Is that a White Sand or Dragonsteel thing then? The people who have read those make a point of not discussing them here. Now I'm wondering if his immortality is the other side to the same coin. "Can't hurt others."/"Can't be hurt." It does explain why he never involves himself directly in conflicts if he's somehow incapable of retaliating. Can Hoid be killed by anything less than a Shard? He says in WoR that Odium could destroy him utterly.

What did we learn about Ardent's soulcasting?
Cheese Ninja replied to gofunkiertti's topic in Stormlight Archive
"piqued my interest" On the main topic, Soulcasting Ardents are interesting, and strange, but I still don't have enough to speculate. Why should they change from normal? How much use is prolonged use? Do they actually interact with Shadesmar when they Soulcast, or do they bypass it entirely? -
I'm assuming that the Diagram people added their own notes fairly early on, probably many years before current events. They may not have realized it was possible for even Taravangian to calculate that far ahead. Good points. I'd thought that 28 and 30 were different days since Kaladin had said they were a day and a half from the Plains in 28, and then in 30 Shallan said they were a day from the Plains and that that they have been taking it easy, but they could be the same day as long as 28 took place fairly early in the day. And they pretty much have to be the same day with the quote you pointed out. There's a couple different points where I'm not sure if a character mean full days or partial days. Kaladin's chapter 59 (days imprisoned) and Eshonai's I-11 interlude (days in stormform). Full days is the only way to make Eshonai's chapter fit properly. I think Dalinar must be referring to the Tower battle with that, even though rounding 1.4 months up to 2 is a bit odd. He was swarmed when rescuing Sadeas in WoK, but I don't think he was ever "without hope of salvation." in that particular scene. I'm not too sure how to place I-12 either. Also, in your last post, chapter 54 was supposed to be 36, and 46 was supposed to be 26.

About WoK dates, any Kaladin/Dalinar chapters from 64 on are obviously the day of the Tower battle. So chapter 63 and earlier would be at least ten days before that (which would be 9-4-4). It's not clear if 62 took place on the same day as 63, or a day or two before. I'd agree that 59 was probably the day before 62, since that was the point where they started full time Bridge Run duty instead of every other day. From there the timeline going backwards in WoK gets a bit more vague again. From Peter's comments and a couple educated guesses, I think Kaladin's initial arrival on the Shattered Plains was about midway through month 7. Chapter 9 of WoK to the end of the WoK is only about a month span.

I do find Szeth's resurrection interesting, because I think there's a lot that Nalan's leaving out. Szeth had taken a Shardblade slashes to his body, then to the spine, had his eyes burnt out from that, and then fell into a Highstorm on the Shattered Plains. Next thing he's aware of, he's waking up in the Frostlands, which are several days travel away, and Nalan's slipping something into his pocket. (Which Szeth assumed to be a fabrial and Nalan implied as such.) I was wondering if it involves Nalan's larkin, either for some unique quality of the larkin, or if it is possible to recover all the Stormlight a larkin has consumed to use to power some rather more extraordinary magic.

"A Blind Man Awaited the Era of Endings"
Cheese Ninja replied to rhaiynebow's topic in Stormlight Archive
I wonder it this is going to be a running theme in Stormlight Archive books. Way of Kings also tied parallels between Wit's conversation with Kaladin on the Shattered Plains to his comments in the epilogue. I'm not entirely sure how to relate those last two quotes from WoR. Some big mash up of Art, Beauty, Expectation, Lies, and Truth -
My personal take on it is that “Capacity to stop what was coming." is fulfilled by the Intelligence. "The capacity to save humankind.” is fulfilled by the Compassion. The curse is that he's never capable of both at the same time, and that they are wildly unpredictable both in occurrence and strength. It's not a trick on Nightwatcher's part, it's just a failure on Taravangian's part to see what is necessary and when.
-
For some of them like 54 I got a bit lazy, since it was obviously the same day. 68 and 69 should be the same day, and Shallan says that the highstorm is tomorrow night in 69. Near the end of 70 is when they go into the next day. Of course, this is based on Taravangian's list being perfect, and being designed for the Shattered Plains and not Kharbranth. It's possible that it would be past midnight and onto the next day by the time the highstorm hit Kharbranth. There's a 2nd one up now that anyone should be able to edit from the link, if I did it right.

The "week" statements tend to have a bit of rounding to them, anywhere around from 4-6 day for a week or 9-12 for two weeks. "Few weeks" and "several weeks" are even more vague. And in that same chapter 28 with the "three weeks ago", Shallan refers to them having nearly died a "couple weeks ago" in reference to the same event. Chapter 28 probably takes place on 10-2-3, give or take a day, since Kaladin tells them they're a day and half away from the Shattered Plains by caravan. Chapter 30 seems to be the next day (10-2-4). They're said to be taking it easy. The highstorm is the day after that. And their actual arrival is the day after the highstorm. That chapter 26 line about "two weeks now, with no word" is rounded down a bit as well. It's been about 12 or 13 days.

