  1. Personally I think the Codes have to go out the window for now. The codes were put into place during old Alethkar when the Alethi were a well ordered nation. The problem is that trying to enforce the codes in modern Alethkar would be like trying to build a house on faulty foundations. They won't follow the codes because they don't see any reason to follow the codes. That's why I think Dalinar is going to have to give them a reason. After a generation or so they should be able to go back to the following the codes without being forced. But until the Alethi learn to be a nation in more than name, the codes will not be worth more than the paper on which they are written. The thing is that I'm sure there are very good reasons for following the codes. I really liked the theory that they protect you from the worst parts of the Thrill. Unfortunately I really don't see another way of getting the Alethi to truly start following the codes again, short of divine intervention.
  2. That's definitely possible, but there is still the problem that we just don't have enough evidence yet. The theory applies equally well to most point of view characters right now, so Kaladin or Hoid would make almost as much sense as Dalinar. But like I said I got a very similar vibe. I felt that Dalinar would gather the pieces of Honor and in so doing become Honor, then Kaladin would be his first new Herald and champion against Odium.
  3. That has occurred to me before as well. I just don't think there is any evidence to say for sure that is where the story is going. It would be interesting if Odium is defeated in the first 5 books, leaving the last 5 to chronicle a new Shards attempts to take up all of the remaining Shards in the Cosmere.
  4. Quiver I think what you are remembering about the surges on the endpaper, is that the chart being filled out by the 17th shard was wrong. Some surges had been placed incorrectly and Brandon corrected them at one of the signings. I think it was due to a miscommunication at a previous signing. I've never been to one of those question and answer sessions, but I imagine they can be hectic and hard to hear properly. I'm just glad that people can go to ask questions, and that Brandon is nice enough to answer them.
  5. So you are saying that the Radiant's helm is like a one way mirror in combat, letting them see but not be seen. Then they turn it to glass when they want to be seen.
  6. If they have the same power set, why can't Kaladin match Szeth's basic lashings? I think they will be roughly equal in using surgebindings by the time Szeth shows up, which would mean that the one that has the most stormlight wins.
  7. The prospect of uncovering hidden clues is what makes this type of speculation fun for me. But it does remind me of that Rumsfeld quote about Known Unknowns, and Unknown Unknowns. Because it's a fictional world there are going to be a multitude of factors that are just going to be missing. BS and company might know them but felt they were too minor to mention, or they might not have ever crossed their minds. But even those minor missing factors have the potential to make the results so riddled with errors that they really don't do us any good. What I would find really amusing is if Brandon slips one of the missing variables found by these types of calculations into one of the other books. It might not do us any good, but it would be kind of an easter egg for us.
  8. With the dust jacket quote about widening cracks in the soul, I'm more convinced than ever that the shardblades are a piece of the KR's soul. I think the cognitive oaths widen the cracks until a shard of their soul can be pulled into the physical realm. I think the original blades were still attached to the KR that created it, and would therefore die with them. But during the recreance the KR's broke their oaths, which broke off that shard of their soul. This made the blades permanent but less than what they once were. I think further evidence is given in Adolin's section of the preview chapters in the way he interacts with his blade, even going as far as saying that the blade feels "like an extension of the soul". I swear Kaladin has said something similar about the spear, so I fully expect his shard to take the form of a spear.
  9. True, but I don't think any of Kaladin's weapons survived the fight and that shardbearer wasn't trying to kill him. Without a shard of his own Kaladin will have to stay out of melee range and use lashings to attack. But Szeth is pretty skilled with lashings as well, so I don't see that being terribly effective. But I suppose he could stay out of range until Szeth is out of stormlight, then lash him to the ground.
  10. I thought I saw something about what damaged what depended on the relative strengths of the investitures? If that is the case I see shardblades containing much more investiture than a surgebinder could hold, so the shardblade would cut through the surgebinder. But I'm also pretty sure that those with the growth surge could repair the damage with regrowth.
  11. Teft is suspicious of himself? That doesn't bode well.
  12. If that is the case, why would you ever make the helmet not transparent ? Because, unless I remember incorrectly the only times the helms disappear is when they want to talk. So if they can make the helmet 100% transparent, why don't they use that while fighting? Using anything else would seem to be limiting their vision during combat unnecessarily.
  13. I just noticed that the map scale doesn't have units. I wonder if that is a misprint or done on purpose to stop these types of calculations. Given the preference of the shards to make multiples of 10 I would probably assume it was supposed to be kilometers, but that is a big source for error.
  14. I just thought of a way Szeth might survive. We suspect that Kaladin is better able to hold onto stormlight, so what if he fights long enough to exhaust Szeth's suply? The only problem I see is the shardblade, it seems Kaladin would need something to stand up to a shard. I suppose he could borrow a blade, but what do you think the chances are that he will get his own blade before Szeth shows up?
  15. Moash and Kaladin both wanting revenge on Amaram would be an interesting twist. I'm really looking forward to finding out how Kaladin deals with Amaram, since it just doesn't seem like he is going to get the revenge he deserves.
  16. Couldn't you use the scale on the map of Alethkar to figure out the size of the continent?
  17. Amaram reminds me of the saying that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I want him to be held responsible for his betrayal, but I also want to know why he felt it necessary. I suppose there could be extenuating circumstances, but they would have to be doozies to make him even slightly less culpable.
  18. Where do we get 30 shards? Does it include the sets belonging to the king? Is it 30 total sets or a mix of plates and blades?
  19. Probably because that would let Kaladin and Renarin study the Gravity surge together.
  20. It was also Syl that told Kaladin that dropping from the bridge would be fine. That and Wyndle's behavior is what makes me think what we've seen is a little bit self taught but needing spren guidance for the big tricks.
  21. Elhokar really hasn't been a leader, which is part of why the kingdom is so weak. Elhokar was also paranoid that someone was trying to kill him and suspected Dalinar. The whole point of the attack was to show Elhokar that his suspicions were misplaced. I've only got the audiobook at the moment so I can't quote him, but I was pretty sure Dalinar plans on it being and Elhokar-lead Alethkar.
  22. I wonder if the different Thrill's are at all related to the Passions?
  23. I could see Jasnah going to the barracks to investigate the dark eyed solider that so quickly worked his way into her families inner circle.
  24. Why do you think that Dalinar wants to take over the kingdom? It seems to me that he wants his nephew to have the kingdom in more than just name. I think that the only thing keeping the kingdom together is that it hasn't been challenged yet, and if a serious power were to attack most highprinces would desert Elhokar.
  25. Wouldn't that depend on what Stormlight is? If it's pure investiture it might be possible to recharge the ships away from Roshar. Plus talking about a ships Gem Core just sounds cool.
