Not exactly Bullet time is 'kinda steel thing', but at the same time if F-Zinc lets you think fast, but your reaction time is not sped up, and F-steel also lets you think fast but your time is also sped up, what is the point of F-Zinc? Hence why I think that F-Steel won't let you think faster, only react and move faster. To certain extent thinking might be sped up as well, but not to nearly the same levels as with F-Zinc. I mean, ''bullet time'' was just a very quick reaction and movement (see Matrix 1). After all, F-steel is physical speed not physical and mental speed. F-Steel is plenty powerful already, I don't see a need to strengthen it even more. @alder24 , @Trusk'our yeah it was in one of the first 'vs.' threads. Basically compression will lead to exponential loss, hence you need exponentially large attributes. I.e. Mach 1 would require stores on order of e^34 (Mach 1 = 340 m/s, max human speed 10 m/s for simplicity), which is about 10^14. There were some more details to it, but basically these sort of feats are accessible to compounders only.

I think there will be few points: As mentioned by others rarity While they get sped up reflexes (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/76/#e6398) Steelrunners won't think faster , so they cannot really use their speed with e.g. great precision (i.e. get around opponent to strike him in very small weak spot for example). So fast thinking will remain F-Zinc thing, while reflexes and movement will be F-Steel thing. Their speed breaks laws of physics (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/361/#e11357) , and this might mean that while moving fast, they don't have increased momentum and kinetic energy. As a result, they would not be able to e.g. wield melee weapons when sped up (unless something would be increasing their strength as well). This is simply due to physics, Steelrunner is still as strong as usual, so even when accelerated, they can move themselves faster, but when acting on external objects, they are not acting with greater force nor do they have greater momentum. I.e. Steelrunner when sped up 10x would not be able to swing sword 10x as fast, because they are not strong enough. Result of this would be that they are great messengers, have great defense (reflexively dodging), and their melee offense is rather limited (though with projectile weapons they would work quite well). I think the above would also fit pretty well with what we know of Steelrunners in canon, in that in Era 2 while they do work as e.g. fast delivery man, they don't seem to have many military applications (which if they were as OP as most think, they would be among the most desirable bodyguards imaginable). They would not be able to run that fast, they would have trouble breathing at much lower speeds I think. Wind pressure at Machs speeds would destroy their lungs.

So there is this new WoB, saying that the answer to how Heralds, CS, spren, etc. can leave their planet is in RoW Any ideas for what the answer is? The only thing that comes to mind is blanking of Investiture from the 'Shardic Rhythm', similar to what Navani did with Stormlight. Nothing else was really detailed in RoW that could be an answer.
-
Apologies for being unclear. I meant it the same way @Duxredux explained it, i.e. Plate magnifies input, but top-power of Plate is limited and is not additive with native strength of the user. My post was merely to reply to alder24 as to why Dalinar is tired despite using Plate.
-
Dalinar still has to do the work of moving his own body, that does not mean that the actual strength output is in any way affect by his own strength.
-
I'd say that no, it is not. Shardplate is meant to be powered armor analogue, and those simply use their own strength.

Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
therunner replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It was clearly not Atium, but Kaladin in the arena does describe feelings that are oddly reminiscent of the atium, what with feeling like he could easily dodge with his eyes closed, like if he knew where the blade will strike. Not really, Kaladin is among the best fighters in the Cosmere, Vin-equivalent for Stormlight. Ham, not so much. Kaladin defeated Shardbearer without Stormlight (or with only very miniscule amounts), feat that no one else did. Mainly with Stormlight enhancements he fought of multiple Singer War-Pairs, i.e. Warforms who are comparable to Pewter burner. -
cool ideas for large scale use of unsealed metalminds
therunner replied to hoid without wit's topic in Mistborn
Blanking might help make it work, but straightforward hemalurgy won't work. And I personally doubt Blanking would work well enough (I will elaborate on this below). It is also possible that Marsh does not know how difficulty it has gotten, considering he is 'grandfathered-in'. Indeed. I will expand a bit on why I think Compounding won't be possible. Simply put, Compounding being widely available terribly distorts dynamics of Scadrial (and Cosmere), and also removes the primary limitation of Feruchemy (you have to give up attribute for a time to get it later). Brandon has talked multiple times about how limitations are what defines a system, so I don't think he would make it so that Feruchemy's is effectively nullified going forward. Before TLM it was widely held belief that Medallions and Hemalurgy will allow easy Compounding, making Scadrial a powerhouse. I disputed that on the grounds of limitations (as above), and was proven right on Hemalurgy, as Brandon clearly made the decision to restrict Compounding going forward. Going forward, I believe the same will be the case of Medallions, as Medallion-based Compounding would do exactly what he prevented Hemalurgy from doing (and even without the ethical issue, and opening up yourself to control issue!). Unkeyed Metalminds might allow for something, however it is notable that nothing of the sort happens in either BoM or TLM, despite the Set having some access to unkeyed Metalminds. Nor do Ghostbloods seem to be taking advantage of that, instead relying on Dor jars for large effects. So I don't think they will allow for the same effects Miles achieved. In fact, letting unkeyed metalminds be burned would allow any Hemalurgist to get access to Compounding (the very issue Brandon was trying to solve). It would work as follows: Be Allomancer Grant yourself corresponding F-spike Grant yourself F-Aluminum spike Ta-da, you can Compound So letting unkeyed Metalminds be burned means any Allomancer can become Compounder with just two spikes. Similarly, if Blanking is all that is needed to allow Compounding, than anyone can become Compounder with three spikes. Considering Brandon's clear intent to limit it, I don't think he will backtrack that much on it. -

