangle forms
  6. Ooh good questions. 1. The selection of the odiv and the conversions will all happen secretly- there will be no mention of them in the write ups. However, the converts will privately be told who all of the converts are each day, so it should be obvious to those paying attention that the odiv had been selected once the conversions start happening twice per day. 2. I will leave it up to the Cultists to sort out who to make the kill each night. If I get more than one kill order for the SAME person, then the first cultist to have sent me an order will be the one who actually performs it. If I get more than one kill order targeting DIFFERENT people, then no kill will take place that night. EDIT: done and done!
  7. Yes sign ups are still open. They will probably close in about 24-36 hours, and then the game will start on Friday or Saturday (I need to give the Dula time to pick a pair of lovers). And yeah, as Haelbarde pointed out, that's only 1 cycle you will have missed...
  8. You know, the best part is that being a Dula is far from the only way to troll other players. I'm tempted to make both Wilson and Claincy Pirates and see what happens. In fact, I'm really tempted to secretly make EVERYBODY pirates AND lovers and watch the hilarity ensue with the first lynching.
  9. Ooh, tough luck Meta! I capped this game at 25 players, so there's not any room for you. Sorry about that... okay okay, just kidding, don't mod-slap me, alright? So I guess that makes Gamma the moderator for this game? 30 is still pretty big... I'm curious, what is the record? Which game had the most people sign up for it? Good advice. Most of the difficult role juggling stuff will be during the day phase, but that's good to keep in mind. I'll talk it over with Tulir and see what he thinks.
  10. Whoops, just saw this question. All I will say is that lots of things are possible as the Elantrians explore the ruined city. Hmm, I can't wait. When do we get to find out what it is? Yes I remember. This is a little different scenario, however. In my QF game players weren't supposed to be able to communicate with each other in the main thread, but I left them a tiny bit of wiggle room that (of course) spiraled way out of control. In this game, the Hoed limitation to 5 words is for flavor more than anything, so I don't care if the Hoed work out codes for communicating with the other players. Really, the main thing restricting them is that they can't vote or use their actions. EDIT: Quick question for everyone- and particularly those players with a lot of experience: This game is already at 25 players after only 2 days of sign ups, so it's going to be big. I had originally planned on 48 hour days and 24 hour nights, but do you think that's enough time for the night phases? Would 48 hours be better- or too long? Really I'm fine either way, so I'm curious what you guys would prefer
  11. Yes! Welcome aboard Clancy! The only way you can ever start a PM with another player is if you have a Seon, or if you and that other player are the Gyorn and Odiv (and really, the Gyorn/Odiv PM is just their own personal evil doc). So yeah, PMs will be very restricted this game. This is intentional. Mua ha ha ha ha!!!! I find it ironic that it was beginning this game that let me reach Torturer of Heralds. Now I have the image in my mind of the Heralds being force to play ridiculously complicated games of Sanderson Elimination over and over again for all eternity. Yeah, basically the Odiv would become a traitor among their midst. He keeps his role as cultist, complete with access to the cultist doc and the ability to perform the cultist kill action if selected to do it, however, his faction is now Shu-Dereth, and his goal is to see Shu-Dereth succeed.
  12. You know, two weeks is only about 4 days of game time- you could coast through the game until then. The game will surely last a lot longer than 4 cycles. Or, if I can't persuade you to join, you could sign on as a pinch hitter and take over someone's role if they go inactive. EDIT: In answer to a few people's questions: Does the Shu-Korath Priest get told if they scan Gyorn or Odiv that their target is a convert? Basically does Gyorn or Odiv count as a convert for the game's purposes? The Odiv will show up as a Convert. The Gyorn will not. Not that it will really make a difference in the game, since their status as Gyorn/Odiv is far more important than their being a convert. Does Gyorn/Odiv get told that their convert failed if he/she targets the Shu-Korath Priest? The Gyorn and Odiv will know who all the converts are, so they'll be able to see if a conversion fails. They will not be told why it failed (it could be because they targeted a Korathi priest, it could be because their target had a Korathi pendant). Does Gyorn also have a chance of getting a role? No, Gyorn is his only role. However, he is eligible to receive special items. (Note that Cultists DO have a chance at getting non-faction roles. Likewise, the Odiv retains any roles he had before his conversion) If I have a poison someone using the poison vial and they have a Seon. Does that player lose their Seon ability while sick? No. If a Cult Member gets turned into a Elantrain or even Hoid can they still communicate freely in their spy doc? If so is the Hoid still restricted to those 5 words in the spy doc. Hmm, that's one I hadn't considered. I'm going to say yes. Hoed can still communicate in the Cultist doc and in PMs that they are eligible for, but they are still limited to their 5 words. Good question. I'll add that clarification to the rules. When does the game start? I was going to give it 1 week, so it will start next Friday or maybe Saturday. The thing is that I haven't heard from Tulir in a few weeks, so I haven't been able to coordinate with him to nail down a firm start time and cycle rollover times. Once he gets back to me and we sort that out I'll let everyone know for sure.
  13. How dare you interrupt my lurking! Yes, any game PMs must include at least one GM, preferably both. Right now it looks as if Tulir will be handling the Main thread writeups, and I'll be handling the Elantris writeups. We will work together as best as we can to record all the actions and tally votes and etc. Hopefully that way we can cover each other and avoid making any mistakes.
  14. Welcome! I'm honored to have an admin sign up for my game! In answer to your question, it's the same for either one of them. The Lovers win condition supersedes any others- they are just trying to survive to the end of the game. The only situation in which the Gyorn and/or Odiv are still alive at the end of the game is if they convert everyone and Shu-Dereth wins. So in this case, the love-struck Gyorn/Odiv would want to convert their fellow lover, then try to keep both of them alive until everyone else has been converted.
