    “Of course - I should have thought of that! I imagine you do some interesting things culinarily, building a whole cuisine from only what grows down here. My luggage there can synthesize spices, actually - that aught to lead to interesting combinations.” He followed her through the entrance, the ‘luggage’ floating behind him. “We attempted to make a… prismwraith, you could call it? A Chaotic Light counterpart to withergeists. It exploded, which was not inconceivable.” The liquid started to creep up the walls of the containers, still giving off a hum of magical power.

    Alright, then. I suppose it makes sense that their weaponry would be farther along than their communication. “I wonder why that could be - extended proximity to Nullite, perhaps? Your hidden door here is pretty impressive - the hinges show up to metal detecting, but that can’t really be avoided unless you have nanotech or want to take the reduced durability for plastic. You grow food down there?” Rebus glanced down at the bottom of the page. “You’re right - looks like I lost track of time at around 3200. The readings will keep looking odd until someone takes charge and actually settles on what it should be.” The humming increased, not so much as physical vibrations as in palpable energy.

    Mid as in modern, or mid as in halfway between flintlocks and modern? Dr. Rebus shook the hand enthusiastically up and down, though he mostly moved his own arm more than her hand. Then he noticed the tattoos (presumably) on the hand. “Is that Nullite? I was told it doesn’t interact well with the body, though that isn’t really my field. Yet, that is! I’m going to try to incorporate it, so I suppose I’ll have to learn.”

    Dr. Rebus smiled brightly, adjusting his spectacles. He put out a hand to shake. “Indeed I am! An engineer, scientist, and inventor, rather, with a doctorate.“ I assume the guns are fairly low-tech. And thus, Rebus saved the Authors, at the cost of effectively destroying two character arcs!

    Rebus clasped his hands and waited, sending most of his Narrative power away to the lab copy, who needed it.

    "Effectively, you're the one who told me that the Nullite vein would be here. Try some nonsense about lay lines and essences if anyone asks." That is a good priority.

    “Ah, alright. How much do you know about metaphysical geology? You’ll need to bluff.” Good to know. Narrators try to take away the Nullite, I assume.

    Thank you. My partner is with me, but I’d imagine you’ll want to minimize the number of people you let come with you. Rebus shrugged. “Symbol - do you actually want to come? I know my Author at least shies away from trying to write multiple characters interacting. He should do it more, because he really does need the practice.” Rebus smiled, turning to her. “This will be relevant to you, actually. Once we prove the first part, we’re going to try creating a new magic system.”

    “Very well.” The Ghost took the bag, and vanished. “Liquid Prismite would itself be an intriguing discovery. This would have worked better a thousand pages ago, when Authors still randomly chimed in and changed things, but I think we’ll still get a few interesting ideas.” The residue was giving off some sort of energy, making things near it hum with power.

    I do live in a space station and, like many inventors, am rather strange, but why would I possibly have a vendetta? I’m worried about strange, capricious, magical, and terrestrial beings that might have vendettas against me! I think I can explain the difficult-to-explain space: it’s like an alcove, but in the middle of the room, so it’s defined by a depression in the floor and ceiling, ringed by a slightly raised portion. Holographic notes appeared around Rebus, and Rebus himself grinned. “We got close; it was unlikely we’d succeed on the first time - story logic says it will likely be the third. And you did make something - I think that might be lightoil, or whatever they ended up calling it.”

    Dr. Rebus Clarke? I guess that doesn’t really answer the question… Narrators are just alarmingly powerful, and though I haven’t really seen any hostile ones, I’m worried that any I do encounter will try to mess with me. Molecular assembly can sort of conjure things like Narrators do, so I’m just powerful enough to be a threat, but can’t actually fight back if they try to mind control me or turn me inside out. Hmmm. You can do stuff first - Rebus has some things to set up, Tam and Bat don’t need to actually be in there for it to work, and I should go to bed.

    Kion stood up, a bit dazed. “I think so?” I don’t really know - I think I’m pulling most of my mental imagery from a scene is some movie where a guy tries to pay for something (maybe lunch?) using a giant gold bar. Rebus leaned forwards, glancing at his Author (somehow) to see whether the experiment would be allowed to succeed. The energy began to swirl, shimmering and twisting, maintaining its state as Narration and not collapsing into an object.

    I don’t know what tone you were thinking, but in my head that was stunned silence and it sounded pretty funny. I don’t know - I’ve never used it. How much do you think it would take to fight a Narrator, and keep my inventions safe?

    Ragnorok was underground, after all. Kion took the stone, and began slowly sawing through his bonds. Rebus brought to mind his brief glimpse of a withergeist for Nameless to reference, then poured out Narritive energy into the difficult-to-describe sort of negative space column he’d prepared. “We don’t necessarily need to get this right the first time, and if we become truly stuck we can bribe and/or capture some rabbits.”

