  1. I personally think a more slow, subtle apocalypse is better because it's not really something that can be fought. That gives much more of a sense of general inevitability and dread. Zombies are just kind of... "Ah, scary!" And also would mean that any interesting Regency stuff couldn't reasonably operate very well. A ball where someone turns into a zombie in the middle is not going to be much of a ball for very long. @Ookla the Quesadilla, I know you were saying that having a different time period could introduce frustration, and I agree that there are problems with it, but it does seem like the vote has gone pretty firmly in that direction. I think that as long as we aren't too firm about making it very historical, it should probably be fine? All the societal structure will make it hard for the characters to have much freedom... A modern setting would actually allow for bucket-listing and such.

  3. Let me know what you think of the story! I think it has a really interesting concept and general vibe.
  4. So, I've been away from school for a long time now. Over a month, at this point. And I have been informed that I am not going to go back to school for the rest of the school year.

Which... makes sense, for a variety of reasons. But it is strange to think about. And a little worrying. Once I'm out of my current treatment situation, I have a couple options. One is to do some sort of credit recovery and try to get back into school next year still on track for a 4-year graduation. Alternatively, I can take the time off, maybe do some community college courses, pursue my interests, etc... and then restart my current grade next year.

I'm conflicted. And either way, I'll have a lot of time that I don't know how to spend. What do I do that is meaningful?

I wish I could give advice, but I’m not great with handling my time well. Doing things that make you feel good is always a good thing. Sorry I’m not of more help.

I don’t really know what advice to give you, but I’ll be praying for you. You’ll make the right choice and God will do something with that choice you make.

...I'm an atheist, but I do appreciate the sentiment.

Thank you all for your words.

  5. Perhaps. At the very least, some environmental magical happenings increase.
  6. Also, I'm thinking it would be cool to just have some subtle, soft magic instead of a whole system, and not necessarily something a lot of people use or have access to. That feels like it would better match the tone I've created in my head, though I get if people want to do something else.
  7. I'm trying to think of more specific things, and I kind of ended up with a short story concept of my own that might not work really well for this, so I don't think I'll put it here...?
  8. "If we're fine with them knowing we're here, why not just check in on them first yourself, anyway?"
  9. If you want an idea of what I'm pulling from, read "You, Disappearing" by Alexandra Kleeman. It's a really good short story about a quiet apocalypse. Even after the realization, there are various ways that characters can choose to go forward in that kind of situation. One is to basically stop living entirely, though I doubt any of us will take that approach. There's also trying to live like normal, or trying to make the most of the time. It's interesting to have that mental burden without the world necessarily being in total chaos, and with a simple inevitability instead of an active threat.
  10. Probably not, it's just lots of debate. Currently we're mostly settled on Regency Era, but waiting for the people who haven't yet pitched it. And we have sort of just started discussion on what the apocalypse should be?
  11. Not even necessarily an entity explicitly threatening them. Maybe some sort of plague-adjacent magical scourge, or just a general, subtle degradation of the world as a whole that is concluded to be a sign of impending demise but can just almost be ignored by most people in day to day life. If you can't tell, I really like the idea of a slow, quiet apocalypse.
  12. I feel like social doom doesn't have quite enough weight to it, not to mention that's mostly just a concern for individual people in the aristocracy.
  13. I think I'm fine with regency, as long as it's not too specific and restrictive. There is still a major thing we haven't really discussed, which is what should the doomsday scenario be?
  14. I suggest a modern setting and a more general set of circumstances. I, for one, just don't know where I'd even start with something like that. I don't know the setting.
  15. I think having a bunch of pre established set up makes it more difficult to get in to and takes away from the potential of the broader concept.
  16. There are still other things to do in any other setting. And it still is less accessible to the people who like the more general concept but don't know much about this setting or just aren't as interested in it.
