    Meat waited, hands empty. He’d been doing coin tricks with the frying pan, and this had been going to be a classic. Rebus looked at him, dead serious. “You likely don’t want to understand. I don’t know if I would want to, though I do not want to forget.” Then he smiled again. “On a lighter note, I’ve started a company, so if you need anything I can get it for you. Here’s my card.” Rebus’s card was black, tessellated with blue hexagons. He had a fancy logo (which I’ll get around to making eventually), and the back said “tap twice to open catalog”.

    Rebus smiled, nodding. “And we’ve come full circle, each learning from the other. Existing is important to me as well, and that goal has the added benefit of never ending.” He considered his own outfit, which shifted to a significantly more ordinary lab coat trimmed in orange. “I concur - may I suggest cheating?” “Us? It depends on how you count. There are trillions of people around, with more coming into existence every day, but only around a few hundred could be considered… important? Relevant? There’s some destiny and metaphysics involved, which could be used for another count, of around a dozen.”

    “Forced is a strong word, but you are otherwise correct. Do you have a reason for this?” “First problem, that! I’ll fix it.” Meat twirled a frying pan along his fingers, jumping it to his other hand then his teeth. He reached out to Ryss’s ear. “Lady Bug was smarter than she gave herself credit for. She didn’t apply it, but she recognized some important things.” Rebus shrugged. “Learning from her successes and mistakes can help both of us. There’s a reason you now exist, after all. Unlike for my own Author, I cannot immediately recognize which, but there are traits that lead to you eclipsing her.” “That is a good condition to be,” Rebus said from behind him, sticking out a hand to shake. He certainly hadn’t been there before, but he also certainly hadn’t arrived in any noticeable way. “Hello, my name is Rebus. I’m here to welcome you to the Thread, which you and whatever universe you came from are now part of. Sometimes it changes very little, sometimes it results in a pirate on a whale falling from the sky and explaining how he believes everything is a dream. It truly depends.” Welcome to you, too!

    Of course he isn’t! This guy is a piece of Bacon the Bard’s soul mixed with a fever dream, augmented by the Plotblade of Nonsense! Meat cackled, then did a cartwheel. “Epon! Aaare you?” “That is a good portion of it, yes. But humans aren’t the only ones to wither or go off track without a goal. Success leaves things adrift, be it a person or a plotline. With nowhere to go, people repeat and stagnate, and stories fade away. Even you and I might.”

    “Yon Yonson was yesterday, which could be either. Pop is the right way round! Don’t worry though, I’ll share.” That’s fun actually - getting stabbed makes the non sensible.

    Meat’s head frowned, hovering into the air and turning in place. “I’m not paying this thing.” Alright, I’m going to bed now. But this does make sense after a free association or two.

    Rebus smiled. “You ask very interesting questions; we should do this regularly. A human being human depends on how you define human. Defined as a homo sapien, it would be genetics. But I assume you’re considering this more psychologically than taxonomically.” His organs were suddenly replaced by a pipe organ, which cheerfully played circus music for a few seconds before exploding. Despite the smoking hole in his chest, though, he was uninjured. Meat removed the blade, looking down its length in confusion. He tripped, ending up on the ground with his head in his hands and Nonsense on his neck. “I am supposedly an artificial Ennuller core surrounded by a computing substrate unconsciously modified through Ennulling. I compute in Silence, Ennulling electrons out of existence and sending the resulting electron holes outwards. This causes the sparks, which I can modulate but not stop. My creation was seemingly unintentional and non-replicable, and though impressive conceptually presents a liability, given I am unsure how to utilize Ennulling externally or practically.”

    “The innate human drive? That’s the interesting thing.” He smiled. “There is no one driving motivation for most people. It’s a juxtaposition of a few motivations that drive most people. Survival and security is one, of course. Then comes fulfillment, in whatever form that may take - excitement, love, success, learning. Finally, routine and familiarity drives many actions when they matter less for the first to motivations, or even when they truly are important.”

    “That is what the human need for community is born out of, though it is taken beyond what is needed. Most humans need to interact with each other in order to maintain their sanity - which began as a drive towards settlements that provided food surplus. And of course, here interaction is required for continued existence in the eyes of the Authors.” “Leaving, stealing the enhancements we gave them, active sabotage. Not taking a job for personal reasons is acceptable. Taking a job, then killing the rest of your team and running away with the target is not.” Meat blinked, disappointed. That had made far more sense than expected, though that in itself made no sense and thus sadly made sense. The whole thought made no sense, quite sensibly sensed by Nonsense and making it glow, which could, of course, be sensed. Through eyes, and other things.

    “It’s difficult to get noticed as a villain if you conceal all evidence of it, you see. That’s why I’m attacking and not simply building up more resources.” They were flying fast, now, trees flashing past below them. A hologram displayed a scan of the area, presumably for plausible deniability. Rebus, considering the previous conversation over, left silence for Symbol to choose a new topic.

    Whan would look intrigued if you could see him, standing still and moving his nose slightly. “What happens if you touch things? Wait - you aren’t doing anything. Can you teach me how to use mine?” He smiled, confidence in his posture. “We want incriminating information, if you recall. But yes, I can pull us to PMs if we need to build suspense.”