therunner replied to hoid without wit's topic in Mistborn
Well, TLM Arcanum is pretty clear, Compounding does not work through Hemalurgy, period. Yep, basically that. We know that Invested powers do carry Identity, Stormlight spoilers: I don't think we have actually ever seen Allomancer burn Unkeyed Metalmind, so I don't think it would work that way. -

therunner replied to hoid without wit's topic in Mistborn
With Hemalurgy that would certainly not work, as Hemalurgy can no longer allow Compounding. With natural Allomancy, I also don't think it would work, because the Feruchemical power is not part of your spiritweb, and Medallions have their own Identity which would contaminate the process (basically the same way as it is happening in Hemalurgy). -
How fast could a steel pushed bullet go...
therunner replied to Colors's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Good call, forgot all about that. Not fundamentally different or more complicated. Gravity won't play a role at all (at most in range, but that is not part of question), and atmosphere mix will change how reactive atmosphere is. However, acceleration would be dominated by the Duralumin Push, not by the gunpowder explosion, so atmosphere will play only a minor role. -

therunner replied to Colors's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well, physics of Pushes is wildly inconsistent (if you Push with constant force coins should be handily supersonic, which they are not), so sadly no proper calculation can be done. Theoretical maximum with Abrasion applied (and assuming Abrasion won't interfere with pushing), is of course speed of light, however they won't reach that. I'd wager something along the lines of several dozens of Machs. -
Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
therunner replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Only Coinshots, Lurchers and Mistborn would notice that. And even then, it could still be aluminum alloy. In fact that is most likely what they would think. Warhammers and maces were designed to cause damage through plate, tactic which won't work here. So there are tactics opponent faced with plated foe could try which would be woefully inadequate to fighting Shardbearer. But Awakener would use swarm basically only to fight Shardbearer, otherwise it is giant waste of Breath, as you'll need hundreds to get swarm of anywhere reasonable size. True, however that does not mean that Awakener and Mistborn would immediately know that the sole weakpoint is the visor (as regular plate has other openings), or that plate would cease to function after depleting Stormlight. Nor would they immediately assume the Plate regenerates, increases strength, speed and reflexes and weight over half a ton. And most importantly, they would not know that Shardblade is one hit kill weapon that cuts through everything but Aluminum or other Invested weapons. If they tried to block as they would be trained to, they would just die. Shardbearers don't tire as fast as you assume, they fight in battles for hours. Dalinar was digging latrines through solid rock, and stopped when he basically destroyed the hammer, again after hours of work. Which also shows that Stormlight is not drawn so fast as for this to be a risk (in fact, the only incidence of Shardplate locking up due to lack of Stormlight was in a duel, and Adolin purposefully inflicted dozens of hits to cause it). I don't think Pewterarm can dodge Shardbearer for hours, or even dozens of minutes, they are not using Atium. So while long fight favours Pewterarm (if they have enough Pewter), it basically never will get to that stage, because they will have to dodge dozens of attack every minute for dozens of minutes, and single mistake is their loss. Szeth trained was years with Honorblades. Dalinar trained for years with Shardblades and is explicitly a prodigy. Kaladin is weird (what with the pseudo-atium effects). Fused have literal millennia of combat experience. Stormlight might not provide as much strenght boost as A-Pewter (though even that is debatable, as Kaladin wrestles with Stormform), but it does massively improve endurance and reflexes. Let's look at it this way, Warform Parshendi is in many respect comparable to Pewter arm (as they have improved strength, healing, endurance and durability), and even than, dozens of Warform where unable to kill Sadeas, when he was immobilized. And then Dalinar starts murdering them by literal dozens. The only way for them to match Shardbearer is with Shards of their own. If that does not show how far Pewterarm is outclassed, I don't know what would. -
Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
