  1. Kredik Shaw. It literally translates to Hill of a Thousand Spires.
  2. I used to really not like Szeth, but now that I've struggled a little more to get into his head, I feel really sad for him. I'm excited for his book. Eshonai sounds cool. I was very intrigued by the Parshendi culture, so it'd be great to learn more about the Listeners. Heck, we could even have her flashback to when she first meets Dalinar, the night of Gavilar's assassination, and the events leading up to it. Intrigue! The plot thickens! Dalinar? Yes please. I'd really love to see the Blackthorn, just to compare him to Dalinar the Radiant. Also, no love for Renarin? I actually have the exact opposite opinion on their backstory, maxal. Renarin sounds way more interesting to me than Adolin, considering we know so little about him.
  3. Sell. He'll be crazy until the time he is killed. Presumably by Nalan.
  4. I'd say that the Awakened Warrior thing has a lot of strength and is very good at swordfighting. I do have some ideas. Warbreaker spoilers follow.
  5. This. When Shallan describes her ideal life to Hoid, one of the things she mentions is that her mother is alive and that she loves her. Shallan's mother didn't have to even be violent or abusive towards her. Even an emotionally distant parent can be devastating to a young child. Shallan has also lied to herself about multiple things in her past, including her killing her mother. I don't see why her ideal childhood before her mother's death couldn't be any different.
  6. I feel like Sadeas dying and Adolin killing him were things that needed to happen, mainly for storytelling purposes. Sadeas is no longer the main villain of any of the story arcs, and he's in a completely different weightclass compared to even Eshonai and the Stormform Parshendi. If he were around any longer, he would detract from the story line and frustrate readers to no end (I was already annoyed by him in this book; I definitely didn't want him around any more). Likewise, Adolin needed to kill him, because he's made no serious mistakes so far, as opposed to most other characters. This choice will send his character in a completely different direction, and I'm really excited for it. So killing Sadeas and having Adolin hold the knife was the right thing for the story. But was it the right thing for Adolin? I don't think so. I've already expressed my opinion in other posts, but I'll elaborate on my position here. Adolin is a nice guy. He doesn't like fighting in war and he prefers dueling, which is non-lethal. Sure, he can be a brat sometimes, but other than that, very charming. Which is why him killing Sadeas came completely out of the blue for me (I'm very awful at foreshadowing until after the foreshadowed event has already occurred). My first thought when Adolin did it: This is wrong. Why? Because even though he's impulsive, even though he's got anger issues, even though Sadeas has basically made him and his family suffer, I don't believe it's something Adolin would do if he were in a clear state of mind. "But he is in a clear state of mind," you say. I argue that Adolin is injured, exhausted, and angry from the recent battle. He's been bested again by Szeth. His father nearly died. Kaladin and Shallan have both turned out to be Radiants. His horse got shot. He's obviously emotionally unstable. Furthermore, when Sadeas reveals his plan to basically diss Dalinar, Adolin just loses it. He practically goes crazy and knifes Sadeas before realizing what he just did. Adolin has resisted the urge to kill Sadeas before in a calmer setting. He doesn't now, and that just screams "BAD!" to me. Basically, my argument boils down to: Adolin is not in a clear state of mind, and he did something he would not do if he was in a clear state of mind. That's why it was wrong for him personally to do so. Don't get me wrong: now I think it's awesome that he did it, and I'm glad Sadeas is gone. I just don't think it was the right thing for Adolin to do. If Jasnah had done it, I'd have no qualms. If Sadeas were executed by Dalinar for treason and willful rebellion against the throne, I wouldn't have batted an eye. But the fact that Adolin does this in such a brutal way convinces me that it was the wrong thing for him to do. Now we just have to see how it goes!
  7. I think I found mine in the Description section of a Chrono Cross OST video. Besides, I'm butt lazy, and coming up with witty phrases is too much work, so I just gave that job to you. Handy, huh?
  8. I really, really, really want David to be an unknown. I can't think of anyone who would be good for him and be an actor that I know about, so yeah. I support the Emma Stone/Jennifer Lawrence vote. Leaning more towards Jennifer Lawrence because she looks younger to me and I feel she's sympathetic yet cold at the same time. Liam Neeson as Prof? Sure, why the heck not? Prof's old, right? He's insanely awesome, right? I support this motion, hands down. I really like Tom Hardy as Abraham. Now that I think of it, that's who I pictured Abraham as. I'm fairly sure that he could pull off the French accent (after all, he managed to be intelligible when wearing that awful Bane mask, so I have high hopes). Gina Torres is perfect. No other comment except yes. I've always imagined Nightwielder as very young. May I present for you Byung-hun Lee? He did a very good job in RED 2, and I feel like he's still comfortably in the early twenties to early thirties range. Plus, he's the perfect amount of menacing. As for Steelheart, I say either Henry Cavill (Superman), Christian Bale, or Chris Hemsworth. Extra-irony bonus round: Chris Evans (though he doesn't have the black hair, I think he's close to having the bod).
  9. We have a winner!
  10. Sign me up for EVERYTHING! Also, can Kelsier teach a class on how to best kill nobles? Kaladin can guest lecture for a special lecture on how to kill Shardbearers.
  11. Man, oh man. I'm really not good at this. I wanted to change, so I did.
  12. Mraize wasn't really a grabber for me. He was cool, but I found him rather uninteresting. At first Renarin was uninteresting for me, but then I really spent my time hunting after his sections after I'd seen what a huge fanbase he has, and I have to admit, I like him a lot more now. But other than those two, I've liked almost everyone. Yes, I even liked both Kaladin and Shallan at the same time. Gasp!
  13. I love exercising. I find it to be more of a preventative rather than a cure, but it certainly helps. Other than that, I find that distraction really works well. It breaks the thought cycle and I can actually get on with my life. Movies, video games (it can be very cathartic to beat up fifty mooks), anime, manga, the works.
  14. Dang it. If she ever does another piece of artwork, please post it on here! She has a very wonderful art style.
  15. That's one awesome Kaladin! I always imagined him looking more like Christian Bale, but your Kaladin has this perfect amount of both grief and anger in his face. Plus, dat lighting... In short, masterfully done. Have my upvote.
  16. Chrono

