...that is what I said? That Stormfather was intentionally misleading, despite possibly saying truthful statement. And he did not say "I've shown you all" but "I've shown you all that was created". If he semi-actively creates visions then that is also true. My point is not that Stormfather was truthful, but that he was intentionally misleading and lying by omission, and not stating outright lie in this statement. If there are more visions of Nohadon then yes, that loophole is closed and he did lie outright. But I would note that even in other quotes you raise, Stormfather does not outright lie, he avoids, he misleads but does not outright lie. Specifically, So he avoids, he misleads, but from what I can see does not lie outright. Yep, I think so too.

If it would not be much trouble I would appreciate it Well, that is hard to quantify, however 45-60mph is in the range that would be expected from the carriage/spikeway quote. I don't think so. We have not seen her go on spikeway (as far as I can remember) so similar sensation could be there as well, we simply did not see it. And custom build road for fast travel will be faster than improvised (and more flexible method). Spikeway will provide better anchors than horseshoe on the ground, and she will not slow down by having to pull them back. Well, she thought she could run back in time, so she could not have been that far. Pewter dragging mostly lets you sprint non-stop (Vin comments in TFE that her and Kelsier are slower than a horse), so lets say ~15 mph. Per WoA. ch 51, they are "only a few days' ride from Luthadel" , even today horse can travel 20-30 miles, and that is in good conditions (i.e. not Final Empire). So let's 30 miles per day. Few days is ~4-5 days (it is less then a week based on Spooks comment), so they would be at most 150 miles from Luthadel. Short time after that, Vin decided to run back. After few hours, she is running low on Pewter, so assuming it is 4 hours, she would be now ~90 miles from Luthadel. Shorly after she collapses, stating that she is "still hours away from Luthadel", so the distance remaining must be something that can be run in several hours (with Pewter). She also says with Pewter she would arrive long after dark. She then takes off from the small village, and it takes her circa hour before she adds fifth shoe, so her trip took longer than 1 hour. As such, I think estimating her travel speed to be in the 45-60 mph range fits the data in the book. I'll note that the above has lots of assumptions, but the simple facts are that: They are certainly less than 180 miles from Luthadel when Vin starts traveling back. Vin starts horseshoe trick after Pewter dragging for few hours. Vin thinks that she can Pewter drag the remaining distance in several hours. She travels with horseshoes longer than 1 hour. That certainly limits Horseshoe speed to below 80 mph.

I happily concede Though I'll say Stormfather can be trusted up to a point, he is less malevolent manipulator and more someone who was failed by men again and again (if e.g. also Sunmaker received the visions). No suprise he no longer trust men with visions he saw lead them astray repeatedly. This can still be true though. Dalinar asks about visions of Nohadon specifically, if there are no other of Nohadon, then what Stormfather said is correct: "I have shown you all that was created (of Nohadon) for you to see", though intentionally misleading.
-
Yeah, I think so too. Would explain why Stormfather chose not to show those specific visions. Same here, but sadly I suspect all she will find at Narak is that they have headstart on getting to BAM. After all, it would not be much of a race if your protagonists are in the lead.
-
It did not take long Other notes: I feel you Dalinar, Shards are so storming indirect. Also, I feel my theory on Cultivation shaping new (and improved) Vessels got slight boost, plug And Dalinar goes to SR as well, we will learn quite a bit I think. Also, it seems there were other Visions that Stormfather chose not to show Dalinar. He probably showed them to Gavilar, and considers that a mistake. Adolin is really angry with Dalinar, I don't like that. Loophole is...not anything we could have expected, but it makes sense from Alethi martial perspective. Ghostbloods are hiding outside of Urithiru, smart of them. I like this more compassionate Shallan, she was always there, but now it takes forefront.

Correct, however there are numerous spren that we know exist, yet there is little evidence of them so far. E.g. Spren of stone/Ur (only Venli interacted with them) Wind (only active post Odium exchange) 2 Unmade (Dai-Gonarthis and Chemoarish) Sibling (when pretending to be dead) So the remnants might as well be present, but we have not yet seen them. Perhaps the free Listeners will encounter something of such nature, or perhaps as broken spren of Stone, such signs won't be visible to anyone who cannot Stoneshape.

I would say no, because stronger Connection does not grant greater understanding in either Allomancy or Surgebinding. Not to mention, there is specific reason why stronger Connection helps in those two cases: In Allomancy, stronger Connection to Preservation/Harmony = access to more Investiture (wider 'hose') In Surgebinding, stronger Connection to Spren (not Honor) = spiritweb is better suffused with the power And best I would expect better intuition, but even then, not in Hemalurgy. Reason being is that while Hemalurgy is Invested Art, Hemalurgist (as in, one who makes spikes) are not Invested. Hemalurgy relies solely on knowledge, not on any Investment on the part of practitioner.

