"Do what my actions would have made you do anyway"

I don't think actual writing is involved. Remember that it wasn't enough to just write down a random measurement to "lock" the Spren in Geranid's Interlude. She actually had to write down one of its specific characteristic (in this case an actual measurement) to do so. Extrapolating from that, it wouldn't be enough to just write "[Word]spren belongs to Odium". He would have to somehow "measure" the characteristics a Spren would possess that would make it inclined to follow Odium and then write those down. . I do not think a Shard would have to write anything, though. Odium's mere influence or touch would probably be enough to corrupt a Spren.

The nature of Adonalsium (spoilers for Mistborn and Stormlight)

He probably is, but the quote affirming Honourspren to be Splinters was referring to Syl's type in particular.- 52 replies

I think it is quite clear that the Spren in question is not of Syl's type. He would certainly have recognized anything resembling a Windspren. Neither does his description match "Wyndlespren" nor Cryptics. Probably not "Jasnahspren" either, but we can't know that for sure yet. . We cannot be 100% that Ym wouldn't be an Edgedancer, as we only see him use the Growth surge, but it seems likely that he would be the of other Order with access to the Growth surge, as it seems like he can use it fairly easily, while Lift had to reach "the next level" before she could use it to heal. No we are likely dealing with the Fifth Order here. . . Cryptics are an oddity, given that they seem to come in groups, but ignoring Elokhar (as we don't know what surges he can access), we have five different Spren for five different Orders. While your hypothesis might still prove to be correct, I fail to see the evidence for it, other than of the "we've never seen a blue Swan, but that doesn't mean there are none" inclination. EDIT: Fixed spoiler-tags

My bad. Thank you for providing an answer to the correct question.

I'm not sure a ball would be able to "hit things" on its own. It would be fun to make it try to avoid other players, though: "roll away from people".

The nature of Adonalsium (spoilers for Mistborn and Stormlight)
Aether replied to scottos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Thank you. I spent about 45 minutes looking for that quote. I see now that searching for "sentience" instead of "self-awareness" might have somewhat hampered the search. I find it interesting what you say about their presence in the Physical Realm. Theoretically, a Splinter could then attain independent self-awareness (sentience), but only in the Cognitive Realm? Wyndle seem to have been fine on his own in the Cognitive Realm, but is apparently dependent upon his bond with Lift in the Physical one. But then again, we're not sure if Wyndle qualifies as a full Splinter or not.- 52 replies

Wyndle and Shallan's Cryptics most definitely do not display the same characteristics as Sylphrena. That isn't to say that they aren't all "of the Honour Shard" or something, but that they are quite clearly different types of Spren. They might all be honourspren, but when I'm referring to "Honourspren", with a capital "H", I'm referring to a Sylphrena-type Spren in particular. And those distinctly different types of Spren are specific to separate each Order. At least that is what the evidence suggests. EDIT: I am not sure if you were arguing with me or not, but you seemed to reject my hypothesis without actually having understood what I meant, so I've tried to clear it up a bit in this post.

Vin was forced to burn Aluminum when captured by the Inquisitors in the Final Empire, if that's what you mean. It's one of the 16 Allomantic metals, and can be burned, but it cannot be pushed or pulled and can be used to make "tin-foil" hats. . I do not think Vin or anyone could have had met any Aluminum to push at in the first place, given that it is extremely rare / expensive to produce. . Maybe, but Brandon called Aluminum by it's real-world equivalent in Mistborn-trilogy. I do not see why he would rename it just for Sel. . EDIT: I remember that the melting point of Ralkalest was referred to specifically. I cannot remember if it was said to be high or low (but that it likely would have killed Shai in her cell), but if we can find the quote we might be able to determine whether or not Ralkalest is actually Aluminum. The latter melts at 660.32 °C (1220.58 °F). By comparison, Iron melts at 1538 °C (2800 °F) and Tin at 231.93 °C (449.47 °F). If the text indicates that it is either especially low or high - such as the Iron or Tin - then it is likely not Aluminum.

I get that, and I'm somewhat behind the ones suggesting that all of the Nahel Spren are Splinters of both Honour and Cultivation, but of different amounts. Honourspren à la Syl would probably be close to 100% Honour, and perhaps "Wyndlespren" 100% Cultivation, but another one could be for example 15% Honour and 85% Cultivation. . As of now, we have information that there are at least four different kinds of Spren that bonds with people displaying four different Radiant power-sets. These are Kaladin's Honourspren, Shallan's and quite possibly Elokhar's "Cryptics", Lift's "Wyndlespren" and Ym's "whatever-spren". Also, given . I personally believe that whatever the case is, there are specific types of bonding-Spren for each Order, with what I see define as "Cryptics" and "Honourspren" being the particular Spren for the Lightweavers and Windrunners respectively. . EDIT: Accidentally used the "quote" function instead of spoiler-tags.

