It's not necessarily a bad idea that the wind would be tied to Tanavast. In fact, you could be on to something. Stormlight is inhaled, it's not that hard to make the leap between wind and inhalation. Tanavast is mostly tied to the Stormfather, a storm is just spicy wind. Honourspren seem to like the wind, windspren make up the armour of a radiant bound to Honourspren. don't know if I want to support your idea but it's a logical conclusion to draw. However I don't believe Shards can "just" talk to people. Ruin required a spike, for instance and so does Harmony. If a Shard could just talk to Radiants of the 4th ideal, surely someone would have written it down? Might have to scan the WoR epigraphs or others. Shalash, Nale or Kelek would have mentioned it, no?

Do you all think bam is evil?
RefusesToElaborate replied to Acolyte of Radiance's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Was what she was doing deliberate? If yes, was she doing it out of loyalty to Odium orbwanting to see an end to the desolations? If ahe juat wanted to end the cycle of desolation, why evil? -
I believe his arc isn't going to a place that ends in death. I believe however, that he will probably not be an active front lines character in the back 5. Kaladin has become Roshars take on Sigmund Frued. Before you let your memory of Frueds sillier ideas get to you, let's admit his ideas weren't all bad. For instance, he invented the idea of "talk psychotherapy." As in, the idea of talking your anxieties and problems out with a professional who has no vested interest in lying to you about your problems. And I think Kaladin is going to take that method of therapy to the Heralds, Ishar will be his first subject. He's been a soldier for the past few books, I think in future he's going to go back to being a man of medicine. It's a strong theory of mine however, that Moash will kill Sylphrena, perhaps making this return to medicine much less of a choice for Kaladin.

Wins and truth spoiled in prolouge
RefusesToElaborate replied to Acolyte of Radiance's topic in Stormlight Archive
Brandon hid the ending to Mistborn in the first chapters of Final Empire. He has claimed go have hidden the ending to Stormlight somewhere in the first two books. A lot of people have claimed its: I think that this is wrong primarily because if (very soft "if") that theory is correct that wouldn't be the ending, that would be how the final desolation began. I think better candidates are: I have been looking, and I can't find it but I recall it being said by Sanderson that the tower will be a metric bajillion times more important in the back 5 as a source of light. In my mind, I believe this means something will happen to the Stormfather.- 4 replies

Friendo, looking at it with my Stoneward Chad stare, I think your evidences support my view of Dalinars visions. They're not accurate snapshots, they're authentic approximations of what the world was like during the desolations. That's why he can't interrogate the beings in his visions, because they're not a 1:1 recreation. And I'll ask, if the events at Feverstone happened, why does so much screen time get dedicated to the fact that Jasnah, top historian, can't place it on a map. Last thing she couldn't place on a map got found. Why not Feverstone? I think actually that would prove to me that Dalinars visions are 1:1 historically accurate, finding Feverstone and visiting it, I mean. Maybe finding evidence of Shards abandoned on the field. Maybe finding the bodies. The closest evidence I'd say is Odium saying he remembers these events, but... can he even witness Rosharan events while bound to Braize? We know that in HoA and TLM: If Odium truly remembers this, then the Radiants abandoned their Oaths during a desolation, which seems to be impossible as Kalak can see Radiants during the last desolation before he abandons the Oathpact. Either that, or Odium can see what other shards can't. Which to be frank, doesn't sit right with me. But thats beside the point, I was just trying to illustrate that there's a notable and concerning gap between how many shardblades there are and how many the Rosharan peoples can account for. Enough that you can't chalk it up to "I guess some are missing." I was trying to prove that there are enough missing that someone is hoarding them. I'm glad I did prove to you something was up with those Shin. I will say this, I don't believe any word an author uses slips in by accident. Especially when it comes to outline writing. I do believe there is a reason those Shin warriors kept their eyes down. I don't believe their owner demanded it. In real life there's a reason the Secret Service masks their eyes with sunglasses. So you can't tell where they're looking. I think those Shin were masking their eyes so you couldn't tell they carried Shards. Or better, so you can't tell which ones have bonded Shards.

