  1. All updates completed to this point! Sorry for any delays.

Where can I find this map? In case I want to know if anyone else is in—uhhhh, Denver?

In case you haven't found it yet, the map can be found here.

Can you move me to Missouri?

I've placed a new marker for you in Missouri, since I didn't find a prior marker for you on the map. Has your username changed? If so, I'll correct the out of date entry.

Sorry, I'm a little confused about these posts. Right now I've added @Emery the Steelrunnerto the map in Idaho Falls, and @EmulatonStromenkiin in West Virginia. If this is incorrect, please tell me how to fix it and I'll be happy to do so.

    Hey, does anyone know how to get little sharder location icons off? Because i clicked on the link and now every single time i open google maps the little icons are there ;-;

Nice! Now you have reminders of this inclusive fandom everywhere you go!

My best guess is that you've added the Sharders around the World map to your personal account, in which case it should show up as an available list in "Your Places" under the dropdown menu. If so, you can set that list to be hidden by default, or delete it entirely. Don't worry, it won't get rid of the master list.

  4. I've added both of you.

Do you have a non-Ookla name you'd like me to use, or is this your semi-permanent username?

I live in China. Is that enough, or do I need to be more specific?

"China" is good enough--it's all about how specific you are comfortable with being. Feel free to PM me if you want the map marker moved from where I placed it.

  5. I've gone ahead and created a site blog and started posting there. The blog feature of 17S is hidden enough that I generally forget it exists, so I believe the danger of someone stumbling upon it inadvertently and seeing spoilers is minimal. However, if the mods disagree I'm willing to delete it and find another solution.

  6. I am liveblogging my reactions to the Rhythm of War preview chapters, and plan to continue doing so through the rest of the book after official release. Currently I'm doing so in a Google Doc. Would it be appropriate to start a thread in the RoW spoiler board for this, to post my chapter by chapter reactions? My reactions are fairly extensive and are not structured in a way that's especially conducive for discussion, so I would feel odd about posting them in the current chapter-by-chapter discussion threads, or in the post-release discussion threads that aren't broken out by chapter.

At the same time, I'm not sure that having a thread dedicated to or centered around one user's thoughts is necessarily a good fit for 17S as a site. What do the mods think?

(I will note that I also did a similar process for Starsight and Oathbringer, also currently stored on Google Docs. So if this is deemed an appropriate use of the site, I might also consider migrating those over despite not being current releases.)

As a fellow returnee, I welcome you back into the fold.  Let's celebrate with waffles!

    Yay waffles!

I swear I recognize your avatar from another forum--are you active on Space Battles or Sufficient Velocity?

Speaking of which, I had somehow forgotten what a wonderful corner of the internet 17S is. I had been back on the site for all of 20 minutes when I suddenly realized that I hadn't come across a bashing post, or a troll, and I didn't expect to. Thank you once again to all of the staff who have somehow cultivated a shockingly friendly culture on this site.

  8. It's been almost 18 months since I logged in, so I figured I should drop a line here to say thanks for holding down the fort. Initially I took a break to finish my PhD (turns out that obsessing over online forums can contribute to a detrimental effect on your productivity), but then when I finally graduated I got sucked into the Worm fandom and have been reading and writing way too many fanfics in that community.

If you don't know me from before, I am the proud author of "If Doctor Seuss Wrote the Stormlight Archive" (linked in my sig) and I used to help with the tracking thread (I see several notifications from people tagging me over there, so I'll be trying to belatedly follow up on those things right after this).

I have a year and a half of WoBs to catch up on, plus I need to read Starsight and anything else that I've been neglecting since then. If you have any favorite or particularly revelatory WoB from the past year, link me to it!

I'm looking forward to being back.

  9. Thanks for all the kind words! I'm glad that you have been enjoying my Seussified Roshar.

I did in fact give Brandon a printed copy when I saw him last year. I only saw his  to the first page, but I think he appreciated it.

@ccstat Do you have those visibility calculations in any digital form? I was curious about looking into those myself.

I think so, at least parts of them were calculated with Excel. I'll look for my file, but it may be a few days.

  11. Well, if I were to speculate I'd say it's because Nazh is aware that it isn't too fanciful, because he's seen one just like it at the point in time he's collecting these papers.

That's just a guess, but since Argent can't comment let's pretend he chimed in here to say that I'm exactly right.

The best alternative if that's not the answer is that he's trying prompt Khriss to build him one.

Just finished reading this actually. It's pretty good, lot's of detailed feruchemy mechanics discussion. But it may literally be longer than Oathbringer.

Yeah, it's currently sitting at 620K words. It just reached the end of what the author is calling "season one," and there appear to be firm outlines for at least one more season.

The good news, if you decide you like it, is that there are regular updates (at least weekly) and it's only taken 18 months to get this far. So while I've only recently started consuming web serials, this one stands with the best in terms of frequent content.

  13. Thanks for getting some confirmation on these, Argent. It's always nice to get a look at the answer key.

For the "fanciful (ha)" question--I translated it the same way, but on further inspection that question mark looks funny, almost as if it were in the font for annotations by Nazh.

For the Taker of Secrets page, it's great to get some more confirmation:

This is what I got from Miranda:

"The border contains the Thaylen symbols, including words like "Sja-Anat," "Keeper of Secrets," and I think "Corrupted" is in there as well somewhere (that is, if I understood the translation key correctly, in that no vowels are included, and since there isn't a letter for "c" I excluded that from "Secrets" and "corrupted"). Some of the symbols have been flipped or mirrored to fit better with each other. I'm not entirely sold with how I wrote the word "Sja-Anat" so I can adjust that later on to make it fit better."

@Subvisual Haze was absolutely right about the flipped, mirrored symbols and strokes. They get the credit for figuring out those symbol redundancies. I'm also a bit frustrated with this response, though, because the confirmed words are the ones we were most confident of. For the record, this is the translation as we have it. Bold are confident assignments, while italics are sections of text with low confidence transliterations or undeciphered words, including some letters obscured by the artistic misty border.

    Quote

    Top: Corrupted || VLJPT

Left: Sja Anat Corrupted || TJSh?

Right: Now Sja Anat Keeper Of Secrets TR || R?S

    Bottom: ?? Darkness

If anyone wants to take a crack at the remaining portions, the updated translation key is here.

    12 hours ago, Argent said:

It would be supremely funny to me if @ccstat's guesses at the beginning of page 2 are not at all what Miranda meant to write, and it was just lucky that some of the symbols lined up to say things like "spies."

As it happens, most of my guesses in that post were way off. "Corrupted" and "Darkness" were the only things even close to correct.

  14. Another sharder (Kearin on discord, not sure what their handle is here) recently pointed me to Life Ore Death by Obloquy, and I'm enjoying it a lot. It takes a full feruchemist from shortly after the Catacendre and dimension-hops her into the DC universe.

The interactions between the Metallic Arts and DC powers are interesting and well thought out, and the main character's backstory is not only awesome but also fits well enough into the gaps of Era 1 events that I am adopting it as headcanon.
