  1. Yeah world building can be tough. Dividing your language is a good step, as that’ll help us determine the categories of runes we’re working with, and we can work deities from there. Simplified Chinese style characters is definitely a good move for runes, though you might want to incorporate some Nordic rune elements if that’s the kind of pantheon you want to work with.
  2. What kind of world do you have in mind? What things are important to the people? Things like that help determine pantheons. Either that or make up the pantheon and base beliefs off of that. Whatever works. I can help with specific deities if you provide a baseline. How many deities are you thinking of having? Also, if you want the runes to have a language I’d go more with meanings of runes than an alphabetical deal, not letters but whole words or concepts like eastern languages.
  3. Great idea. Do you have a pantheon already or do you need to come up with one? And making runes is definitely going to be a pain but could be fun.
  4. Now if you had a pantheon of deities, you could have each deity be a patron for different kinds of runes. Each god would have dominion over a category of Runescribing, and you could then learn progressively more runes and better “handwriting” for scribing them, enhancing what you can do and how powerfully you can do it. This would mean that, logically, Runescribing should be more powerful, since it literally comes from the gods. Just an idea.
  5. You can limit it by language or general location. Someone from certain areas can develop the power as long as they learn the language properly. Or, there’s temples or monuments from the people who spoke the primordial language, which are infused with power that can make someone a Runescribe. I look forward to seeing what you come up with and I’m also open to reading your drafts as you develop your story.
  6. Well magical ink doesn’t really work as a limitation, since most Runescribing is done by carving or can be drawn in the air. You could require a magical stylus constructed from special material, as that’s a good basic limitation. Your practical limitations are well thought out, I see no real issues there. There can be runes for an infinite number of things, such as production runes that make matter of some sort, nature runes that produce or manipulate natural phenomena, mental runes that interact with and manipulate sentient minds, and more. That’s all up to you to push the bounds of your creativity and practical magic writing. Runes can be used for many things, such as possible food production and such. Again, entirely up to what you can come up with and put into practice.
  7. So our precipitation category needs to utilize properties of water for the theme. The annoying thing is, water has a metric tonne of properties. You could do something with the adhesive and cohesive properties of water. That could manifest as internal and external effects. You could also work with the biological importance of water, but that’s pretty iffy for magic. You could do straight hydrokinesis, but we wanted a unique weather magic so that’s a bit too on the nose. You can also work with water being a universal solvent, but that’s tricky too. I personally thing working with cohesion and adhesion is the best bet, as you can have that manifest as a sort of manipulation of internal structure or external connections to the user. Not perfect, but an idea. What measurements would we use for temperature and precipitation, if we go the scientific route? I also personally think that is the ideal method, since it’s easier to quantify magic. Plus, if we go with my idea of a basic underlying weather resistance, the user isn’t going to feel weather universally. So scientific measurements are best.
  8. So I’ve been thinking about the categories. The temperature category could deal with one of three things, as I see it. Speed of the user (physical or mental), manipulation of energy, or, more abstract, the manipulation of time. This can manifest in various ways depending on the temperature being dealt with. Precipitation is harder. It could deal with many things, as water has many properties. I’m sort of stumped here. Atmosphere could deal with anything to do with the sky. Flight, gravitational manipulation, enhanced lung capacity, all kinds of things. Another major problem we have to consider is perception of weather. Do we use scientific measurements to determine what is hot or what is high precipitation? Or do we consider the individual feelings of the magic user, what they find hot or humid?
  9. The category idea is solid, but it’s almost too limiting. It depends on how variable weather is in this world, but some people can go their whole lives without seeing a blizzard on earth, or only see one or two. That makes it very difficult to do anything with magic, especially if you want to have dueling magic users who might have drastically different abilities and might not be able to use any significant power. But if we have it be a sort of general thing that any magic user can get from any weather pattern, that allows magic to still be variable and interesting. I do like the idea of favoring a weather pattern similar to the one seen at birth, but I don’t like limiting it to just that. I also like the three category idea, as that lets thematic effects be produced if it’s thought out. Plus, we could have different magic users get different powers in the same weather, just following a common theme. I agree that many questions still need to be answered regarding this magic system.
