  1. “Then I’ll go with you for sure.” He leaned forward, kissed her, then stood up and helped her to her feet. “Let’s go.”
  2. “I’m Lily,” the one on the left said. “I’m Jane,” said the other. “We’re twins,” they said together.
  3. He squeezed her hand back. “Why don’t you take a guess?” The other girl squealed as their hands touched. “Daniel’s got a girlfriend.”
  4. “Good idea, do you want me to go with you?” he asked. She’d probably be better at all of it than him, but it didn’t hurt to ask.
  5. Sorry. I should have. “Hi!” they chorused. One of them looked between her and Daniel. “And what might your relationship with him be?” She blinked several times.
  6. He smiled at her, though it was a slightly confused smile. “Alright Jimmy, that’s enough.” He walked in through the open door, where two more young children were waiting for him. Both girls screamed in joy as they saw him, and threw huge smiles at Rex.
  7. “Yeah.”
  8. Daniel looked at her. What did it mean that she wanted to be Jimmy’s sister? “Yay! I’m so excited!”
  9. “My name’s Jimmy! Are you my new sister?”
  10. He stayed there for a long time, not moving. It really was perfect there with her.
  11. He didn’t let go of her. He leaned in slowly, then rested his forehead against hers. He tightened the embrace a little, making sure not to hurt her.
  12. He hugged her back, smiling. “You’re fine, it’s ok. But…this is helping. In more ways than one.” He looked into her eyes. In them, he thought he could see why some people anticipated entrance to the underworld. Elysium…he could see it there.
  13. “No,” he groaned. “But this will help.”
  14. “Hi!” the boy said excitedly. “Who are you?”
  15. Edgar shivered a little. Why had it gotten so cold? Her looked down, seeing frost covering the grass. “Was that you?”
  16. Edgar laid his head on hers again, leaning against her. This was right. This was how things should be. Roy could never understand Jenny like he did. And no one, not even Kylee, had understood Edgar like she did.
  17. “I don’t either.” He put an arm around her waist, letting her head rest against his shoulder. “In fact, I think I’d like to stay like this for a long time, as long as you’re here with me.” He smiled at her, his earlier anxiety completely gone.
  18. “Maybe…it would make sense, with how he is.” He squeezed her hand gently. “You can do it, I know you can. Just keep being yourself, and if he gets mad at me for some reason…well, I’ll be ok.”
  19. He squeezed her hand. His mom led them to a small house, its chimney pumping smoke. A child, maybe six years old, ran out from the house and hugged Daniel’s legs. “You’re back!”
  20. His mother studied her closely, but, finding nothing she disapproved of, nodded her head. “Come with me, you both look starved.”
  21. “Yeah, I guess. Though I am worried, he threatened me again while you were asleep, and kept mentioning he only protected you because he needs you for his plans…I don’t like the sound of that. It doesn’t follow the other ways he acted though. Not being impaled would be good.” He hoped that Roy would lose interest quickly.
  22. Daniel slowly reached over and grabbed one, blushing slightly. But she was more important than any embarrassment he might feel. He addressed his parents. “I’d like you to meet Rex.”
  23. He pulled her to her feet. “It’s our pleasure.” His wife huffed at that. Daniel stood too, looking uncomfortable. His father looked at his neck, but didn’t say anything.
  24. “That’s ok, you don’t need to know right now, as long as you’re trying. I’m Daniel’s father.” He stuck a hand out to her.