Sounds good, I'm a bit tired, so I might be a day or two before I get all the references on there. Or would it be easier to just open it up to editing?

Ah damnation, I forgot to reference FireArcadia for making a list of all the dates: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/1285-all-the-days-of-the-vorrin-calendar/ https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlvnJhrTVOeKdHhQMWVIajZLMXIwZnR4R1ZJNDFsY2c I actually copied and pasted that for the initial bit, since I wasn't able to find a good way to populate the 80 rows or so that I needed. Since his had the day names, and I thought there might be some interest in those, I left them in. I'm worried that it will become too cluttered if I include all the references on it. I haven't used GoogleDocs before this, any suggestions? near the end of Chapter 50 - Uncut Gems. Year end would be 10-10-5, so I'm fairly sure she means that 10-10-3. There's also this in Chapter 79. Agrees with 10-10-3 for day 0 of the countdown. It's a bit of a work in progress, obviously. That's chapter 11, before she collapses in the slaver camp. So I wasn't sure if when she started traveling with them the next day whether it was 9-8-5 (Tanatakah) or 9-9-1(Tanatates, a highstorm day).

Words of Radiance timeline for current events. Open to editing version It's probably still off by a day or two in a few places. I'd like to include some more of the Way of Kings dates, but the passage of time is much more vague in the first book. Notes: Peter stated in the Typos thread that Dalinar should have used "Eleven days." instead of twelve in chapter 67. The dates come mostly from Taravangian's list of Highstorm dates in the chapter 88 epigraph and partially from the countdown of the scratched numbers (Which Navani says leads to 10-10-3). Those are in agreement. From there I used PoV comments about when highstorms and certain events occurred/will occur. I haven't tried estimating any time frames yet. In chapter 31, Kaladin thinks "It seemed like too soon since the last one" despite a 4 day gap, especially since it was preceded by a 5 day and a 2 day gap. A 4 day gap is pretty typical, really. Maybe it's just that the week leading up to it was fairly boring and uneventful. In Interlude 11, Eshonai says that she's been in stormform for 15 days, and that the next highstorm is in two days. This works if she's only counting the full days between, otherwise it should be 16. Some chapters are hard to place, and some I just haven't felt like adding in yet. The Interlude chapters are especially hard to place, with the exception of the Eshonai chapters, which some good markers. Any criticisms or suggestions would be appreciated.

Iyatil tells Shallan that Taln and Bordin arrived on the Shattered Plains "a few weeks ago" in chapter 63. Chapters 63 and 64 happen on 10-6-5. If I-8 was exactly 20 days (4 weeks) before, then that I-8 would be happening at the same time as the other Interludes (10-2-5). Seems likely enough. That's well before the big duel on 10-4-5 (exactly the halfway point, interestingly enough). It seems like Dalinar was planning this from the beginning. I think he was just really hoping that somehow Kaladin was wrong. Dalinar would have had to start bonding the Shardblade within the next 4 days after the duel to have bonded it by the time he visited Adolin and Kaladin in prison. (10-6-4) Timeline

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0ArL6Bg_UUQkIdFQ2NVVMa2tlT2VERFVVQU0yZUhOWUE&gid=1 There's 38 days between when Szeth attacks them the first time to the climax of the book. Graves meets with Kaladin 5 days after Szeth's attack. In those 38 days, Szeth travels from the Shattered Plains, to Urithiru (in I-10), to Vedenar, and then back to the Shattered Plains. Since in chapter 87, we're told that Urithiru is somewhere in the mountains in the center of Roshar, near Emul or Tu Bayla, Vedenar is more or less directly on the path from Urithiru to the Plains. We really don't know how quickly he covers the distance with Windrunning, but I think it would take him a good bit longer than those 5 days to go all the way to Urithiru, and then go to Vedenar. It would also take far less time that the remaining 33 days for him to get back to the Shattered Plains in that case. Graves probably modified his plans slightly after Taravangian's meeting with Szeth, but his meeting with Kaladin happened too early for your assumption that the Taravangian interlude is that far out of order. Edit: Also, I made a timeline for Words of Radiance, but it's still incomplete.

In the Feverstone Keep vision Dalinar saw Stonewards and Windrunners.

She really need an infused ruby if she was going to convince something to become fire. Although even if she could have, I doubt the brief flame from the stick would have been enough to light anything else and she still wouldn't have been able to get a fire going.

I know Radiants don't have an official Alethi nobility ranking, but Kaladin does have a Shardblade (Syl), which makes him an automatic 4th dahn. I'm pretty sure that's higher than Roshone. He might actually be able to give Roshone orders. I wonder if his parents ever found out about Kaladin being made into a slave. He sent them a message after Tien's death, but I think that was the last contact of any kind between them.

