Sorry! Maybe I should have stopped for the night a bit earlier :-/ Thanks for correcting it.

In the print book the text was a light grey, like the text was faded out.

I'm not sure this oathpact was the same capital-O-Oathpact that the Radiants had, it's possible it's something else that works similarly enough to be called by the same word. Which would make sense, I think, since we know that the Radiants are a result of spren trying to emulate what the Almighty did for the Heralds. I wonder if this oathpact is what allowed the Nahel bond to be based on oaths rather than surgebinding ability being given just at the whim of spren like it was before Nohadon's time. As for non-sentient life on other planets in the Rosharan system, I think it's likely that Brandon meant to say non-life-supporting planets and misspoke. It was after midnight at this point and he'd been answering questions for three and a half hours already. Especially with what he said about how we would not expect Roshar's star to have life-supporting planets, I would think that the only planets with life would be shard-based.

All right, the transcript is finished to the best of my ability. Most of the juicy questions were already in NutiketAiel's report, but if people want the exact wording, and there's some other good stuff too, especially some fun less cosmere-related stuff. My favorite might have to be this tidbit from the Legion sequel: but anyway. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the answer to one of my questions. This is the first time I've heard the word Oathpact used in reference to the Radiants instead of the Heralds, and at first I thought he might've thought I'd been asking about the Heralds, but I did say both Raidants and Recreance and then he said Shardblades and not Honorblades so I think we were on the same page... so is Oathpact the proper name for the Radiants' oaths as well as for whatever the Heralds had, or is this something else?

Something interesting that I think is new--it sounded like Brandon used a longer name for Nazh, it sounded like "Nazreloft". Has this shown up before and do we have a correct spelling for it? It is at about 2:36:40 in the audio.

I was the one who asked the question about Nohadon being a bondsmith. I also asked a bit about the in-world Way of Kings and when I said "It was written over 4500 years ago, right?" he answered that it was written by Nohadon and gave a rather sneaky look. I hadn't even considered the idea that Nohadon might still be alive, but this could support that idea (or the idea that Nohadon is a title that's passed down). What made me wonder about if he was a bondsmith was, we know that surgebinding and the Nahel bond at one point did not require the Oaths, and we know that the Oaths are at least assumed to come from Nohadon's writings. But spren requiring the oaths to form the Nahel bond doesn't seem like something they just decided to do, it seems like it's a magical requirement. So something or someone actually changed the nature of the Nahel bond. And Dalinar as a bondsmith is bonded to the Stormfather who seems to have at least some measure of authority over what bonds lesser spren make, and well, bondsmith is right there in the name, so I thought, maybe bondsmiths can actually change how the Nahel bond works. But I knew Brandon would never answer that so I thought asking if Nohadon was a bondsmith might get me some support for this theory in a roundabout way.

I believe that was someone else's addition, I know that someone else contributed to the transcription before I got back to it today (thank you, whoever you are!) I probably should have just copied your transcription for your questions, it's more exact than mine ... Who was it who asked if Nohadon was still alive? Is that a 17S member?

I have started transcribing from the individual Q&A audio, I have gotten through the first half hour. Here is the transcription so far if anyone would like to read it or add to it, otherwise I will be continuing it tomorrow. (I have not done transcriptions before, please tell me if I should be doing the formatting differently. I am only transcribing the actual questions and answers, not extraneous dialogue, and while I'm trying to get it roughly word-for-word I felt it's unnecessary to record every "um" and "ah," etc. Each timestamp marks a new asker, and I've identified the askers when I can.)

Mini-Theory : The Desolations are a world-hopping event
EHyde replied to Tempus's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This doesn't rule out Desolations being world-hopping events, but for what it's worth, Brandon said at the signing last night that there were no Desolations before there were humans on Roshar.- 16 replies