Okay, so I think Dalinars visions probably lean on the side of exaggeration. I have a feeling they're not exact snapshots of history, but vaguely authentic representations of what life was like at the time. Kind of like a grand strategy game. Crusader Kings remains historically accurate till the moment you unpause the start date. From that point on you are not playing a simulation of real history, just realistic history. That's what I think Dalinars visions are vaguely analogous to. Which is why I kind of took Dalinar at his word that shardblades were exceedingly rare with only a few hundred in all of Roshar. What he saw at Feverstone Keep was something that probably didn't literally happen, but something that happened in small ways the world over. Honour just condensed it. I believed a person becoming Radiant and then proceeding to believe the oaths in their heart? I think that kind of person would be exceedingly rare to begin with. And besides, a Radiant who didn't break their bond wouldn't drop a blade when they died. The spren could just find a new Radiant. It makes sense then, that the upper limit on the number of Shardblades that can exist is identical to the number of Radiant spren that have lived. They seem to be vastly ournumbered by mankind. However, not all Spren want a bond. Some of them like the Inkspren thought it senseless to allow all of their number to make bonds. Then we get to RoW. Hundreds of Deadeyes come to witness Adolins trial. Despite the fact that they are being summoned at that instant. All the people the world over summoning and dismissing baldes and the blades having to walk back to Lasting Integrity. And there's still hundreds in attendance. Dalinar accounts for roughly 200 shardblades, to my memory. So now we ask, who do we know that would have Shard armed warriors but would never summom them? After all, there had to be a large enough group of warriors not summoning their blades to maintain that crowd. I believe that most, if not all Shin warriors are armed with Shardblades. Here are my evidences. 1. I'm a big brain Stoneward, my theories are correct and I need not provide evidence as it is beneath me. Excuse me while I go make Truthwatchers and Elsecallers exceedingly uncomfortable by driving with my windows down to make friendly conversation with fellow motorists, not wearing oversized hoodies to the gym and simultaneously making eye contact with every person in the room regardless of distance, direction and obstructions. 2. Shin warriors are not permitted to be traded outside of Shinovar. Despite being classless and thought of as little more than tools. Why would you care what happens to this thing, if it didn't carry something valuable? Something you didn't want your neighbours knowing you had. When Szeth is traded about he doesn't let his masters know he carries a Shard, I put it to you that this is not only to avoid violence, but to stop outsiders suspecting the Shin have countless blades. Szeth is probably a unique case here in that he is Truthless and as such possibly available for trade. You will note though that he wasn't traded for, the price that was paid was thrown away. As such Szeths owner did not trade him but freely gave him away. 3. Shin warriors met by Rysn, despite obviously being warriors marked by drab clothing, do not carry weapons. These warriors are owned by an exceedingly wealthy man, with clothing that scrapes grass despite him being atop a horse. If you can afford to get around dressed like that, you can pay to have your bodyguards carry a stick. The only reason they'd not have a stick is if they didn't need it. 4. Shin do have a specific taboo around touching weapons at all, however once you've touched one you are a warrior and you stay that way. It mirrors, in my eyes, the Alethi belief that touching a Shardblade makes you a Lighteyes of minimum 4th dahn. A belief so strong Amarams men handle Kaladins blade with towels. 5. This is just from a storytelling perspective. Imagine how bad it would be if an Unmade had corrupted the leadership of Shinovar, and then suddenly had access to lets say oh, about 300 Shardbearers? It would make a gut punch of a plot twist to see Shin warriors becoming MVP for team Odium out of nowhere.