    Kaladin & Syl

    Well now. Syl's just gorgeous!
  17. Chrono

    Mist...

This is really sad, yet beautiful.
  18. Elhokar. No, no, no. The Patriarch from Elantris. Seinalen? I can't spell his name.
  19. You can ship them as friends, I think. There's some magical Homestuck pattern that dictates the multiple types of shipping. I would summon FeatherWriter, but I can't really do that unless someone mentions Renarin.
  20. Oh goodness, I don't know. Shai sounds awesome: I'd love to see her interactions with Pattern, Shallan, and Jasnah. Heck, Pattern would probably fangirl over Forgery like no one else could, because of all the delicious lies.
  21. 14) Give my regards to Preservation 15) He always did his best to win Rhymes with my Vin line, so that's why I posted two.
  22. Jakamav is of Roion's house. As for the whole houses thing, I'm ultimately more concerned about Ialai. That woman has her fingers in everything. She managed to make duelists (by her admission, a wild and unpredictable sort) of all houses and camps refused to fight Adolin based solely on rumor and bribery. Ialai is very good at manipulating people. That's why Sadeas uses her the way he does (or did, rather, considering he's rather dead). She's pretty much an anti-Navani, if you think about it. Ruthar was a strong supporter of Sadeas, and he's a very powerful highprince. I can totally see Ialai using this to her advantage. The other Highprinces are pretty much swing states. One problem is that Dalinar and Navani are understandably distracted with Urithiru and exploring it. When Sadeas's murder shows up, they'll be completely off guard while Ialai's probably had a while to plan out a suitable attack reference. However, I feel that this problem will eventually go away when Voidbringers start appearing in massive numbers, so it all might blow over.
  23. So basically, we're pretty much on the same page. Always nice to know. Well argued, and good afternoon to you as well.
  24. Thanks for responding! You make awesome points, and I agree with you that a lot of people when they see a character never fail instantly scream "Mary Sue!" My post was intended to show that this is not so with Shallan. You make very good arguments at portraying the other side. I figure a response is in order, just for the sake of defending my points. Address and rip apart as needed.
  25. To the best of my knowledge, everyone that doesn't like Shallan seems to think that she is pretty much a Mary Sue: she's perfect at everything she does, everything goes right for her, nothing bad happens, she doesn't fail at anything, characters instantly adore her. Based on those criteria alone, Shallan is most definitely not a Mary Sue. 1. She's perfect at everything she does. Oh no, she most certainly is not. Similar to Kaladin, she can't even use one of her Surges effectively, and the other she can use with great skill, but only in a few areas (she can't make sounds, and she is restricted to drawing out almost all of her illusions, even a stone wall). One may argue that when she shipwrecked, she suddenly gained confidence, leadership abilities, etc. I argue that in every circumstance where she is in a position of leadership, she's basically imitating Jasnah. Her mannerisms, word choice, and even her thoughts mimic hers. There's even a scene where she specifically says she puts on her Jasnah face. And guess what? It doesn't work all the time. Tyn sees through it (she is a con woman, but she's trained to see past fronts like hers), and Vathah barely follows her orders for a good while. 2. Everything goes right for her/nothing bad happens. Again, no. One only needs to look at her backstory to see that her life has not been blossoms and cake. As for the first one, a lot of people point to Shallan being able to perform all of the missions of the Ghostbloods with no problems. Almost every mission, she's either nearly blown her cover or screwed up in some massive way and barely been able to save her hide. The only situation which she pulls off flawlessly is gaining Adolin's attraction, in my opinion. 3. She doesn't fail at anything. Shallan fails at a lot of things. She failed Soulcasting in a moment of dire need. She failed to become Jasnah's ward not once, but twice. However, she barely manages to scrape by more than she fails, which I admit can bother me sometimes. However, it certainly is not effortless or easy for her. And while she's succeeded in a lot of things, I believe she's failed in her most important goal: to find a healthy coping mechanism for her past. Even at the end of WoR, she hasn't managed to fully accept blame or responsibility for her actions: she blames Pattern for destroying her family and hates him. 4. Everyone instantly adores her. Kaladin hates her right off the bat (mainly because she's lighteyed, but that's his personal stigma), Jasnah seems to find her a waste of time at the beginning of WoK, and Vathah treats her like crap before he trusts her. Most characters who like her do so after they've known her for an extended period of time, except for Adolin, who likes her the second he sees her. Of course, most of these points can be contended. However, I find that Shallan is most definitely not a Mary Sue. Sure, I'd have liked it if she failed a little more, but she's certainly not a bad character.