therunner replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Sure they have improved grace, but that is not why they are dangerous, the increased strength, resilience and ability to power through damage is. Against Shardbearer, Pewterarm is well...worse in everything with exception of grace. Shardbearer has to hit Pewterarm once, and it is game over. Sure, some Pewter arm might do it, but it is basically one in a hundred occurrence. Pewterarms are slower, weaker, less durable, and are only bit more dexterous. And reflexes we have not way to say which is faster, but both are improved over baseline human. We do see both Pewterarms and Shardbearers get hit by regular humans, so both can hit each other, but only one will lose after single hit. Shardbearer also has enhanced mobility and reflexes, so Pewter arm will have less of an advantage than they would have against regular opponent. And Shardbearer has to land a single good hit, once Pewterarm loses control of any single limb it is basically game over. Problem with a lot of these tactics is that sure, they can win against Shardbearer, but they can pull it off maybe once in a hundred attempts, when everything goes right; or if they have advantage of prior knowledge of their opponent. If we grant similar knowledge of their opponent to Shardbearer, so they too can prepare, it will start skewing back drastically. E.g. Awakened swarm, just put metallic net in the eyeslit, perhaps some Aluminum alloy or silver. Suddenly Awakener is in trouble. -
Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
therunner replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Ah, thank you. Then I stand corrected on the eye slit. Still, it is easy enough to cover with a forearm for example, bit of a handicap, however one that can be worth it to run down an opponent. Pewterarm can do in the sense that they will do better than a human, but Pewterarm would get absolutely stomped by Shardbearer. Shardbearer can do everything Pewterarm can, but better (possibly sole exception of agility, however 'Thug' does not exactly imply they are known for their grace). Don't forget that Deadplate survived minutes of Warform parshendi wailing on it with hammers and maces. It is rather sturdy. I doubt Deadplate does not heal at all in combat, in fact the one the first things mentioned about them is that they heal. Sure, they won't heal large damage, however minor cracks from a slingshot would be healed in minutes I would expect. Yep, basically this. I broadly agree with your assessment, though I would put that Mistborn heavily depends on their surroundings. If there is little metal, they will have difficulty keeping Shardbearer away from them. Advanced enough is the key word. Aircraft is probably the only thing requiring a single operator that could reliably finish off Shardbearer. Sniper rifle might break plate in one-two shots, but once Shardbearer is aware, they are too mobile to hit reliably. Grenades or explosives might be useful, if only because of the eyeslit the pressure difference would do considerable damage to Shardbearer. Those are might be too slow, and certainly not accurate enough to pose a threat to person sized target. -
Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
therunner replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, but since the lighting strike was in his field of view, either the eye slit is so small he was not blinded it, or the eyeslit was not there. I don't have the book on hand, but I will check it. Slingshots wielded by Warform, throwing stones the size of human head. I.e. slinghots wielded by someone comparable to Pewter arm. And even then it did only very small cracks, which healed rather fast. And Adolin had Shardplate and Blade of his own, so not really applicable example. The only person to defeat Shardbearer with both Plate and Blade without any is Kaladin, and he quite possibly already had some small passive enhancements. Dalinar won his Plate, but we don't have any details. And that time he was working with his handpicked guard, so they probably played role. When wining his blade, he was wearing his Plate and had "Shardhammer". So Kaladin is still the only person to defeat Shardbearer without either supporting team, or Shardplate of his own. Plate and Blade is absolutely gigantic advantage against anyone without it, unless they have some Invested Art to circumvent it, or to straight up overpower it. -
Who can beat a shardbearer and keep their shards
therunner replied to Highprince10's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'll make a couple of points: Eyeslit can be closed even on deadplate, Adolin does so in WoR. So anyone relying on it being present has little chance of killing Shardbearer that excludes weaker Awakeners, Tress, or Seers Shardbearer is at minimum 10x stronger than adult human, and is faster than a horse (so possibly faster than Mistborn or Wax). It also improves agility, dexterity and reflexes. so the only people who could go toe-to-toe with Shardplate in close quarters are F-Steel ferrings, Fullborn and Aether Golem (though that relies on having access to seemingly rather rare resource). Everyone else is either weaker, or slower or both. Heralds and Returned would be also among those who could do it, as they are simply far beyond in skill and also have