Ladies, Gentlemen and all in between. I have had the best sleep of my life. My moustache is at the awkward length where i keep biting it accidentally so thats annoying, and I am waiting for a bus in the rain. I am now going to share my weird theory on dualism in The Stormlight Archive to make my commute feel shorter. Current mood. It's not secret that the Fantasy genre is run by nerds. Some people will call you a conspiracy theorist for that but we are big brain Stonewards and pretending not to notice things is far beneath us. The problem is nerds can't leave well enough alone. It can never be simple as "Wizard magic man do magic things" and guys like me saying "I like your funny words magic man, give me a sword" it's always gotta make sense. Problem with making magic make sense is that reprobates like me.... well, can you hear the pitter patter of Nike airs? That's the sound of my noggin' joggin'. The question thst remains is, where's it joggin'? Let's hope not off a cliff. I believe the description of the double eye of the Almighty is in reference to specifically what Tanavast sees, not anything to do with his eyes. And I believe the Shard of Honour is very specifically pleased by things coming in pairs and mirroring each other. Now you might say something like Honours number is 10. And you are correct. However it always sat as disturbingly noticeable that this is not 1 Arc of 10 books, it's two arcs of 5. 2x5 is 10, we know this. However I will advance this theory under the understanding that Honour is couched in the number 10 and I'm specifically trying to associate him with the number 2. Symmetry is holy under Vorinism. We see it in names, Keteks, dawncities and allegedly natural geographical formations. My theory comes forward under the understanding that we also see symmetry in characters. Being deliberately broad, Dalinar and Taravangian are both rulers who struggle with a brutalistic results based worldview and a desire to abandon this world view for a more compassionate one that protects life above all else. They are both heavily related to one specific shard of Adonalsium, elderly, deal with the baggage of their reputations, dote on their family and are trying to unite the world in face of the Desolation. Let it alsonbe noted that while Dalinar doesn't have a future sight, he does have a trusted retainer with future sight. There's a reason Dalinar and Taravangian get so close is what I'm saying. Kaladin and Szeth are both liberated slaves capable of extraordinary violence. As children, they were both of the upper ends of the low rank in their respective societies. They are both stripped of all rank, Szeth as Truthless and Kaladin as Sas Nahn which I believe means "without darkeyed rank." They both develop and work past a specific hatred of their overlords and were both punished for crimes in ways that were unearned. Kaladin for doing what he was told was the greatest ambition an Alethi darkeyed soldier could aspire to and Szeth for some kind of prediction that later became true. This is seeming suspicious in their similarities, is it not? Shallan and Lift are both thieves who ingratiate themselves to a stupidly powerful political figure. Shallan as Jasnahs ward and Lift as Gawx's friend and saviour. They both have some kind of weirdness involving Shadesmar. Shallan in binding two spren and Lift in constantly existing in a small way in the cognitive realm. Three examples I feel is enough for me to posit the idea that this is not inaccurate or accidental and alledge that Brandon Sanderson, a notorious advocate for planning fiction ahead via outlines, has probably some kind of repetitive theme going on with the series. Now I admit that if the point of the while series was symmetry there's probably better ways of doing it. I think if I were writing a series about symmetry sound waves would be a specific plot point. Namely echoes, because an echo is just a symmetry of a dead noise. I will say that Navanis plotline in RoW does call attention to inverting sound waves in a way that calls an echo to my mind. I'm on the bus now. Mood is now Slaughter Beach by clutch because thinking about Roshar got me feeling a little Crustaceanish. They should do vending machines on the bus. It'd be convenient and mad for state revenue. We have symmetry between Honor and Odium. 9 to 10, Unmade to Heralds, Radiants to... I don't remember what voidbinder factions are called, Passions to Oaths, Surgebinding to Voidbinding. Let's talk about dualism. Honour seems to enjoy separating things in a very binary, yes or no kind of way. And it makes sense. You broke your oath or you honoured it. There's no gray area. In his religion, you are either darkeyed or lighteyed and must behave accordingly. You are either male or female and must behave accordingly. And you separate all of society along these two axis, the only way to avoid it is to join the priesthood. I feel like I've made a convincing case for why we should probably consider that there is a pretty deliberate focus on two distinct and separate entities mirroring each other in many areas of Stormlight. That is why I believe that as we move on in time we will see warped mirrors of prior events. I believe these series will end how they started. Or rather, mirror their beginnings. I think Szeth will wear a farmers robe to an assassination. He will finish in a flurry of colour to in a warped wat, mirror his absence of it at the start. Either that or maybe Nightblood counts because it sucks colour out of things. I believe Dalinar will at some point cast away his compassionate ideas after recognising brutality is something you perhaps want in the face of evil. I believe Kaladin will find an excuse to permanently retire from Soldiering and dedicate hia life to medicine to invert his earlier decisions. Shallan began this story by leaving her family to go on a wider quest in the world in hopes of protecting them. I expect in future she will leave Roshar, if foreshadowing is where I see it, she's gonna be in direct conflict with Ghostbloods, trying to Worldhop around. Lift began yer story begging to never change. And I think she might just he Her. And by Her I mean Cultivation. I think in asking to never change Cultivation began making plans to ascend her to a Shard, a being they will not change as its a slave to its nature. Anyway I'm just posting this out of boredom and I'm hoping to come back to it in some amount of years to compare how wrong I was. But I'd like to see if anyone else has found this symmetrical dualism idea intriguing and can point out other examples.

