You can stab people with crystal. Can you stab people with gold? I didn't think so. The rarer the crystal, the more it should be worth. Maybe there could be Broken Earth style giant geodes underground that have valuable crystals.
-
Yes! Much better than a completely useless yellow metal! Crystal would be a great currency standard.

There must be some valuable item that has similar value on different islands. In history, we see this with gold, which was valuable in all parts of the world despite being completely useless. Maybe one of the ores from the Forging magic system?

Il'anque continued onward, occasionally growing trees when they needed to climb a ledge. While they walked Il'anque spoke. "You know, I have a bad feeling about this. Why have no monsters tried to attack us yet? We're a prime target." @Ookla the Perpetual @Ookla the Frustrated.

Il'anque nodded. "That seems wise. I can go up first, and I even brought some vine that we can use as rope to help you climb." Il'anque climbed the tree easily. @Ookla the Perpetual @Ookla the Frustrated.

Il'anque nodded, and lead the up the path. She reached the first ledge, and planted a seed from one of the fruits that she had taken in the foothills. "Stand back." warned Il'anque. She focused on the currents of magic around her, flowing through the metals and crystal veins, and gave the seeds in the fruit one command. Grow. A tree sprouted from the place where Il'anque had set the fruit. With low-hanging branches and a decent height, it made it trivial to climb the ledge. @Ookla the Perpetual @Ookla the Frustrated.

"Actually," said Il'anque, "This is one of the few things that I planned for. Let's go to that ledge instead." Il'anque indicated a seemingly good path broken by a series of large overhangs. "I know how we can get past them." @Ookla the Perpetual @Ookla the Frustrated.

Il'anque nodded and continued to climb. "I'd love to harvest the monster, but I don't think we have time. We have to keep moving. I have a few tricks to help us climb, but we need to get to the slopes fast. Otherwise, that thing's relatives might come to see what the fuss was all about."

Il'anque looked at Isek. She thought she remembered his name. Something starting with an 'e' - no, 'I'. Isak? Isek? Yes, that's right. Isek. Right, he was the one who I accidentally trapped in a tree on our first day. I wonder if he remembers that. I sure wish I could forget it... "So" Il'anque said. "Shall we continue our hike?" @Ookla the Perpetual @Ookla the Frustrated.

Il'anque looked at the visitor. Well, it was always nice to have more company. Il'anque focused on the currents of magic around her, and closed the wound that she had gotten from the Din'al. Il'anque addressed Isek. "Thanks for helping us. I don't suppose that you'd be willing to join our group?" @Ookla the Perpetual @Ookla the Frustrated.

Il'anque watched as Avi's constellation hit the Din'al. It was wounded, but it wasn't out yet. Indeed, even as Il'anque thought those words, the Din'al broke free and reared up, aiming for Avi. I just need to find a- there! Jumping into motion, Il'anque dashed for the beast. It tried to strike, but Il'anque slid under its wounded pincer. It was time to show what she could do. Il'anque stabbed upwards, piercing the Din'al - and delivering the poison. But this was a large beast. The venom would take time to set in. And as Il'anque tried to dodge out of the beast's range, it slashed her across the back. No time to worry about that now. I can heal after we kill it. If we kill it.

Il'anque looked around, and caught the flash. It came from a vein of metal a few meters away. It wasn't another reaper, as they would, you know, make a noise. As if on cure, the ground started rumbling. Il'anque held her scimitars up to guard. And then it happened. The monster burst out of the ground, all spindly legs and sharp pincers leading into a huge maw. A Din'al, the Eater of Metals. It burrowed under the ground, finding sustenance within the veins of the Inverted Mountain. but when it heard vibrations on the surface, it went for blood. Il'anque parried one of its strikes with a scimitar, striking in with the other. Well, this journey certainly wasn't going to be boring.

Il'anque nodded. The First Layer had a lot of monsters, so she wanted to be prepared. "I'd recommend applying the venom now. We probably will have to face things that can't be killed easily." Following her own advice, Il'anque applied the venom to her scimitars.

Il'anque nodded. She was glad that Avi had worked out the route, because planning wasn't a very Il'anque thing to do. The sheltered path would hopefully stop monster attacks, so it probably wouldn't be worth it to coat the scimitars with poison now. Il'anque followed Avi up the slope. "I have some food, in case we're stopping somewhere. I wouldn't recommend stopping in the caves, though. There are some pretty scary things that I'd rather not face in those."

"Yes!" Il'anque held up two small bottles of a clear, viscous liquid. "This should last us until the top of the mountain. It doesn't dry very fast, so we can coat our weapons now." Il'aque also held up one of the spurs. "I managed to get this as well. It won't be too useful yet, but it'll make a great dagger once we can carve it."

Il'anque smiled. "This shouldn't take long. Do you know how to skin something like this? I can harvest the venom. We might have to leave the claws behind, though. I doubt we have enough time to get those."

"Wait." said Il'anque. "You're not just going to leave this thing here, are you? Do you know how useful this corpse is?" Il'anque began harvesting the venom off of the claws. "This stuff could save your life against one of the monsters higher up the mountain. The pelt acts as a focus to shadow magic, and the bone is probably a better weapon than half of the things in the armory. Surely you're not just going to ignore that!"

Il'anque followed. After all, she hadn't made any kind of plan for this. It would be best to follow avi, and- hey, what was that? A blurry form pounced at Avi and Il'anque. This was a del'kthin: a panther-like beast. It remained cloaked in the shadows and then struck with its paralytic venom. Il'anque parried its strike with one of her blades, but this beast was thirsty for blood. "Avi!" yelled Il'anque. "Slight problem here!"

Il'anque noticed motion. She turned, expecting it to be another monster - but no. It was Avi, another initiate. They hadn't interacted much, but Il'anque knew Avi well enough to feel comfortable climbing with her. Well, having team was always better than going solo. Il'anque jogged towards Avi, giving a friendly wave. @Ookla the Perpetual

Il'anque broke into a jog. The foothills weren't too bad. Nothing that she hadn't faced before during training, at least. A shadow leaped at Il'anque. Without looking, she brought up one blade in a clean slash. The monster would survive, but it wouldn't bother Il'anque any time soon. She continued jogging, eventually reaching the top of the first hill. She looked at the mountain ahead. Another valley, with hills slowly rearing higher, leading into the great mountain itself... this would be a challenge. But Il'anque had a few tricks up her sleeve. I just need to find a... there. A small tree stood alone at the top of the hill, somehow finding root in the veins of metals. Il'anque put her hand on it, and reached into the energy of nature around her. She gave the tree one primal command: Grow. The tree grew larger, with branches and flowers forming everywhere. This was... more power than Il'anque wanted to use. But that didn't matter. Il'anque grabbed a few of the fruits. These were wonderfully useful; they could be eaten to provide food and water. When ground up with a few select items in Il'anque's pack, they could make either poisons or cures, and they would be useful if Il'anque needed a seed for magic in the future. Il'anque continued running, occasionally striking out at monsters that got too close. Finally, she arrived at the base of the mountain, where her true test would begin. @Ookla the Perpetual

Il'anque sized up the mountain before her. Sparkling veins of crystal and metal grew upwards here, winding up like vines. This was the final test - to get to the top and claim the White Iron, the metal of the soul. Scimitars, check. Bloomsilk, check. Time to finish this. "You may begin", said Death. Il'anque started climbing.