I feel with you, Alaxel, especially since I've been going around thinking about Windrunner dodge-ball for most of the day. I SO want someone to make an animé about it or something. Or maybe just lurk in on the next Windrunner dodge-ball chat.

I do not think he meant for you to post the whole thing again, just the new questions. I'd recommend you to at least remove the questions that have already been answered, as it is difficult and annoying to read the whole thing just to help you with the few remaining questions.

I seem to have been a bit trigger-happy on that one, as I cannot find the supposed WoB that I'm referring to. I now believe myself wrong on this point. My apologies. My other point remains standing though. I do not think Ralkast have to be the body of a Shard to be unforgeable.

In the same way that Honourspren are Windrunner specific. The definitions of both of these terms are fluent, but from what I understand, there are specific types of Spren that would be classified as archetypical Honourspren/Cryptics. These would be specific to their respective Orders, I believe.

The nature of Adonalsium (spoilers for Mistborn and Stormlight)
Aether replied to scottos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I seem to remember a WoB where he says that "Splinters are what some people in the Cosmere call small, detached pieces of a Shard that have attained sentience on their own", or something to that effect. I have unfortunately not been able to relocate this. It should be noted though, that even if I remember the quote more or less correctly, he phrased it as how someone in universe would define the term Splinter, so it doesn't really give us any good indication of its true nature. . Anyway, I think you are on to something, for in the case of both Seons and the Returned, the Splinter seems to be distinct the sentience it is a part of. They might be what which permits something inanimate to gain sentience, but is not sentient in-and-of itself: . Honourspren, on the other hand, are sentient and are also a Splinter in-and-of themselves: It should however be noted that Sylphrena only had nominal sentience (if she could have been called sentient at all) and acted more like a Windspren - which doesn't seem to be sentient at all - before she bonded with Kaladin. And the stronger this bond became, the more intelligent she seemed to grow - all the while regaining lost memories. . From this body of evidence, it seems that Splinters needs to latch on to something else in order to either grant sentience or gain it for themselves.- 52 replies

It should also be noted that Elokhar apparently sees Cryptics, which would place him in the same Order as Shallan, with a female Herald at its head. With the female Stoneward, the male whatever-the-hech-Ym-is I think we can safely assume that the Orders aren't gender limited, and likely not even predominately filled by either sex.

I am not sure it needs to be a Shard's body at all. Aluminum is allomantically inert. You can't push and pull on it, and it can shield you from emotional Allomancy. Yet, it is still a normal metal, completely separate from any Shard. (And yes, I know that it can be burned, but that is somewhat besides the point.) My point is, I do not think Ralkast needs to be directly connected to a Shard at all. Also, the Dor seems to have been created by a cooperative effort by both Shards (as it existed before the shattering of Devotion and Dominuim), so it definitely isn't UnForgeable because it is the body of the other Shard.

The Way of Kings audio-book passed the 40 hour mark, and the Words of Radiance is even longer. Think you can cram 40+ hours into three days?

Welcome to the forum! And rest assured, you are not the only one with plenty of love for Brandon.

Shadesmar is just another name for the Cognitive Realm. I think you meant to say "the Cognitive and the Spiritual Realms" Also, it is generally better to edit your own posts than to double- or triple-post.

It is also possible that the First Ideal does is not as essential as the following ones, or at least that you don't have to voice them or embrace them at a pivotal point in your life. Kaladin didn't seem to change much when he learned about them, and he'd attracted Syl long before that.

I got the impression from the Emperor's Soul that the material itself didn't matter. Soulstone is only the preferred material because of how easy it is to carve it and that it doesn't chip after being heated up. I don't think an Lerasium Essence Mark would work any different from a normal one. On the other hand, you might be able to use it to make your Spirit Web more flexible or something, making it easier to forge Soulstamps for yourself.

Always cool to see lurkers step up. Keep on the good work, newbie! =P

You've got a good a good point. I hadn't thought of that. EDIT: Woah! That edit does make all the difference. Because if they really feel like another version of themselves, then they'd probably be able to find out how they could have become that way. Now, if an Augur would be able to learn to control what they see...!!! My only problem with it is that it still looks rather useless in and of itself. It would do wonders for rapidly training Forgers, but I'm not sure how it could be useful with Allomancy alone.

It might help, but it doesn't really tell you how you would have turned out differently. If anything, it only shows what could plausibly have happened, but that can be done logically as well. Plus, the alternative version of you that you see wouldn't necessarily be one for which you'd like to forge an essence mark.
