    Allera blinked, once, then twice, then let out a strangled noise as the portal popped out of existence on the viewer. They looked at their wings, somewhat in disbelief. …What just happened? Why had they just thrown away their one shot of freedom? It was like… they had been in some sort of trance.

    The guard dumped them unceremoniously in their ship, commenting briefly in the strange interior design. Allera powered it on, then flew it out of the hangar and back through the portal.

    The guard cuffed Allera, Variance, and Strohger, and led them through the same hallways to their ship.

    Allera paused. If they stayed, then they’d be putting all of them in danger. Ayia and Shim were each more powerful than the rest of the group combined— they’d be fine. But… last time they’d thought that— No. That was in the past. The guard cleared his throat. “Are you coming or not?” Allera looked down. If they didn’t have to make eye contact with them, it would be fine. Everything would be fine. “Yes. We’re coming.”

    The door to their room opened soundlessly, and a burly, uniformed guard entered. “You two,” he said in a gravelly voice, gesturing to Allera and Variance, “and you—“ he pointed to Strohger — “are free to go. I’ll escort you to your ship.” “You two,” he said to Ayia and Shim, “are more… interesting to the Lieutenant.”

    hmmmm I had an idea for a ruleset a couple days ago and have been working it over in my head— if someone else wants to take this one, that’s fine by me, but I’ll probably lay my claim on the next one.