    “I suppose I do, though with an editor and some practice I think they both could get to publishable prose quality.” He shrugged, then handed Nameless a piece of Prismite. “Of course. I can continues supplying our raw power, and Balitan can direct us, take measurements, and perhaps forge a connection to the result.” Teleporters, antigravity propulsion, bootstrapping devices for molecular manufacturing, ansible transmitters and receivers, cloaking devices. You wouldn’t believe the amount of applications jargonion production has! Kion woke up from the noise, attempted to jump in surprise, and merely managed to get himself tangled in the ropes binding him.

    Rebus nodded. “I thought so, though the lack of a subsequent reaction - and Balitan lacking context - made me feel the need to explain it. My own Author could use some better dramatic speech - yours could probably be an author as well as an Author.” — The Ghost was slightly disappointed to receive a rejection, but resolved to seek out the rabbits regardless. Any causalities probably couldn’t be put back together, but there’d been a lot of new recruits recently.

    Rebus smiled. “Actually, he just had a Gillian Cut. Not sure what he’s doing, though I don’t think anyone will want to have tea with him.” — Contrary to what Rebus thought, the Machination offered to send over a few mercenaries as guests, if Malevolence either invited the rabbits or got in touch with them.

    Meat searched the ground, then popped something into his mouth. Frost began to form on his clothes. “That help was not. Wild bee is me the speak.” That is understandable, I suppose. Would you be willing, at least, to exchange Nullite for schematics I created? “Yes… I wonder where Malevolence got off to, though I suppose he doesn’t need Prismite at this point. I should give him something, though - he did an admirable job fighting me, and I need some leverage, unless I want my house eaten.”

    Rebus frowned, picking one of the wavelengths to send a response through. There’s no reason to be hostile. I was conducting a geological survey - as predicted, there’s one of the largest natural Nullite veins ever found. He gives them a chance to respond as he continues writing. “So I’ve heard - though the last incident was resolved without much actual information on what they do.” He steepled his fingers. “The bond might have some implications, actually. We’ll see if it’s a general characteristic, or just a manifestation of Chaotic Darkness’s corruption motif.”

    Rebus could help… if you want, that is. Rebus smiled. “I found them, and I think they found me. I should broadcast something, asking if anyone is there and assuring them we’re peaceful.” He began to set that up, working slowly so he wouldn’t interrupt an initial response.

    “True. Withergeists also are weaker than the Fallen, which I believe could have solid cores due to their former status as Luxsprites. Chaotic Darkness is interesting in that it seems to have the most classes of affiliated entities, though I’m glad few of them are roaming about.” Rebus nodded, then repeated his scan in the hopes that the relevant Author would tell him what he found this time. After a moment of consideration, he threw in a few other types of scans, like radar, that would be detectable by less advanced sensors.

    Rebus nodded. “That all makes sense. I should know all of that already, but you know how Authors are. Maybe I’ll compile a lecture of some sort, something a bit more detailed than Fate’s overview… We’ll want the Diffuse Chaotic Light entity to tap into that ambient energy, though if they parallel the Chaotic Dark equivalents it will have far less raw power than a Narrator.” “Ah, good. My scanning agrees - though we should probably run a few more to figure out exactly what’s below us and how to access it.” Rebus stepped off the vehicle, which collapsed into a floating cart. He then unfolded an antenna, hitting a few buttons to begin a highly conspicuous scan of the area. @TwinStorm Kion was presumably there, and presumably unconscious and tied up.

Do you require anything more, or may I get back to running my organization?” “It may be Authorial placebo, but every one of my clone bodies has a Prismite core, which I have never seen reduce. But when I gave that Prismite to you two, it was used up quite quickly.” He gestured to the diminished state of the Prismite Balitan had been using earlier. “I’ve also never heard of a Narrator running out of power permanently, which suggests there’s some external source of Narration - perhaps the Thread itself - that is transferred to and stored within our souls.” “I should probably get some glasses myself, for the image.” A pair of glasses coalesced onto his nose. “And actually, I may need these depending upon what happens.” “I am a computer interfaced with an Ennuller core. Neither portion would function without the other, I believe.”

    “That’s fairly difficult to do, actually, given the nature of the Thread. My Author has very little idea how you - or anyone else - look, and I imagine it is the same with most of the others.”

    Meat also gives up, leaving the frying pan behind Ryss’s ear. “Ereh em tnaw uoy did yhw?” “No, actually. I was referring to the monocle - there’s no need to use only your eye muscles to keep it in place.” “Yes, I do. As you presumably know, a Narrator doesn’t consume their core when Narrating, even though a non-Narrator would if given that Prismite. We want the former state, at least as an end goal.”