Can Hion lines mix? Cause... you know. If they can, then the only new line they'd need is yellow and they could mix any colour you want. Try it, go get magenta, cyan and yellow paint and start mixing it and name me a colour you can't hit. You can't because those are the true primary colours according to our eyeballs. Brando has also said if there were a third Hion it'd be yellow. My point: they may not need technicolour, just a third Hion.

Hypothetically... I die. Oh no! Anyway, let's say before I die I'm a Tineye and the reason I died is someone drives a spike through me and into you. Well, now you're a tineye. And in addition to my stolen tin, you were born a seeker. Could the maniac that just murdered me then drive a second spike through you and into a third victim and for the price of one spike, steal my tineye abilities and your seeker abilities? Or am I missing something fundamental about Hemalurgy?

So my theory on this is based on SLA 5 being The Empire Strikes Back in terms of endings. You know, not the worst case scenario but rrrrrrrrrrusting close. Last time I mentioned this theory someone asked who hurt me.

The Ten Orders: How They do Everyday Things
RefusesToElaborate replied to little wheel's topic in Stormlight Archive
Windrunners: "Orders?" Lightweavers: Let it go to voicemail. Bondsmiths: Never answers, always calls you. Willshapers: Answer the call but give vague non-committal answers to everything you ask. Skybreakers: Ask for an unnerving amount of details for every call to make sure the call is being made legally. Stoneward: "Shut up, nerd. Haha just kidding, what do you need? Ok." Hangs up. Elsecaller: Realises it's you calling, doesn't answer because you aren't important to them at all. Dustbringer: Smashes the phone the instant it rings. Laughs about it. Edgedancer: It rings out before they get to it. Calls you back instantly. Truthwatcher: Picks up, but they're bad at talking on the phone so you wish they didn't. -
Nick Cage. If you think its a bad cast you don't watch enough Nick Cage.

What would you pick as your secret security phrase
RefusesToElaborate replied to Highprince10's topic in Warbreaker
I feel like I'd be a piece of rust and make my phrase something nobody would ever think to use. That is, if the goal is secrecy. If the goal isn't secrecy, then I'd choose something that I have in mind that I can easily recall. Something thst reminds me of home. "Blackwood Wattle, uprooted by wind." -
The Darkest Timeline: Roshar
RefusesToElaborate replied to RefusesToElaborate's topic in Stormlight Archive
Right fair enough, but. With a 10 day time limit for everything to go down I just... I feel it in my gut that Shallan and Adolin are going to be heading back to Urithiru as soon as possible. If they don't go to Urithiru then the only other direction I see them going is Kelek having a guilt induced breakdown and trying to drag them off to get B.A.M. and set her free. I am not a smart man, but I just... nah. They won't stay in Lasting Integrity. That would make the story feel like they're spinning wheels without getting things done. I am a big brain Stoneward and refuse to explain it. My gut vibe says I'm right. -

