Not necessarily. Vin burns her metals instinctively, and has no idea what she's doing. She knows she's using magic, but she doesn't know she's using metal to do so.

You mean this one? Millstone was first printed in Revised. It has always tapped.
-
This is Millstone. However, it doesn't appear to be banned in anything. It might have been banned back in the day, though.

In support of Yados: In some ways, honor is defined by its challenges. For example: Dark Knight Spoilers: Without Odium, Honor would be reduced to meaninglessness.

I don't think the Reod itself would have destroyed the world. It's the imbalance of power between the Dakhor monks and the Elantrians that would have destroyed the world, in my opinion. I think there is more than one way for a world to be "destroyed". For example, Preservation without Ruin wouldn't have destroyed Scadrial in the usual sense. But it would have sent the world into an unhealthy stasis, which if taken to a great enough extreme would have been just as problematic as destroying the world. (Kind of like how the distopia in Brave New World, while not as obviously terrible as the one in 1984, is still considered a distopia). "Destroyed" is probably not the right word to use, but I think that a world with Honor and Cultivation, but without Odium would be just as unhealthy, if not as obviously so, as one with Odium, but without Honor. It's possible that there are combinations of Shards that would bring equilibrium that aren't being used, so Cultivation and Endowment could possibly form a balanced planet. But at the same time, just because two Shards are both positive, and seem to work well together doesn't necessarily mean they'll form a healthy planet.

Certainly, when someone is Returned, they can't remember anything, but those memories are simply suppressed, not erased. It follows that most memory erasing Commands would work similarly.
-
I think that "alingual" people could awaken, but they couldn't necessarily be taught to awaken. But if you pumped them full of enough Breaths, they could awaken instinctively, probably creating their own pseudo-language that they can use to define their Commands.

Not really. A diamond that size would be huge.

I think Szeth is going to stay an antagonist (at least to Kaladin and crew) for a couple of books now. I realize we want him on the team, but I just don't think it's practical or likely.

Spren- which shard they are related to.

With the exception of Szeth's interludes, which are/will be important. -
Apparently Anne McCaffrey died
Arcanist Lupus replied to Eerongal's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I've read a huge number of her Pern series, and a decent number of some of her other series. (Acorna, the Talents, and Petaybee). I was sorry to hear that she died. -
Hemalurgy stealing Feruchemical abilities *Spoilers*

I vaguely remember the purity of metalminds being mentioned somewhere in a book or by Brandon, but I don't remember what it said. -
We Need A Word For "Feruchemical Flaring"
Arcanist Lupus replied to Deus Ex Biotica's topic in Mistborn
It should be noted that we don't necessarily need one term. A lot of the words we're looking at are synonyms. If they all describe the action of tapping a metalmind, then we can use them all. Certainly Brandon refers to Wax "drawing [weight] into himself". Allomancy sticks to "burn" because there aren't any synonyms that fit the action an Allomancer takes that work better than burn. But that's not the case with Feruchemy. With Feruchemy, there's a larger pool of verbs we can use that all fit. I agree that we should agree on some standards, but as long as we all know what we're talking about, I don't see why we couldn't use "flood", "squeeze", "channel", "condense", and "pickle" to refer to accessing metalminds (okay, not the last one). Just as long as they make sense, and are understandable in context. The only one that should definitely be avoided is "compound", because that's already taken. -
We Need A Word For "Feruchemical Flaring"
Arcanist Lupus replied to Deus Ex Biotica's topic in Mistborn
I don't think Allomancy is as discrete as we tend to think. Rememeber, it is possible to vary the strength of your push. I think Allomacy works similar to motors. Allow me to show you a graph of motor characteristics: . It might be a little confusing if you haven't seen this kind of graph before, but the important point is that the efficiency curve (pink) reaches it's maximum way before the power curve (green). I think that Allomancy functions similarly. A normal burn operates at max efficiency, but it is possible to push the metal into the higher power range, at the cost of sacrificing efficiency. However, there is a maximum value to the power you can get from the metal. Other levels in between the two peaks can be reached, but with the exception of pushing and pulling and manipulating emotions, there's very little reason to work at any other places on the curve. -
We Need A Word For "Feruchemical Flaring"
Arcanist Lupus replied to Deus Ex Biotica's topic in Mistborn
Except we already have a term for using small amounts of power over a long period of time. The standard is "tapping", and since that's canon, that's probably not going to change. Also, another idea, similar to "funnel": "channel". (I think I prefer funnel, but I'm throwing it out there anyways) -
Hemalurgy stealing Feruchemical abilities *Spoilers*

Also, we should probably set put the poll in a thread that isn't about the multiplication of Ferchemical ability using Hemalurgy. We've kind of gotten off topic here... -
Hemalurgy stealing Feruchemical abilities *Spoilers*
Arcanist Lupus replied to TheChronicFeruchemist's topic in Mistborn
To me it feels more active than tapping does, and therefore it connotes to me that it would require more energy to funnel than to tap. The energy lost isn't due to entropy, after all, but due to the effort required to funnel the energy. Ditto. -
It might be a distance thing. If you're in the bubble, shooting out, then the bullet will get deflected very close to you, and very far from your target. If you're outside the bubble, shooting in, then the bullet will get deflected very close to your target. Therefore, a bullet shot inwards and deflected at the same angle as a bullet shot outwards will be much more likely to hit the target than a bullet shot outwards.
-
Also, could this be explained as a bizarre manifestation of the uncertainty principle? If interacting with the edge of the bubble defined the location of the bullet (or the atoms in the bullet) as being on the surface of the bubble, this would reduce the uncertainty of the position of the bullet, and therefore cause the velocity to become extremely uncertain, i.e. cause strange ricochets.
-
Another random thought. If the bullets deflect to an intrinsic principle of crossing the edge of the time bubble, wouldn't that mean that light should be similarly scattered and/or refracted? If my logic above is correct, then this could implie that the refraction of the bullets is caused by an interaction with the air at the edges of the bubble, not the bubble itself.

Hemalurgy stealing Feruchemical abilities *Spoilers*
Arcanist Lupus replied to TheChronicFeruchemist's topic in Mistborn
I'm throwing my support behind flood. My only issue is that it implies to me that you use all or most of your reserves (of that attribute). Usually you will, but it is possible, for example, to "flood" half your stored weight. Seeing as this is (at least for now) a term that would mostly be used by us fan-people discussing the series, it's probably not an issue, but it is a slight point in favor of "funnel", or something similar (although I like funnel). -
In this universe. The Cosmere doesn't necessarily play by the same rules ours does.

Hemalurgy stealing Feruchemical abilities *Spoilers*

I feel like it would be the opposite of stretching. If you stretch your resources, you make them last for a long time.Antonyms of stretch (courtesy of Dictionary.com): compress, concentrate. We're back where we started. Hmm... I think of condensing as in, "The water distiller condensed the water vapor." You're right though, in your context it isn't passive. These aren't connotations. This is what the word actually means. "Flaring" derives from the mainstay Allomantic verb, "burning". A flare has the connotation of a brief, powerful fire. Since the Feruchemical verb is "tapping", that means we're looking a word which has the connotation of a brief, powerful tap. "Sazed punched speed..."
