[OB] How good of condition is Odium in?
Salkara replied to Djarskublar's topic in Stormlight Archive
I agree that Cultivation will oppose Odium, but I don't think directly. Maybe she'll administer the coupe de grace, but I don't think she'll be duking it out in 12 rounds. I think, instead, the characters we see on screen are the weapons she is cultivating, and we won't realize the full extent until later. Like when Syl says I think she's saying that even though she's an honorspren, her bond with Kaladin was part of Cultivation's plans. -
[OB] The Third Theory: Stormlight restored Dalinar's memories
Salkara replied to DiamondMind's topic in Stormlight Archive
First, with Lift, there's the matter of perception. Lift doesn't view her ability to convert food into Stormlight as a curse. It may result in a chronic caloric definitely, but it's not something she perceives as needing to be healed. With Dalinar, it's a hole in himself that he feels should be filled. It's something he perceived as wrong with himself. Second, of course (I'm going to claim "of course" even though I'm only prescient when I have the benefit of hindsight) it's reversible. As a genre, fantasy is filled with god-like creatures who grant irreversible wishes to humans who find that their poorly worded wish didn't turn out as expected. This is the type of trope we should be expecting too have flipped on us. Just like when Vin attacked TLR's malatium shadow and passed through it. One of the main reasons I love reading Brandon's books. -
[OB] Oathbringer Dust jacket and map!

See, I'm inclined to disagree. I think that's the type of phrase meant to be overlooked on a first read but recognized as clever foreshadowing after everything is finished. Similar to -
[OB] How good of condition is Odium in?
Salkara replied to Djarskublar's topic in Stormlight Archive
Agreed, but I'd caution that Cultivation is less direct than indirect. Take the example of the teacher. The teacher prepared the student to the succeed in {x} endeavour. The teacher isn't succeeding in {x}, the student is. Most likely, I'd say that Cultivation is cultivating the Rosharan species to take on Odium rather than getting ready to go toe to toe in the octagon with Rayse herself. I don't see Brandon introducing all these wonderfully complex characters just so Cultivation can go deus ex machina at the end. Except for Cultivation helped Honor against Odium and she was pretty darn close to Honor when he was shattered. -
[OB] Oathbringer Dust jacket and map!
Salkara replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Stormlight Archive
Urithiru was built at the place closest to Honor... but the Nightwatcher is of Cultivation, right? How does that work? -
Is Urithiru considered one of the Dawncities? I was always under the impression that the Dawncities predated Urithiru. Like they were built into the design of Roshar by Adonalsium, and Urithiru was built after (or concurrent to) the founding of the Knights Radiant.

If you haven't read Malazan Book of the Fallen... please do. You won't be disappointed.

Don't forget about the 10th stanza of the Parshendi's Song of Spren:

Did you have a source on this? It sounds cool, and I'm always looking for something to get hyped about .

[OB] Dalinar and the archer - foreshadowing?
Salkara replied to aemetha's topic in Stormlight Archive
I agree that people don't want to believe their God is dead, which is why Dalinar needs something more than his word. The word of a guy who looks like Nale statues, gets called Nale by the Skybreakers, named as Nale by the Stormfather, who is loaded with ancient fabrial tech and knowledge, and who has an honorblade (and can probably do some pretty outrageous things with it), will probably go a long ways toward helping Dalinar. Some will probably think he's a fake, but there will also probably be quite a few who are convinced Nale is Nale.- 18 replies

I think that's in direct conflict with what the Stormfather said in OB ch. 16 (emphasis mine): The SF is saying that beating Odium's champion only buys humanity more time, nothing else.