    “Not very much. I used to try magic, but I don’t know how to stop doing this. It’s a lot easier to practice doing things than not doing them.” Whan sounded a bit mournful, turning a rock nearby black for emphasis. “You’re arguably my closest friend; of course I’d like you to partner with me! The issue is interest - if I describe in detail what I have planned, then go about doing it, I’ve wasted the time of the Authors. Hence, they cause problems so something more interesting happens.” The vehicle began to move, smoothly accelerating to an impressive speed. “I’ll use broad strokes. To start I’ll offer technology to the people of the caverns. Collaborate with their engineers to produce Nullite nanotech - and perhaps more importantly Nullite teleporters. Offer them evacuation and aid in the event of an emergency. Then, I cause an emergency, through Tam. They probably won’t all go, but I’ll have caused a panic and gotten some evacuees or at least people dependent on me for their safety. I’ll have to eventually either reveal I’m a Narrator or take fuller control, but causing Bat emotional turmoil should give him what is needed to step up. He calls in lots of favors to ‘free’ his people and Tam, I’m public enemy number one and thus upstage Malevolence. And it allows for more exposition, of both the Caverns and my moon.” “Oh good. It don’t taste good those! That’s the sword with problems, which should add up to around a dollar!” He stabs Ryss again, as he’d probably notice Nonsense eventually.

    “It comes with the territory.” Rebus constructs a hovercart, stepping into it. “Actually, if we avoid a timeskip we can have a conversation or too. After all, we don’t want the storylines to intersect.” Thanks. Whan smiled more, not questioning the fact that Tel could see through the darkness.

    “Huh. I get really hungry sometimes. But I won’t eat you!” The thing-in-the-darkness (I don’t remember the name you gave it) smiled, though a human would not identify its expression as such. “Well, we’d have to threaten more people. Protagonists often have personal stakes, but the conflict often threatens their community as well. And I now have the coordinates to the caverns.” He teleported them nearby the entrance, though outside the area he’d surveil if he had been in charge. Thus, the two of them were in for several miles of transportation. “We can timeskip this, of course. When we get there, we should at least start nonthreatening. They should be to difficult to find, but I could likely find them even without a trail - if I come trying to trade advanced technology for Nullite technology, they will probably buy that I found them on my own. The rest of my plan probably shouldn’t be said out loud - storytelling comes with restrictions, unfortunately.”

    “But Bat needs to be the protagonist before it works - not just a protagonist. Otherwise someone like Malan would have Antagonist already.” “Yes. I eat lots of food. Do you eat?” Meat smiled wider, and space fractured again. “Oh good! During my wandering I have been wondering. Kallooh kallay - then going back, the vorpal blade goes snicker snack! ” He summoned his Plotblade, stabbing Nonsense sidewise to reach behind Ryss. Rebus smiled, the room shifting to better suit the task. “I can form a vortex of raw Narration or I can make a character, but I’ve never attempted both. And to do this correctly, we want a conduit - otherwise it will tear through itself in order to use its powers.”

    Yeah - that works fine with me. Though who knows, maybe I can block out an hour each afternoon for writing and the Shard. It’s fine; I only remember because of the weird magic subplot. “And then what? Stealing Regression like that is a good idea, but kidnapping Tam doesn’t actually serve anything. If only I had Morditite.” I can interrupt plot plot if you two write yourselves into a corner.

    “Physical chains break, especially when Bat is involved. Mental chains, though, can be unbreakable, especially when Bat is involved.” Sadly I have no time right now, and may continue to have very little for the next week or so. (We’ll see)

    “I can’t exactly threaten people if they can simply undo anything I try. But this may prove an opportunity regardless.” The orb, if it had been able to follow, would have been very interested. Unfortunately, it still couldn’t move.

I should get Regression first, but then I can take control of them both and attack another part of the Thread.” “Many things!” Meat grinned, and a lasagna attached to the fishing line fell from the sky. “Some are helpful, but I can’t even without use them uniforms. Do you count?” I made this guy while I had a fever, so… Here, for instance, I wrote down about half the sentences I thought of, then didn’t fix any word order errors.

    Rebel nodded, checking to see if there’s some sort of navigation system as he walked in what he guessed to be the correct direction. “Yes, and we have an abundance of Chaotic light with which to test it.” “I would want to see the looks on those partygoers’ faces if I were to show up… emotional impact wise, though, I’m unsure either would do what we want.”

    The snake jumped, and Meat caught it, yanking on the line. “I’m not messing with you yet, but I then I remembered.”

    Rebel nods, standing up again. Then he pauses, dropping a small object to the ground. “Alright. In that case, let’s go find some people.” “I do…”

    The pole bounced, then suddenly became a snake and attempted to wrap around Ryss’s ankle. Meat himself split in two, walking around to be on either side of him. He held out of baguette to himself, then began to swing it in circles around Ryss. Rebel frowned, sitting down in a shadow so the greed could begin to percolate. “The fundamental substances seem an easier prospect. Let’s at least start there.”

    “I have enough leverage to capture Tam at almost any time. I need something to actually have them do, though, or else Bat will simply give up or attack me. I guess we could attack an important city - do you know of any?” “RETSNOM DIRROH UOY DESSIM I TAHT EREH TEG UOY DID NEHW!” Meat screeches back. He gets out a fishing pole, casting the hook into the sky. “I assume you know nothing is real. Thus, this really shouldn’t work.” He said, tossing the fishing pole at Ryss. Rebel stepped through the mirror, emerging in that alleyway. “Yes… we need to get the new powers together before the conflict comes to head. Balitan, do you have any theories?”

    “Meat the Minstrel, of course! And I’m right here, so you have.” The man’s face was split by a terrible, too wide grin. “I suppose. Who shall we attack?” Anybody want your character messed with? Or town, society, solar system, etc.?
