“Because you act like you do?” That sounded mean, but it was true. He was so cold, pushing everyone away, killing conversations with his single word answers, and never seeming to care about the rest of them. Except Elsie.

“Do you…hate Jenny?” Hopefully he’d say no, Jenny seemed to be so hurt thinking that he did. He could prove he wrong, help her be happier.

A question came to his lips, escaping before he could stop it. “Do you hate me?”

Edgar hugged her. The woman smiled at her.

The dog snapped at them both, growling loudly. Edgar pulled Jenny back. The woman looked at Elsie. “Not yet, my dear.”

A woman was on the elevator with them, a caged chihuahua in her hand. It growled. “Quite down, my baby.”

“Ok.” He kissed her cheek, then walked to the elevator.

She looked away.

“A…more personal level? Like because I’m at your house, so it’s different than a normal patient?” She didn’t know what he was trying to get at.

She looked back. “So that’s all this is? A mission? A new challenge?”

“It’ll be ok,” he whispered, letting go of her hand and wrapping his arm around her waist. Gift wrapped around her legs, making them feel more secure.

“I…don’t want you to have to deal with me.”

“It is, and no.”

“It’s ok.” She didn’t look at him again.

Edgar squeezed her hand again. “I’ll be with you the whole time.”
