The Longest Thread (Misadventures)
Through the Living Heir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Will Malevolence wait? I need to evacuate the caverns, so you simply have to stomp around, do some flashy Narration and scare them. Nobody gets hurt. "But they don't ignore each other. I can stand on your bridge, and it doesn't matter which Author wrote it originally."- 111828 replies

Same one - I realized bluffing exists, and Rebus does have some Mordatite floating around... I really hate to break up the nice moment, Tam, but I'd like to note that if you do depower him, I have several resources that will suddenly become effective. And I need your help...- 111828 replies

Actually... never mind. Rebus's plan can work after all. He's waiting for the moment, though. "As you clearly know, they are one in the same."- 111828 replies

Yeah - his last plan didn't work, you see. (Plenty of new opportunities, though.) "This is what being a Narrator is. You tell reality what to do. It obeys. You recognize what reality means, have an understanding of your Author. If you concentrate, I bet you can read it."- 111828 replies

Face facts for good, perhaps? Come into your own power. Or if you want to bring him down, you can remind him of his family, society. They fear Narrators for a reason - show him that. Then split him, leave one with blue and the other with red. "You're definitely a Narrator now, with that attitude. Congratulations."- 111828 replies

Then Tam, you may have to do something about it. Or accept that Bat's free and self-actualized, while you're still here on the ground. Rebus smiled. "You understand... This is what I did, and I'm glad someone finally joined me."- 111828 replies

Have you ever had it all make sense? That moment when suddenly it all clicks, and your problem - be it new math or your nature and its flaws - suddenly goes away. When you finally get it? And now imagine that person with the powers you fear more than anything stops you just as you figure it out - just as you were about to match the power, find a purpose, define your destiny. His Author either loves him enough that once this is over, he'd come back to earth, or doesn't, in which case nothing you can do will stop this. Rebus appeared, though Tam couldn't see him unless she too went off the deep end into the true potential of Narration. "I know something close. @Halcyon The Only. And you shouldn't worry about delusions; it's as real as anything else here is."- 111828 replies

"I'm a traveler, with a few goods to sell." I don't need to touch him; you're hurting him on your own. You figured it out, Bat. She doesn't understand how it works, because she's afraid. I tried to tell people, before - most told me "maybe for you". But this is a power available to all.- 111828 replies

Well, do you care about Bat? You're bringing him down from the power you should have, because you're jealous. I can help you deal with him, if you need.- 111828 replies

"I wish I could, Tam. You know how Malevolence is, though." In a few keystrokes, Rebus had made several gun-like rods. He tossed one to her. "Impulse cannon - hit the button and it'll knock things you point it at back. It won't help too much, but it can also ground the lightning." "Deadpan sarcasm is hard to convey, but I understand. It's pure chaotic creation, though - of course it can be a green rock."- 111828 replies

Dr. Rebus ran to the elevator, reached for the button, then gaped as a crackle of lightning came from it. "That's not good. You do have some sort of defenses, correct?" Tam's head began to ring, as she heard a voice. " @Through The Living Glass - Tam? I have a job for you, and maybe it will even help."- 111828 replies

"I'm sure you drink exotic matter mixed with Prismite all the time." Dr. Rebus looked at the scientist (@Halcyon The Only), bewildered. "I only have one teleportation shield, though, and it takes a decent electric grid to run. I could leave the things here and take my chances, I suppose. If you can manage to power a teleporter, you can link the city to the space station, which will be able to do better blocking."- 111828 replies

"We might be able to get you there, actually. If it bonds like a whithergeist would, it could bestow, say, magical light powers for Nameless to take offense to." Dr. Rebus jumped, though he had a guess as to what happened. "I have no idea. Matches the readings on that giant laser that briefly showed up in the sky, and I've heard that guy - his name is Malevolence, if you can believe it - has a tendency to use pocket nuclear explosives. Maybe it's benign, though - I'll scan it." He sent the trolly to cover it, systematically destroying it and analyzing the chemical composition.- 111828 replies

Dr. Rebus shook his head emphatically. “Of course not! Now that I know there’s people down here, I want to help! And learn things - as I said, you have a different path I can potentially draw inspiration from. If I only wanted Nullite, I could probably refine my calculation to find another vein of it somewhere else. What’s your field?”- 111828 replies

“We guessed the Nullite would be here, actually. Your city is fairly well hidden, but…” Dr. Rebus chuckled, pressing his hand to his floating trolly and causing it to sprout a monitor and a few antennas. “My scanners can track things on the surface of other planets if I optimize them right, so spotting a massive cave right below me is pretty much given.”- 111828 replies

Dr. Rebus walked out into the room, looking around. He was half expecting a whole bunch of people to attack him, though. Few characters payed much attention to the events, perhaps most significantly Tam.- 111828 replies

Rebus nodded. “Hopefully we can make something up to leave out the Narration - related source.” Dr. Rebus (who was still normal Rebus, but four layers of method acting was hard to keep straight) was probably still in the elevator. “Your wish is my command.” He said, smiling as Magnificent Bastard appeared in the way of the strike. “I revealed my Plotblade, while you were gone. It was a very dramatic scene everyone ignored.”- 111828 replies

Rebus steepled his fingers. "What I would do - what I plan to do, once my own power modification occurs - is to have a backup. For me, at least, too many disparate copies is a problem, but if I ever do wish to return to this state, I will prepare a way to do so. On the other hand, you could separate, watch yourself evolve in two directions. I may do the same, eventually - it gives options, plot, character development, redundancy."- 111828 replies

Wait, I wrote that they possess "can people"? Hmm... Also laaasers! Do not forget the excessively bright flashlight! "You're something new, though. That was our end goal, actually." He smiled. "I can help you with some focus techniques, if you'd like."- 111828 replies

“Having clones can make people rather reckless, I’ve found. I probably would have risked it too, if I knew someone had an idea for the result. Of course, I would have given a warning first.” Kion nodded. “It would be possible - I’d just need to think of how to do it. There might be some words that will hide from more than sight.” We can wait a bit for that plotline. Withergeists are basically scary clouds of destruction that possess can people. Xino’s blog has some information on it. Rebus smiled again. Rebus’s head fell off before the blade touched it. He fully exploded from the presumedly Narrative blast, but reassembled, whole, a few steps away. “Would you like me to stop?”- 111828 replies

Dr. Rebus stepped inside, ushering his floating luggage in after him. Rebus grinned back. “I take it you thought of one? I’d match you, but my Author would probably make me normal explode.” Rebus cocked his head, ignoring the hole in his chest. “What did you expect to happen? I didn’t even have to Narratively no-sell that; all it took was nanites.”- 111828 replies

Kion nodded, looking a lot less alarmed at the prospect of death than at the prospect of uselessness. “I can help, if I can find the words.” “I’d be happy to oblige, especially since your Author has a new toy.” Rebus said, standing behind him. “You’re not the only one who’s had some practice.” I’ll be back on in half an hour, maybe?- 111828 replies

“I think it’s using itself up, without any definite goal.” The puddle was indeed shrinking in volume a bit, though it had spread over the lip to the alcove. “What? What do we do?” Kion’s face was white, and his hands were shaking. Dr. Rebus walked a lot more springy than Rebus normally would, but didn’t see any more interesting things to comment on. Rebus smiled. “I suspected as much. Hopefully someone decides what that should actually do, or there may be issues…”- 111828 replies