I went through the line twice and was able to ask all the questions I had planned on asking (except for one that I didn't remember until the drive home, but it was a somewhat silly question so no real loss). These are all paraphrased--since two different people were taking records (thank you NutiketAiel and Leiyan!) I didn't focus on trying to remember his answers word-for-word. Q. What plants and animals are used for fabric on Roshar, since they don't really have wooly animals there? A. Most are plant-based. "Silk" is actually a plant called sea silk that grows in the ocean, some rockbuds have a fibrous interior. I commented that I had expected silk to be more common there, since it comes from insect cocoons, but he said that insects on Roshar don't have fibrous cocoons but chrysalises comprised of stone and something that would dissolve in water. Q. The letters in the Steel Alphabet look like they're made of visual symbols of each of the three magic systems (cuffs, beads, spikes), was this intentional? A. Yes. They were deliberately made that way, altered from the older Terris alphabet. Q. The dye in Hallandren, the Tears of Edgli--does the flower come in different colors, or is it something about the dye process that creates multiple different colors? A. The flower comes in different colors. Q. Does it dye different fiber types the same color? A. No, it dyes different fiber types different colors. Q. Theoretically, would it work on synthetic fabric? A. I'm gonna say yes. Q. Is it more fuel-efficient for Awakening than other sources of color? A. Yes, it is excellent for Awakening. Q. Any chance of seeing a Nightblood POV? A. Yes, it is something that he's considered. Q. Were there Desolations before there were humans on Roshar? A. No. Q. How were the Radiants able to summon their Shardblades (at the Recreance) if they'd already decided to break their oaths? A. Something about how once you've bonded a spren that way, being able to use a shardblade isn't dependant on the Oaths. (I really need to go back and listen to this one, I don't remember his answer very clearly) Q. Was Nohadon a Bondsmith? A. RAFO (and he said it was a good question. I'm excited ) Q. What information do Stormwardens use to predict Highstorms? A. Lots of information, some of which isn't actually necessary. The dates of previous Highstorms are important, and if they know when the last storm left the other side of the continent that's very useful (he listed more things that I don't remember). Q. At the Recreance, were the Radiants deliberately trying to put Shardblades in the hands of non-Radiants? Since they left them all right outside a military base? A. RAFO, he doesn't want to tell us everything before we read the books. Q. The in-world Way of Kings is over 4500 years old, right? A. It was written by Nohadon (sneaky look) Q. Jasnah pointed out that so much information about the Radiants was lost or corrupted, are we going to find out why tWoK is still around and intact? Is it in fact intact? A. I will say that it's something where the original text is lost and all that survives is a translation. Q. ... which may or may not be accurate? A. Yes. Brandon was super awesome for staying late and answering everyone's questions and the bookstore was super awesome too (seriously, if I was local, they would be getting all my business after this). Apparently, this was their first fantasy author event. I believe Leiyan will be uploading her audio later today.

Oh no! Unfortunately, we're on the road already, so I can't print anything, but if someone else can do that I can help with handing them out. Edit-there is a Staples very close to the bookstore and their website has a way to upload documents to be printed; if you can make the arrangements for the cards to be printed at the correct store, I could pick them up there (and pay for the printing). I don't know if they do it on such short notice though.
-
The bookstore has a cafe, so let's just plan on meeting there--that seems like the most convenient option. I'll be arriving as early as 3 or 4 and should be in that general vicinity most of the afternoon. edit, I'll be the girl with kinda blue-ish hair wearing a "Roshar is Gorges" tshirt

I still haven't finished mine, but thechronicferuchemist finished her version! I'm doing mine more like a beanie, but she did it as a beret and I think it turned out really cool.

Would anyone be interested in meeting up for coffee or dinner in the afternoon/evening before the signing? Leiyan and I will be getting in to town a few hours before the event starts and we'd love to meet up with other Sharders.

Fullmetal Alchemist and Stormlight Archive

... sentient shardplate? Alphonse was always my favorite. I'm only familiar with the manga/brotherhood, so I can't compare it to the first anime, but overall I was very happy with how FMA ended. -
Physical Colour is not the Fuel for Awakening *Mild WoR Spoilers*
EHyde replied to Aonar's topic in Warbreaker
Do we have confirmation that ToE-dyed fabrics are better fuel for Awakening? I was actually going to ask Brandon about this in the context of asking him about fiber arts in his worldbuilding in general (which I'm genuinely curious about) but if it's already been answered I'll skip that question.- 56 replies

Sorry to hear it :-( I've confirmed I will be going, and I'd definitely be interested in meeting up with other 17thSharders.
-
I think we have to not only ask why the Radiants broke their oaths/killed their spren, but also why they deliberately put Shardblades in the hands of non-Radiants. As with Kaladin, they shouldn't have had to summon their blades to kill their spren, but even if they did, they could have easily chosen to leave the blades somewhere other than at the front door of a military base. Is it possible that giving Shardblades to non-Radiants was the whole point?
-
Hmm, there needs to be a "walk into a bar" in there somewhere XD

I will definitely post a picture when it's done! I have not done any Sanderson knitting before this, though I've seen a few other people do so -- someone made a scarf with the allomantic symbols and someone else did a couple of glyphs from WoK as a cabling pattern, which looked really cool.
-
(yes, the thread title is a pun) After reading WoR, I decided to take Shallan's new chapter symbol (Pattern) and chart it into a knitting pattern, because I like doing fandom-inspired knitting projects and because a circular symbol with six-sided rotational symmetry is just asking to be put on a hat (and then I'll be a symbolhead!). (this repeats six times, knit in the round, like pieces of a pie -- the point at the top is the center of the symbol) I am in the process of test-knitting this now, I'm hoping to have it finished before I go to Brandon's signing on the 21st.

I think I'd prefer animated over live-action too, but as far as fan casting goes, I've been rewatching BSG recently and I can't help but picture Dalinar as Edward James Olmos (though he's probably too old for the role, by now)
-
Were there even Surgebinders at the time of the earliest desolations, though? We know from Dalinar's vision that Surgebinders were created by spren "wishing to imitate what [the Almighty] had given men" and that the Almighty was surprised by their appearance. No timeframe was given but it seems to me that there would have had to be at least some Desolations before the Radiants were formed. That makes sense with the quote from Taravangian's diagram, "The Ancient of Stones must finally begin to crack It is a wonder that upon his will rested the prosperity and peace of a world for over four millennia"
-
This is pretty out there but I thought I'd at least bring it up -- is it possible that the recreance was actually initiated by the spren? That instead of a mass murder it was more of a suicide pact?
