  1. Just added a note to things to look for when I reread WoK.
  2. I guess I always just assumed she "burned" the mists not actually absorbed preservation.
  3. I am not sure I see the appeal here. I don't doubt Brandon could make it a great story but...
  4. Some very good points.
  5. I would not want one smaller than a square foot. You have to spread out the impact over a larger area or you will just punch a larger hole in your chest. The more surface area that absorbs the impact the batter IMO. As for 4 inches thick...I agree that is probably overkill but even at 1 inch thick that's a 40lb plate (I am assuming it's steel). That would wear on you if you are trying to move around quickly. As for the whole idea of pulling bullets to your chest...I think it's reckless and I imagine he has accumulated a very large bruise under that plate not to mention what happens when he faces a coinshot? I am Atmos on this. there has to be a better way. We need a lurcher with some finesse.
  6. So I am rereading the Mistborn trilogy after finishing tWoK I am trying to focus on the little things like Hoid, and I noticed that as the informant that Kelsier talks to he appears as a bald old man while as wit I recall he was young tall and had dark hair though I can't recall for sure. Can Hoid then alter his appearance like Vasher, and I assume all in the royal line as well as the returned, can in warbreaker?
  7. It would be possible to carry but a plate that is 4 inches thick assuming it is 12" square that would be ~150lbs. That would be extremely cumbersome.
  8. Are you suggesting that Vin could have been absorbing the mists when ever she did't have the earring in out in the mists?
  9. I actually did some free body diagrams and find that I am now in agreement on some points. Attached are my diagrams (don't judge, I used paint). I think I understand where you are coming from phantom. As seen in balance.jpg I can see that an equally applied force on two opposing objects would indeed cancel out regardless of the mass of the object. However, as demonstrated in unbalanced.jpg, if the if all objects being pushed do not have another object directly opposing it, you will be left with a resultant force on the pusher. So phantom, in response to your earlier argument (quoted below) that the only reason Wax would have to increase his weight on a ring push is to increase his push strength I still firmly disagree. I see no way that he could guarantee all objects in a ring would have directly opposing objects to cancel out the forces. On the contrary, assuming there is a stark imbalance in object placement around him and assuming a uniform force push on all objects, he could dramatically compound the resultant force on himself. This emphasizes the need to have more weight to more easily oppose the resultant forces. This does bring up an interesting question to me as well. can we assume that he can push with an equal force on all surrounding objects? I think this would be a difficult task. Especially when considering that his ability to push seems to decrease with objects further away from him. edit: added images to post body.
  10. What does that even mean? that gravity pulling you down makes you jerk upward?
  11. I think it is entirely relevant. Unless you are stating that its a magical effect that makes the this example different from a steel push jump.
  12. Where is the action/reaction when not jumping? I would like you to try it. Stand in the middle of the room and push off the ground. Then hold a coin above you and push off the ground and the coin at the same time. What happens?
  13. Multiple possible life paths? Pushing your conscience into the alternate time-line? edit: I was reading where Vin first used gold. It seemed like there was a latent effect on her, after the gold ran out, where she was struggling with the feelings of both her possible selves. This brings me to a few thoughts...I am starting a new thread.
  14. So how do mistborn use this same power to leap over houses and "fly"?
  15. That is a good argument. Though I do think there are ways to shield yourself while pushing.
  16. I think the train of thought here has been derailed. The point I am trying to make with the boxes is this...If you push on two objects, one significantly heavier or even immovable, as you have stated equal force would be applied to both. If one can't move the other has to do all the moving. To balance the forces on your body you will move to stay equal distances between the two objects. In other words a general ring push would throw you around unless you are much heavier than the objects you throw. This is why wax uses this technique.
  17. I agree they are boring in their current state but, it seems to me that Brandon leaves these things vague until he wants to show us something cool. He hasn't really revealed anything about smokers other than their importance to skaa mistings. I have a feeling we just haven't been given enough insight into the workings of a smoker to understand how interesting they can be. He has hinted already that he is going to do some cool stuff with Augers
  18. I don't know how it is intended, but I hope Brandon does something with copperclouds in the future to make them more interesting. Otherwise copper is just a really boring power to have. Essential but boring. either you have the power or you don't? no practice necessary? No skill required to be a 'good' smoker? Lame!
  19. Momentum is the product of mass and velocity. An increase in mass only adds to momentum of a moving object. zero velocity, zero momentum. This added weight increasing momentum is used by Wax. Increasing his weight and then pushing on the chandelier for example. He pushes of the balcony, increases his weight and therefore his momentum, then uses that momentum to push through the chandelier without significantly slowing himself. edit: I am assuming physical contact. What then? What's the difference?
  20. My inquiry was of genuine curiosity. I would like to know how that works. Do we know that it is fixed? I am having trouble recalling AoL since it has been a while since I read it. I can't recall anything in respect to a copper clouds size either, whether that is a reflection of allomantic strength or is it a common size among all?
  21. That pretty much sums it up. Though based on the idea of a Higgs field giving particles their mass, you could theoretically alter the mass of the particles in your body without increasing the density of particles. Though I suspect doing this would have some pretty strange side effects. edit: then again I guess by our definition of density being mass per unit volume, increasing the mass of the fundemental particles would still increase density. Just not particle density...
  22. Is that stated in AoL? There is a theory on FTL that suggests the bendalloy bubble size may be proportional to strength.
  23. this seems to support the idea that it is an increase in muscle mass. though I suspect that the density of everything is increased. you need stronger bones too. It would make sense to me that the entire density of the body would increase proportionally.
  24. So...Yes, you could crush yourself.
  25. So do we know that increase allomantic strength of bendalloy increases the bubble size? I thought it would compress time more. edit: Lets assume that more strength means bigger bubble. could a bendalloy twinborn compound enough to affect whole building, a city, or a continent? That could be an interesting defense mechanism.
