He shook his head again. "If I make it through this quest, I'm not going back to camp."

"This time won't be different. I wish it could be, but it won't."

He seemed completely unamused.

"Whether or not I'm a monster, eventually you're going to get rid of me."

Terrance did not answer.

He shook his head.
-
"That you're going to get hurt because of me."

"I'm sorry, then."

He stopped speaking.
-
"No. Because if you think I'm your friend, you clearly don't understand what I am."

"Why do you care? What am I to you that justifies it?"

"Why?"
-
He continued to sob.
-
"I am a monster, Elsie. Too scared to accept it and too selfish to die."

He collapsed, and began sobbing.

"That's something a monster does. Not a person."

"I've killed someone before," he whispered. "I stared her in the eye, and she lost her mind with terror. Cut her own throat."

"Don't you remember what I did to you?"

"I'm a monster," he said softly. "A thing that causes terror and dread, then moves on to hurt someone else when it is rightfully rejected."

"You shouldn't trust me. This will end badly. Because of what I am."

"You couldn't have known. I'm..."

"It's... not your fault. I just... I can't-" His throat clenched tight like a fist had closed around it, allowing no words or breath.

He finally paused. "Why?" His voice was quiet.

He glanced backwards, and briefly met her eyes before looking away and continuing to move.

Suddenly, by chance, she ran into him. Quite literally, they collided. She could see him then, but it wasn't really like he appeared in front of her. It was like he had always been there, but she just hadn't seen him.
