Terrance just sat there.

He looked pained. "I can't... around people I don't trust. I did accidentally earlier, but..." He shook his head.

"I can't sleep..."

"I'm not going to die. But I'm tired."

"I'm... tired."

He looked down at her hand, seeming to notice it for the first time. He immediately tried to pull away.

"I'm sorry, Jenny."

"I hurt her."

"Yes."

"I don't understand."

He still didn't seem very present. "You would be."

"Why?"

With great effort, Terrance pulled himself towards the anchor watching the lights grow more clear. He saw her face, and met her eyes. They were blue. For the first time, she could properly look at them.

Terrance felt her terror like an anchor, holding him from oblivion. He knew he should let go, but he couldn't.

For a moment, their eyes met, but Elsie felt no added terror. In the void, Terrance felt hers.

"It was a nice dream." His breath began to slow.

"Yes, they will be. This was too much to hope for, anyway."

"Maybe they'll be glad I'm dead."

"Maybe it's better..."

"I'm sorry."

Tears again began to spill from his eyes.

He appeared exactly as he had before.
