And seemed to have very little sense of self (or even any form of cognition, in Preservation's case) by the end. Perhaps it's the nature of the Shards themselves that it's good to get a new Shardholder every few millennia or so.
-
Which was the second possibility out of the three I listed. Either way, they're at the Purelake when we meet them in the interludes.
-
Also, combining Preservation and Ruin to form a "Seventeenth Shard" doesn't make sense. Since those two were already part of the original 16 in the first place, pulling them out to create a new one would give us the following: 16 Shards - 2 Shards = 14 Shards. Combine those two Shards into one and add them back: 14 Shards + 1 new Shard = 15 Shards. Since the group is called Seventeenth Shard, and not Fifteenth Shard, it doesn't really add up to me.

Also, keep in mind that Elantrians are effectively immortal (at least, compared to normal humans). Sarene could be long dead and their child, or grandchild, or great-grandchild, etc., could be ruling Arelon by this point, allowing Raoden to join the searchers and pursue Hoid. As for comparison, the voice and tone used in the letter strike me as very similar to those used by Hoid. Maybe not so much when he's being Wit in public - though some of the, well, wit is similar - but take a look at his conversation with Kaladin out on the plateau, or the exchange with the guards at the end of the book. Just looking at the linguistic patterns makes me think those words could easily have been uttered/written by the same person.
-
The way Hoid refers to the Seventeenth Shard certainly doesn't imply to me that he was ever a part of them at all, or even had all that much to do with them other than the fact that they're trying to find him for some reason. He speaks of them in almost a dismissive or diminutive way, as though he either doesn't take them very seriously, or just doesn't consider them a very big threat. They seem to be more of an annoyance to him than anything else, though he seemed to enjoy sending them on a false trail. What's interesting to me, however, is how he mentioned that the Seventeenth Shard were off chasing him somewhere else, yet here we find natives of Sel (possibly Elantrians, or at the very least, one Dula and two characters of unknown ethnicity and origin) on Scadrial and hunting Hoid down. There are a couple options for this: either Hoid was wrong and Seventeenth Shard didn't follow his trail, the trail did take them to Roshar (but to the wrong place), or the Dula's group are an entirely separate party from 17th Shard altogether. Going back to the original point of this thread though, I think it's pretty clear that whatever the Seventeenth Shard wants with Hoid, they are neither Shardholders, nor was Hoid ever a part of their group.

Honor does seem to fit, since that seems to be a major theme in the book. We have honorspren, the Knights Radiant, even The Way of Kings itself. Though Unity has a nice touch to it, as well. Inspiration, perhaps? For giving visions, and how a leader is supposed to inspire feelings of respect and honor in others. Hmm.

This is true. I still don't like having Blizzard mandate my spell rotation for me, though, so hopefully Druid glyphs will still allow for some gameplay customization.

Well, if you look at the Reod as a consequence of Aona's death - which I consider entirely possible - then it could, perhaps, still be considered as "naturally occurring." Rayse killed Aona and Skai, and in the aftermath of that incident - perhaps as a direct result of Aona's death, or perhaps as part of some chain reaction of aftereffects, or just as part of the general chaos that would ensue upon the death of two Shardholders and the splintering of their Shards - the Reod occurred, shattering the land and disrupting Aon Dor. It's a thought, anyways.

Same here, only replace the word "Geographer" with "Linguist". Copperminds, to me, would be useful purely for the ability to memorize massive lexicographies in one sitting. Talk about awesome.

He's the Lord Ruler of the Forums. It's not his lifespan that's affected, it's his post count. How do you think it got so high in the first place?
-
Ah. See, that kind of throws a kink into my rotation, with Glyph of Moonfire and Glyph of Starfire. I was getting a pretty wicked damage output just by putting up Insect Swarm and Moonfire, then spamming Starfire. If Moonfire wears off before I can pop off a Wrath and THEN another Starfire, it kind of negates the point of having those glyphs. Time to restrategize, I suppose.

Welcome! I'm Kerry/KChan, one of your friendly neighborhood staff members here at the 17th Shard. I hope you enjoy your time here on the site!
-
I don't think we can. He IS the Lord Ruler of the Forums, after all. All he has to do is burn his Feruchemically-charged Atium and his post count will go right back up, while ours keep dropping with every post he makes.

It's an especially great intro to Brandon's work because instead of telling people, "go check out these sample chapters," you can tell them, "go download a copy of this book of his that he's giving away for free." Since a lot of my friends are on tight budgets, it's definitely an attention getter. And beside that, it's an awesome book. Vivid and engaging, and it's a beautifully immersive fantasy without being the "same old" fantasy many people have come to expect. That is, people who haven't read Brandon's stuff yet.

Sazed and the Terris packmen mentioned in the logbook (and those Inquisitors who were given Feruchemical health spikes) seemed to have a dedicated time during which they filled their metalminds. Perhaps you could spend an hour before bed filling your zincminds when they get low.
-
All of ours would, I think. XD But then, as has been mentioned before, as forum admin, it's only natural that he'd have a higher post count than the rest of us. That said, I'm still going to try and at least get closer to his count. So far, it seems to be working.
-
Yeah, it looks good the way it is. Besides, like Chaos said, 10 is a holy number on Roshar, so even though there aren't 17 shards in the logo, having 10 is still a nice, significant number.

Since there's already a thread for Allomantic Mistings, I thought I'd add this one. Brandon has mentioned that, in the future, Feruchemy will split, similar to how Allomancy did, resulting in Feruchemical Mistings. My question for you is: out of the metals whose functions we already know, which power would you choose if you could become a Feruchemical Misting? For me, the answer is easy: copper. Having as much knowledge as I want at my fingertips (er... braintips?) just by wearing some copper jewelry is pretty much awesome. What about y'all?
-
Well, yeah. It was just a thought, as I've been debating making a Keeper for the rebellion. Because I don't have a thousand other characters I've already committed to writing, lol. Anyone else care to join us? Toss out an idea!

I keep meaning to roll on Emerald Dream so I can bug you, Nerual. Because RealID doesn't distract us enough when we're both online. XD And Leinton, what are your thoughts on the Eclipse system (beside the fact that you like it)? I have to admit, I've been worried about how it's going to affect my spell rotation.

When one of my students volunteers another for some task or another, I consider that student to have volunteered him or herself instead. Congratulations. You just volunteered to have two posts removed from your count every time Chaos makes a post.

I got into Wheel of Time back in high school, and fell in love. I read the entire series that was out at the time (up to book 10) in one stretch; sitting on the couch reading WoT was pretty much my entire summer break that year. I found Dragonmount, learned to RP, and followed the fandom. When I read that Robert Jordan had died and that Brandon had been chosen to finish the series, I checked out his website and blog, and then one day decided to check out his own works. I started with sample chapters, then went out and bought Elantris. I couldn't put it down. So when I finished I went back and devoured the Mistborn trilogy, then Warbreaker when it came out, and so on. Found TWG, met some awesome friends, and now here I am!

Dangit, I really wanna go to this. But unfortunately, I don't think it's a possibility. Maybe if it weren't so close to Otakon...
-
Agreed. Mentioning theories is fine, but they must be clearly labeled as such. I've even seen whole wiki pages developed to particularly deep-running theories on other wikis.

D'awwww. Shiro doesn't seem to hold quite as much power here at FAU; the most he tends to cause are annoyances. Even when I hooked up my own router instead of using the school's wifi, he lurks in the corners, waiting until I'm in the middle of something before prompting me to re-enter my username and password. We'll get you one day, Shiro...
