    "Why would that change anything?" Siylna asked, shuddering involuntarily.

    "There is no question of deserve. My care is not something to be given to to the worthy," Rue scoffed. "So you admit that if it's bad, care isn't worth it?"

    “Boo hoo,” Siylna said sarcastically. “I’m so sorry for you.”

    Siylna shook her head. “I’ve known Victor for years…and now I know Cassie, too. He’s not that boy anymore, and he never will be again, even if he can stop being Victor.”

    “Not Cassie,” Siylna says sharply. “Victor.”

    Siylna waves back. As she does, she noticed dried blood coating her fingers and starts to pick it off. "Poor Victor..." she murmurs.

    Rue sniffed. "If you had died, it would have been...more than an annoyance. I should not like to be inconvenienced like that."

    "You're wrong. It's safer not to care."

    "I'm better than I've been in years, actually." For the first time, Siylna is able to see Ryn. Hello, spirit. "Your tail? It certainly is long."

    "It's healthier not to care about people. Safer. Especially those things that don't matter."

    "Yes. We are." It would be better if I weren't...too weak...an inconvenience and a trouble... "Perhaps there are other things you should learn nod to care about."

    "Go ahead," Siylna invited. "I can survive that and anything else you try...locking us away isn't the same as beating us. That's why you're still here, isn't it? To show off that you've won?"