What is wrong with Renarin?(full book)
Cheese Ninja replied to Crysanja's topic in Stormlight Archive
Let's all salute Renarin, because he gave us a timeline for Words of Radiance by counting down the days, and eventually prompting Navani to say what the calender date of day 0 days, with that and Taravangian's list of highstorm days from the chapter 88 epigraph, we have an almost complete timeline, whenever one of us feels like putting the rest of it together. Besides the little bit I did here. To be a bit more on topic, I think he did used to have epileptic seizures, but the Stormlight healed that in addition to eyesight. As to him having a slight ASD, sure he may, but it's not like the condition exists in a vacuum. He's in a unique situation from the rest of the characters, with his own things to deal with, so he's going to have some issues. I definitely wouldn't call him a villain, I slightly agree with him being a sympathetic character, and almost entirely agree with the useless comment. But I still have high hopes for him. -
Actually Morsk, Navani still doesn't know Jasnah is alive at the the time of the journal entries, the chapter 7-9 epigraphs are dated as Jesesach (1-1-3), which would be chapter 89, since it says they'd arrived in Urithiru a week ago, which would have been on Ishishach. (10-10-3)

For Jeseses 1174, it can be written as 1174-01-01-01. "Jes" is the abbreviation for the first month (ten months to a year), and then "es" is used for the first week (10 weeks to a month) and also the first day of the week. (5 day weeks). You can infer from Navani's comment that I quoted that Renarin's numbers are counting down to 10-10-3 (Ishishach, if you're curious), and between that and the dates Taravangian gives for the highstorms, you can apply a date to most of the events of the book. Peter stated here that in chapter 75 of WoK, the highstorm happened after midnight, and chapters 1 and 2 of WoR happened later on the same day. Kaladin then says that he's been the head of Dalinar guard for a week after Renarin scratched that "62 days" comment on the wall. So chapter 4 is on 9-8-1, which is a date given in that bit of Taravangian's Diagram. Then in chapter 16: That would be the 57 day away highstorm. Also: Chapter 18 is the same day, and there's noted as being another highstorm that night, so with those 3 separate bits of information, we can be sure that it's 9-10-2, which would the 52 day away highstorm. In chapter 26: I'm mostly skipping the two highstorms in between (42 and 38), since Renarin doesn't seem to have left messages. The 42 day one would be when they attempted to kill Elhokar by sabotaging the railing. But here's a brief bit about 38 in chapter 31: Only 4 days since the last one, which is why he thinks of it as "too soon". This is the night of Szeth's assassination attempt. In chapter 50, which is the same day that Adolin and Shallan visit the wine shop and watch the stormwall approach, Sigzil reads it out for us: That's shortly before Navani gives her quote from which we can judge day 0 to 10-10-3. Bored, skipping some stuff: If you were wondering why the gaps got so long in between them later on. Venli also says that they only have two highstorms before the lull. Eshonai also states that she's held stormform for 15 days. So we're at day 23 (10-5-5) and the day she transformed was day 38 (10-2-5). Chapter 62 is on day 19 (10-6-4) : The highstorm where Shallan and Kaladin are stuck in the chasms is the day 9 one. (10-8-4) The whole thing couldn't be much clearer, especially after how nebulous the dates were in WoK.
-
Most days in Words of Radiance have concrete dates, pretty much all the highstorm dates. I put this in a Tarvangian-heavy thread in the WoR subforum.
-
Don't be silly. We're given the exact dates. So, the 0 day (day of the Parshendi/Alethi clash, Kaladin's fight, transportation to Uritihiru) would be 1173-10-10-3. Incidentally, Renarin was kind enough to write down (Edit: some of) the numbers I've put in red for us throughout the book. 1173-09-06-05(68) 1173-09-08-01(62) 1173-09-09-01(57) 1173-09-10-01(52) 1173-09-10-04(49) 1173-10-01-05(42) 1173-10-02-05(38) 1173-10-04-01(32) 1173-10-06-03 (20) 1173-10-08-04 (9) They're nothing special, Taravangian was just predicting highstorm dates, stormwardens do it all the time. They just can't do it with perfect accuracy several years in advance.

I really wanted to see Hoid fight in this book, I'm still a little bit bummed out. He did mock Jasnah's Shardblade though, so that's something. I'm not too confident about that post anymore Kurkistan, since I got the majority of my guesses about WoR wrong, and didn't even realize Zahel was Vasher until it was pointed out here on the forums. I had thought the Shardblade was involved in her father's death simply because "shear" was only used in WoK for Shardblades (16/17) and her father's Soulcaster (1/17). That said, none of us got anywhere close with the details of the father's death. On the other hand, I did guess that Kaladin had killed Helaran (possibly the first to do so?), so I'm not doing entirely horrible on the speculation front. Edit: Oh yeah, I also got the "They come from the pit, two dead men, a heart in their hands, and I know that I have seen true glory." epigraph right, even though I was guessing Renarin or Adolin falling into chasm with Kaladin instead of Shallan. I was also expecting Kaladin to have a more active role keeping the other "dead man" alive. source here

I don't agree with that, I think his boon was both Compassion and Intelligence, and the curse is that those two qualities vary in an inversely proportional manner. And it's impossible for him to predict which will be more prominent on any given day.
