Ma'tani pulled off her cloak and pack and tossed them to July. She rested a hand on the hilt of her sword. "At some point you're going to have to realize that, however important you think ending the life of some random person you claim has evil powers is, it's not worth the lives and livelihoods of others." She gestured at the crowd surrounding the burning tavern. "These people hate you now. If you're supposedly the protectors of good, the destroyers of evil, why are you destroying part of what the people of this town care about?" She tightened her grip on the sword's hilt. "You say you're willing to fight us? Well, I'm willing to fight all of you, knock you all senseless, if it means hammering into your heads that it's not worth it."

"I'm glad you're safe," Ma'tani said to Jolane. She turned and scanned the crowd until she found Nelan, the head "witch-hunter". She stalked up to him and punched him across the face. @BlueWildRye

Looks good, except there aren't really kings in this world anymore. Think more modern/future corporate dystopia. So the advisor thing still works, but he should be serving someone in a different position.

I like the concept, but I think you should explain it, either with some kind of mental issue or maybe Hemalurgy. Like, they have a spike and a cognitive shadow is whispering into their mind.