enhanced reflexes. So in close quarters Fullborn, F-steel ferring (with large stores), Herald or Returned would have a chance. Seers won't get hit, but they have little ways of doing any meaningful damage with visor closed. From long range, the attacker has to be able to maintain distance. That means better mobility than Shardbearer. That would be Elantrians, and possibly Mistborn/Coinshots (depending on the terrain). These would have also have ability to damage the plate, though Coinshot would require powerful gun, as they don't have access to Duralumin. I don't think anyone else could do it, not unless the situation is intentionally stacked in their favor. Theoretically a regular human with a machine gun and enough ammo in a secure location could do it, but that is stacking the deck in favor of the attacker quite a lot -
Could Kandra bring back Mistborn?
therunner replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Invested powers are part of the spiritweb, and that is something Kandra won't replicate as they only mimic what they consume (albeit possibly down to DNA level). In essence, even if you cloned Vin, the clone would most likely not be Mistborn, because it would not have appropriate spiritweb and spiritual DNA. You would need something to use something like Forgery or Awakening to create a spiritweb with appropriate powers. -
Roundabout Investiture Resistance for non-Invested weapons
therunner replied to Trusk'our's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think the intent there is that for a proper spike, it becomes part of your soul during first spiking, where you Spike has to make contact with blood. So for a piece of metal to get that 'soul interference', it has be stabbed into a body, and wound it/make contact with blood. -
Vin was Ascending. She was not capable of it without that. Shards are well, Shards. She was at that point regenerating just from holding all those Mists, just like Radiant would. She was no longer running just on Allomancy. That sentence literally contradicts the WoB, so I will take author's word over yours. Not sure how much clearer it can be. Shardblades are more Invested than literally anything on Scadrial, short of pure Godmetals (possibly, Concious entities are more difficult to affect than innert matter, so Shardblades as living bodies will be more difficult than just Tavanavastium/Koravellium). However, clearly I won't convince anyone.
-
Not really, I am just literally quoting what the WoB says. True, however here he simply answer a direct question. "Are Shardblades allomatically pushable?" "Yes, by someone with more power than anyone you have seen so far". There is no attempt to mislead, it is a direct answer to direct question, with a bit of additional information. Misleading answer would be saying "Yes, by someone you have seen." and meaning literal Shard, when that is clearly not what the questioner meant. Sazed is not Allomancer, he is at first Feruchemist, then Shard. Hence, he is not part of the question at all since he is not using Allomancy, and so the answer is not false because of his existence as a Shard. Bands make you a counterfeit Fullborn, you won't be as powerful as Rashek was (as he made himself into one using WoA). Rashek > Bands. Hence, wielder of Bands won't be able to affect Shardblade. Yes, that is basically what I said, though I would add that I don't think Duralumin would be enough even in Rashek. Also regarding Bands, they are less Invested than a Shardblade, hence I doubt they can provide enough power to Push something more Invested then themselves.
-
Per WoB from 2016, pushing Shardblade is beyond the power of anyone we have seen up to that point. So Rashek would not be strong enough, nor would Wax with Bands. I suspect this also means even with Duralumin these would not be strong enough.

Issues with the chronology of the Iriali (No SA5 Previews)
therunner replied to JPGU's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Thank you for the correction! In that case it is basically certain they stayed on Roshar far longer than on other planets, and quite likely that Iri is named after them and not vice versa. -
Issues with the chronology of the Iriali (No SA5 Previews)
therunner replied to JPGU's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Not necessarily, the kingdom could be named Iri, and Iriali could then take their name from the kingdom in which they found refuge. I doubt they call themselves Iriali on Scadrial, or Lumar. Nations, and societies change names, so it stands to reason Iriali could also simply change their names. Just because we know them as Iriali first, does not mean that is their original name. -
Why doesn't the Godking get more respect?
therunner replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
You would not create another Nightblood that way, at best you would probably get something like worse version of the sword Azure has. Endowment was involved in creation of Nightblood, Godking won't replicate that.
