  1. Here's an interesting school of thought on the Justification of War: "School of Salamanca[edit] Growing from Aquinas arguments was the School of Salamanca, which expanded on Thomistic understanding of natural law and just war. Given that war is one of the worst evils suffered by mankind, the adherents of the School reasoned that it ought to be resorted to only when it was necessary in order to prevent an even greater evil. A diplomatic agreement is preferable, even for the more powerful party, before a war is started. Examples of "just war" are: In self-defense, as long as there is a reasonable possibility of success. Preventive war against a tyrant who is about to attack. War to punish a guilty enemy. A war is not legitimate or illegitimate simply based on its original motivation: it must comply with a series of additional requirements: It is necessary that the response be commensurate to the evil; use of more violence than is strictly necessary would constitute an unjust war. Governing authorities declare war, but their decision is not sufficient cause to begin a war. If the people oppose a war, then it is illegitimate. The people have a right to depose a government that is waging, or is about to wage, an unjust war. Once war has begun, there remain moral limits to action. For example, one may not attack innocents or kill hostages. It is obligatory to take advantage of all options for dialogue and negotiations before undertaking a war; war is only legitimate as a last resort. Under this doctrine, expansionist wars, wars of pillage, wars to convert infidels or pagans, and wars for glory are all inherently unjust." (All from Wikipedia) On one hand, the Alethi war is certainly "to punish a guilty enemy." On the other, they haven't undertaken all options for negotiation; Dalinar himself says so. Also, while the Shattered Plains fighting isn't entirely for glory, glory is a good amount of the reason it happened. Which brings up the question of whether we have to view Alethi wars in a different code of ethics: they have been commanded by their God (at least according to Modern Vorin Theology) to be good at it, so that they can retake the Tranquiline Halls. EDIT: Also also most of our theories about justification of war mention something about chance of success being necessary. While that is certainly the case on the Shattered Plains, doesn't it really go against the Ideals of the KR? "Journey before Destination" and such?
  2. So we've seen Hoid doing things hundreds and even thousands of years apart. And yet he's never even described as "old." So I see three possibilities: 1) Time Travel. Hoid has a TARDIS or some such thing which allows both Worldhopping AND Timehopping. However I don't think this is likely. 2) Worldhopping causes you to miss time. These planets are all rather far apart, so I suppose it's theoretically that when you Worldhop, you show up there later than you left, and how much later is based on the distance and the speed of light and such. 3) Hoid is immortal (or at least doesn't age.). This is the most likely, in my opinion, since we've seen tons of other characters live wicked long lives: Taln, Vasher, and The Lord Ruler, to name a few. So what's the secret to Hoid's agelessness? He isn't of the 5th heightening, we know that (Siri would have noticed.) He probably isn't doing the Lord Ruler's thing, seeing as he's not a Terrisman. So what is it? Do we have WoB?
  3. So WoB is that there is a Terriswoman in Warbreaker. Yet I have not found this anywhere. Anyone else know where she is hiding?
  4. I am so incredibly happy about this.
  5. the door to (I beg of you say The Dor)
  6. Buy. Hoid will die.
  7. Welcome welcome welcome! Enjoy your stay! You are in room 207, we'll take your luggage up for you, and would you like to see a room service menu?
  8. I see where you're coming from, but I also don't really see any evidence that backs this up. At least, not any evidence that can't be taken multiple ways.
  9. I use its magical properties to expel demons sometimes.
  10. This is a box I can type things in but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to type in it.

  11. Not a very complex theory, but I like it. North of the Purelake are the Reshi Isles and Reshi sea. Bast in The Name of the Wind calls Kvothe Reshi. The Name of the Wind was published in 2007. The Way of Kings was published in 2010. I'm pretty sure Brandon likes Pat Rothfuss (he did send him an advance copy of TWoK). Ergo, it seems that Brandon is naming places after Kvothe.
  12. I don't think that quote is enough. "A long time" can be a year, five years, ten years, a thousand years, all depending on your lifespan. So if he is a Herald, that would be a very long long time, but if he's not then it's probably five to ten years. I really don't think it actually says anything. EDIT: Also, I subscribe to the theory that Skar Killed Gaz (link in my signature). So that would make him seem like he's not a Herald.
  13. So there are various pronunciations that I wonder about in TWoK: Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor (Rock's real name) Jah Keved Szeth Taravangian Aimia Sadeas And probably more that I'm forgetting at the moment. My best guesses for these: new-moo-who-koo-mah-key-ah-key-ay-ee-ah-loon-ah-more yah keh-ved zeth tar-ah-van-gee-an ay-me-ah Sad-ah-as However, these are just guesses. The only WoB is that the "J" in Jasnah is pronounced as a "Y" (hence the pronunciation of Jah Keved. Any disagreements? Other words that are ambiguous?
  14. I'm in--though I suck at almost every game.
  15. $10 says he worldhops to Nalthis and plays Tarachin with Lightsong. And loses.
  16. I deal with the drivers by the theory that if they hit me, it's their problem. However, now that I'm not just a pedestrian, but a driver as well, I may need to rethink that...
  17. A fellow Dota player! Hello!

  20. NB: the rules of this community involve saying nothing "stronger than 'crap,'" so be warned that the FFDP songs following don't follow that rule. At all. Not even close. For Kaladin: Bad Company's Bad Company For Kelsier (especially when he's killing nobles): Five Finger Death Punch's War is the Answer For Both: Five Finger Death Punch: White Knuckles