  10. Man you are prolific. Almost as prolific as me. Anywho. We want a different take on weather magic. We’re not looking for weather manipulation like production of storms or causing of floods. Great. All in good fun. So, a good idea is, first of all, a passive sense of weather patterns and maybe a natural resistance to most extreme weather. Basic passive magic. Then, for active magic, a powerful ability is granted based on the weather pattern present. Hot weather? Heat redirection or generation. Cold weather? Something to do with ice, or something more metaphorical like slowing time, as cold is the slowing of particles. Storm? Speed or lightning powers. Tornado? Flight. Flood? Water breathing, enhanced swimming, et cetera. Just some quick ideas I had.
  11. I feel that. I’ve made so many magic systems I don’t have anywhere to put half of them. I’m going to have to build stories and worlds just to do the magics justice. And by the way, you don’t have to make all your magic in the same world. Different worlds lets you have wildly different magics with no need for a definitive common thread. Makes it much easier to get truly creative.
  12. Welcome to the club. Nature magic is a very broad thing, which leaves a lot of room for creativity. You could do manipulation of plants, like growing them and changing them and maybe killing them. You could do a life force deal, like extracting the life of living things to do magic. You could do healing magic, animal communication, transmutation, all kinds of things. You could even do all of those and more.
  13. Using the sunlight is a great idea, and metal to key it would work well. People could gain power from a storm. It’s not unoriginal to be inspired by something. Fantasy works because authors take inspiration from each other’s works. If you had magic that had people swallow metals for powers, that would be copying. But using metals or using storms is not unoriginal just because someone else did something similar. Half of everything any author has ever done was done by someone before them, it’s just about making that idea your own. It’s inspiration, not plagiarism.
  14. So you could use a specific metal keys the electromagnetic aura of a person to a specific ability, and that would allow for the specialization while also providing limitations. It could be one metal at a time and things like that. Using metals for a magic system is completely fine, as long as you don’t straight up copy from Mistborn. I have a metal magic system that’s way more similar to Mistborn than this and it’s pretty much fine. Might have to tweak it a little bit but it’s okay. This isn’t problematic at all if you run with it right.
  15. I’d use the second option for telekinesis. You could run with an electromagnetic magical aura, as long as you come up with a cool name for that. That would allow all of this to work well and could let your setting not have to be scientific, as magic users understand the magic as an aura and not as electromagnetism. As for limitations you could go the genetics route to limit who can use the powers, having abilities be hereditary. You could also have powers be granted by some being or something like that. As for limiting the actual use of magic, I’m at something of a loss. You could have it require some extra source of power, but that defeats the whole point of the aura. Metals for external manipulation works, but that doesn’t apply to the internal mechanics and things like that. Perhaps overuse of the magic weakens the body and mind temporarily by wearing out the aura and soul. This all depends on how you have souls and gods and whatnot working in this world, if you have them at all.
  16. Yeah so with electromagnetism being a fundamental property of particle physics, you can accomplish just about anything. Everything has an electromagnetic presence, so you can definitely work with it. I like the idea of specialization in the magic. I think neurological is the most complicated but also the most abundantly useful. You can do things like mind reading and even mind control if your user understands the electrical signaling properly. Also, you can have people strengthen themselves musically by forcing muscle fibers to fire more than they normally would, which would increase strength and speed output. Self protection would be more complicated and would require magnetism, like a force field. You could use ferromagnetic metals as a way to allow for telekinesis, just by having users use the metals to key electromagnetic fields to what they want them to do. Again, limited understanding of electromagnetism, but this seems plausible.