The Darkest Timeline: Roshar
RefusesToElaborate replied to RefusesToElaborate's topic in Stormlight Archive
Piggybacking off your points about returning to the tower, mostly. Shallan and Adolins mission is done, they're not citizens out for a leisurely vacation, they're diplomats who've accomplished their appointed task and need to return home to report it. Moreover, from their perspective the need for Windrunners is somewhat urgent because there's an active desolation. If I were as smart as Shallan thinks she is, I'd gather up every Honorspren willing and take them straight to Urithiru to bond potentials. -
[SA5] What Will Happen to Dalinar?
RefusesToElaborate replied to Forts Board's topic in Stormlight Archive
Win or lose Odium is bound to the Rosharan system. 1000 years is rust to him, but let's consider that he sees a loophole. I think it would be cheap, and not my read on Sandersons style to have the loophole be some hidden clause in the contract that we as readers have not seen. Thus, I admit I assume that we can see the loophole in front of us already. I see three potential weaknesses in the terms Dalinar and Odium agreed to, the third of which is the one I believe is the loophole. 1. Child Champion, or really any opponent Dalinars champion refuses to kill. This doesn't actually break the contract it just means Odiums champion wins because Odium can inflame murderous rage in his champion and take the win. Not a true loophole IMO. 2. Grant immortality to both champions. This stretches the fight into infinity and makes it a null result, potentially just as bad as Odium being eternally bound. Though I do like the idea of two opponents locked in an infinite clash while Stormlight Era 2 happens. 3. Should Odium wins Dalinar is in his service. Odium can wick away the pain of his servants, but what if he doesn't? What if he orders Dalinar to do something so heinous thst Dalinar refuses, and that counts as breaking the contract, therefore breaking Odiums bond to the Rosharan system? Yes, Odium is bound to his agreement but he can also make it difficult for people to uphold their agreements to him. Branderson has said that Stormlight is Dalinars story, and I am hedging my bets that Stormlight 6 begins with Dalinar breaking like the old Heralds. And that'll be his lowest point. You might say Dalinars lowest point was in Oathbringer, I say Dalinars can't have been at his lowest because Odium was trying to tempt him, that was Dalinar at his highest. "You cannot have my pain." Is not something a broken man would have declared -
Stormlight Healing: How To Get Storming Yoked

The Darkest Timeline: Roshar
RefusesToElaborate replied to RefusesToElaborate's topic in Stormlight Archive
I should clarify again, this isn't what I 100% believe will happen. This is my attempt at making the Darkest Timeline for Roshar that isn't blatantly "rocks fall, everyone dies." I would agree Odium using Yelig Nar as a champion is contingent on Yelig Nar being usable. However we've not seen an on screen death for Yelig Nar, only it's host. And I subscribe to the storytelling rule that if you don't see a body, they're not dead. Again, Darkest Timeline. The Ghostbloods are King Sociopaths Cool Kids Club, for starters. Moreover from their perspective they're standing over these early industrial Rosharans dropping rocks. I would argue it's not much of a risk for them to attack Shallan and her loved ones even now. In fact, assuming Wind and Truth doesnt skip Shallans trip back to Urithiru, I would assume some kind of attack is made before Shallan is out of Shadesmar. -
The Darkest Timeline: Roshar
RefusesToElaborate replied to RefusesToElaborate's topic in Stormlight Archive
Allow me to justify. What sounds like a better champion, bondsmith with no shards, or a warrior trained on and armed with all ten surges? As for El? Eh. It was just a vibe for me. I do think Todium is dumb if he doesn't make his champion swallow Yelig Nar though. -
The four letter ones usually work fine for me. Hey now, it was 2002, people could get away with evil back then.

So I'm thinking if Stormlight heals you based on your self image then there should be no upper limit to how muscular a Knight Radiant can get. I'm talking straight meat diesel. Here's my case in point: the pump. When your muscles are having a pump you experience a feeling of... euphoria. And your muscles look physically bigger because they're swollen and flooded with blood. With this in mind, we can assume that anyone with Stormlight Healing could get catastrophically storming huge. Here's how we do it. Kaladin and the boys suck down a load of stormlight and rock up to the gym. They then work out till they hit a pump and stare at themselves shirtless while the euphoric feeling of the pump brainwashes them into thinking they actually look like this. Stormlight healing reinforces their self image and it doesn't have to actually do all that much work because their muscles are already that big. Rinse and repeat. It goes without saying this would work best on The Lopen. Within the week we have to give Bridge Four new names. Kaladin Stormblessed - Kaladin Swoleblessed Rock - Block Teft - Chest The Lopen - The Yokeden Skar - Bar Sigzyl - Squatzyl Dabbid - Lattib Drehy - Wheyhy