[OB] Dalinar and the archer - foreshadowing?
Salkara replied to aemetha's topic in Stormlight Archive
I fail to see how the ardentia (or any Vorin peoples) outside of Urithiru matter in this scenario. Dalinar wants/needs more surgebinders. Making good with Nale (and Szeth) does this for him. Dalinar also can't have the people in Urithiru being opposed to him. If he pits his word against the ardentia, I think he risks fracturing his support. On the other hand, if one of the Heralds publicly agrees with Dalinar about the Almighty being dead, I think it adds a lot of weight to Dalinar's position.- 18 replies

[OB] Dalinar and the archer - foreshadowing?
Salkara replied to aemetha's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm not sure any of the Heralds actually will try to take over, but I agree, if they do, it probably won't last that long. Still, if Nale shows up with Szeth and says, "Yeah, this guy? He's with me," I think Dalinar will back down. I doubt there will be a question of identity. The Stormfather will probably confirm Nale is Nale, and the statues of Nale are good enough that Szeth recognized him. The broken oathpact will probably trouble Dalinar, but I don't think he'll challenge Nale on that. I mean, Dalinar's best course of action in that scenario is to make good with Nale. In doing so, Dalinar's KR orders have their ranks bolstered with members of the one order which did not disband, and Dalinar gains a possibly significant ally against the ardentia. People might shake their heads when Dalinar says the Almighty is dead and wonder what crazy thing he'll say next, but if/when one of the Heralds says the Almighty is dead... I think that would lend a lot of weight to what Dalinar is saying.- 18 replies

[OB] Dalinar and the archer - foreshadowing?
Salkara replied to aemetha's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'd be surprised if the Stormfather doesn't name Nale as a Herald. Aside from that, there are the statues of the Heralds in Urithiru (which is how Szeth recognized Nale). Then it just comes down to who people side with. Based upon things Kadash has said, I think the ardents will follow a Herald over a spren. Aside from the protagonists, I think a lot of the Vorin people in Urithiru will make the same choice, even if they like Dalinar. To most of them, the Heralds are holy, and the Stormfather is something else. What will be interesting is if/when Nale confirms the Almighty's death.- 18 replies

[OB] Dalinar and the archer - foreshadowing?
Salkara replied to aemetha's topic in Stormlight Archive
I actually don't think there will be an issue there unless something changes. If Szeth shows up with Nale, I don't think Dalinar will be able to do much. He may not be happy with it, but a Herald will outrank Urithiru's new "highking" by huge degree.- 18 replies

There have been hints that it's more than that. Most recently, we got this in ch. 16: The last 3 sentences seem to indicate it can do quite a bit more than just grant the ability to surgebind with Gravitation and Adhesion.

Dragonsteel chapter(s)

I don't believe so. My understanding is the BYU copies are only available because Brandon submitted Dragonsteel Prime as part of his master's thesis. -
[OB] Crazy Twist That Probably Won't Happen
Salkara replied to Salkara's topic in Stormlight Archive
Okay, so I was procrastinating from making my daughters' lunches last night, and I decided to see if I could group and order the Diagram epigraphs to see if they'd make more sense. One of them may actually lend some credence to at least a small part of this crazy theory. The Diagram's "Book of the 2nd Desk Drawer" has three paragraphs in the epigraphs: ¶14 is about how the Unmade aren't worth Mr. T's time but that he can't help thinking of them. It also states most Unmade are mindless, but some can think. ¶15 is about how Mr. T will make use of Moelach and the death rattles. ¶27 is "One is almost certainly a traitor to the others." Now, I'd always assumed that ¶27 was in reference to our protagonists (e.g. "One of them may redeem us. And one of them will destroy us."), but taken in context of the other two paragraphs, it seems to say that one of the Unmade is a traitor. Is there any WoB about the loyalties of the Unmade? Could one of them hate the other eight? Maybe part of Odium hates himself? Could the Stormfather have latched onto one of the "mindless" Unmade in order to keep himself from passing on (similar to Kelsier and Ruin's prison)? I got ideas guys, and a lot of them are probably wrong! -
I think it's more likely that Odium is planned as the big bad for this series rather that the whole Cosmere, so having him be damaged makes it so humanity actually had a shot at winning. A fully-powered, undamaged Odium would require some sort of divine intervention, but I don't think this series is going to take a "humans were saved by a divine being" path. Rather, I think it's going to take a "find redemption in the hearts of men" path.

Well, they do know about it, but apparently the Shin Shamanate also know about it and have some ability to locate it (Spiritual Fortune anyone?). I'm holding out hope for a showdown between Dalinar & co, Mr. T, and the Shamanate.
-
I'm guessing it will be used, but it's going to have to be stolen and recovered first.
-
Actually, we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the quantity of memories regained: What memories blossomed in Dalinar's head? Just Evi's name and face, or did he remember more?