  17. Well an easy limit for light is to keep it to the visible spectrum and maybe a little bit into the infrared and ultraviolet, just to prevent hurling gamma rays through random people’s DNA. You could also make it require a sort of understanding of electromagnetic fields around the person. Like instead of just making electromagnetic fields and doing whatever you want with them, the magic works by letting people feel and manipulate electromagnetic fields around them. They can make them stronger or weaker or move them around but they can’t make them at will. That lets more powerful applications require skill and understanding of the magic system, and still allows for the telekinesis and things like that. And then the light spectrum can be its own deal but still related. This comes from my limited understanding of electromagnetism so it’s not perfect.
  18. Yeah so I’d go with various electromagnetic abilities, like an electromagnetic sense, a generation and manipulation of electric currents and magnetic fields, things like that. You could to powerful magnetic fields to move objects, and maybe even manipulation of the electric signals within the brain to do all kinds of things, even though that’s a super broken mechanic unless you limit it greatly.
  19. It’s sort of mutual. The Spirit chooses the person, but the person accepts the Spirit. Neither party can force the bond.
  20. It has to be learned at the temple, simply because the priests there and the constant association with the form has made each temple the perfect environment to stoke the spark. Once you’ve developed the basic ember, you can truly stoke the blaze anywhere else. The Spiritual Arts: On Nexum, magic has manifested as powerful beings called Spirits, each of which is associated with a concept or natural phenomenon. These Spirits can choose champions, to which they can bond. The bond gives the champion a piece of a Spirit’s power. This power manifests as abilities pertaining to the Spirit involved, such as manipulation of wind for the Wind Spirit. Initially, champions have limited access to a Spirit’s power. But, through meditation, powers can grow. Meditation involves letting the mind slip into the Spiritlands, a portion of the Mental Realm around Nexum. Once there, the champion can be granted a sort of vision of the abilities they are capable of. They are not given more power, but they are granted knowledge. They sort of unlock the abilities they didn’t know they could access, as the Spirit opens their mind and instantly teaches them what they can be capable of. The more they meditate, the more they can develop their powers. Some Spirits can physically warp their champions, and not all are benevolent. The way a Spirit acts is greatly dependent on how the concept they are related to is regarded by the people. For example, the dark is seen as evil and so the Shadow Spirit is malevolent and warps its champions greatly and for the worse. Any questions? What should I do next?
  21. Excellent choice So everyone on Becrux has an inner spark. That spark can be stoked into a flame, which can then be manipulated to generate and control flames. There are five temples, each of which trains a different method of stoking and using the spark. These five methods have led to the development of five combat forms of the art called Pyrogeny. Smokeform: A redirective defense, using an agile stance with flames kept close to the body in order to block enemy attacks. Not very useful for offense. Manifests as bright yellow flames. Stoneform: A solid defense which directly stops attacks with blunt use of flames. Almost never used for offense in any way. Manifests as orange flames. Blazeform: A rapid, aggressive offense, using quick motion and constant attack. Uses all extremities to generate powerful bursts of flame. Manifests blue flames. Bloodform: Redirective offense, using constant momentum to redirect an enemy’s attacks, and present attacks. Manifests bright red flames. Steelform: Aggressive offense and solid defense. Combines Stoneform and Blazeform, using momentum to meld brute force blocking of attacks with rapid presentation of offense. Manifests bright white flames. People can learn multiple forms, but most don’t. My main character is going to know all five, but very few people ever learn more than one. Any questions? What should I post next?
  22. So I made this magic system based on music, but I’m not well versed in music theory or anything. This was all devised with quick google searches so it could probably use some work. It might not be perfectly legible so ask if you can’t read anything, and if there are any music theory buffs out there I could use some help.
  23. Yeah I think I’ll run with that. What system should I post next?
  24. This has certainly developed nicely. Good work. And I’m happy to help. Magic systems are kind of my thing
  25. Interesting. This is developing nicely. Can Solfire be manipulated into any solid shape or is it more a defense mechanism with the solid shield? Is the linking for telepathy possible with only one party’s knowledge or does it have to be voluntary from both parties? Are the runes based on current constellations or did they come from past constellations and remain the same despite shifting star patterns? Is the Dawnbird a sentient being, and where does it come from? Does Solfire have universal strength or does it vary from person to person?