Nergaoul and Kholinar is probably one of the few connections I would dare make. But generally, we know very little about the Unmade, and even less about Dawncities. So matching them seems near impossible to me. I would guess it died/was broken, similar to what can happen to Shards, but on smaller scale.
-
I would like to propose that Dawncities were spren-cities, similar to what Urithiru is. First possible hint of this is in Oathbringer, where on p. 611 Kaladin notes that the strata in Kholinar look like those of Urithiru. Second, we now know that there were other ancient spren, such as Wind (possibly Stone), and they might not have been singular. As a corollary, I would propose that spren of Dawncities became Unmade. They were Made (into the Dawncities) and then Unmade (and cities partially broken with only some larger patterns remaining). Second corollary, Shattered Plains were Shattered when Odium made failed attempt to form tenth Unmade from the spren of Stormseat (possibly due to Honor intervening).

WoA chapter 52. Vin comments that spikeway reduced ~1 hour carriage ride to ~10 minute trip. And I would note that most fauna/flora of Scadrial at the time is...in poor shape, so assuming the carriage was making 10 mph is generous. (Notably here Brandon mentions that wagon usually makes 1-2 mph, https://wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?query=horse ). I don't doubt the simulation itself, more its assumptions. BTW what did you use to simulate? Depends on how packed the dirt would be I think she followed some road no? If so, it would be kept mostly ash-free I would assume. But I am letting this point go, it would be unlikely for the horseshoe to break.

Fair enough! Well if it behaves like shear thickening fluid, then the impact force will be greater, due to it thickening. And these are old (probably not very well made, considering they are taken from Skaa) likely iron horseshoes. So repeated impacts at these speeds could cause stress fractures. But fair enough, we don't know enough about them, and it would be an edge case. However, the speed is still too great compared to the description. Her improvised travel method won't be faster than a spikeway, designed for that purpose.
-
Great animation, that is about how I imagined it! One thing I will note is that at least based on WoA, Vin is not pulling the horseshoes down, she pulls them from the ground, and lets them fly over her until they fall (chapter 52 for reference). Though maybe in HoA she enhanced the method a bit? I don't have that on hand. For the numerical details, I think the equations are off a bit, as 100 m/s for the horseshoe sounds like way too much speed, I don't think they would survive even dozen of such impacts, and they would be driven way too deep in muddy ground. Additionally, 80 mph is also too fast, as spikeway lets Mistborn travel ~6x as fast as carriage ride, and carriages moved between 5-10 mph. So the forces probably need to be towned-down a bit.

I always saw Identity as effectively a "tag" on Investiture, or perhaps like anti-gens on cells. Something that let's Investiture that comprises particular spiritweb recognize what is still 'it'. I don't think Identity is emergent property of Connections, I think they are two different fundamental concepts, though heavily related. If you can assume different Identity, you can also assume different Connections (e.g. tapping foreign metalminds or Investiture), and having different Connections will to some level alter your Identity (tapping Connection to alter languages/accents).

You call Nale sane? Really? His insanity is in that he is obsessed with obeying letter of the law to exclusion of all else, and feels nothing. He is more insane than Kalak who at least acknowledges he is in bad mental state. Nale has to be practically beaten over the head with Everstorm to understand he made a mistake in hunting down Radiants...and immediately makes another in joining Odium through legal loophole. Nale as he used to be (as we see in flashback/vision) advocated for mercy and flexibility, since law is not moral in and of itself. He would hate the man he has become. As such, no Nahel bond won't heal Heralds. If anything it might make them worse, if the spren encourage their worst tendencies (i.e. Highspren encouraging Nale to be hyper literal).

As expected fabrials are not Invested enough to resist Allomancy (at least the Lerasium-level kind). Navani cannot leave Tower for long, again as expected. Perhaps with higher Oaths the range/time interval will get larger, like for other Orders. Towerlight leaks faster than Stormlight, that is interesting. Or is it that it can exist only within certain distance of Tower and it evaporates outside of it?

He did let her live, but he did do it of his own volition, or was he overpowered by Intent after a struggle? Because the quote seems to me that this was the division point, Rayse the Vessel did not like being challenged, but Odium the Power likes challenge when it comes from passion. So tried to suppress Passion of others, and the Power did not like it. He acted more in line of Dominion if anything. I am not sure if I understand this. You mean that Rayse was so suffused, that trying to act against Intent of Odium was creating inner conflict in effect? But Taravangian is not there yet?
-
I don't think the Broken One is Odium, I think it is specifically Taravangian as Odium. It would not apply previously. I thought about this one as well, but I am unsure how to fit it, especially the ending of it "gain us further breath to draw. "
-
Rayse had issues mainly when trying to restrain Passions of his subordinates, which started differing from his (e.g. with Sja-Anat), and when trying to be careful and measured. Taravangian was always all passion, when it came to his motivations. So as long as Taravangian acts to further Passionate conflicts, than Shard will be ok with him. Now, within days of Ascending he is already making enemies because of how passionate he is, even when it would make sense to pretend before Cultivation.
-
I think the schism is actually very different. For ROdium, the schism was between Shard and Vessel (e.g. Rayse suppressing his subordinates Passions and Anger, see the Interlude with Sja-Anat). For TOdium, the schism is within the Vessel, it is Taravangian who is Divided into Logical and Emotional parts. And based on what Taravangian feels, I think Rayse was closer than we realized when framing Odium as Passion. In this very Interlude, Taravangian feels not just hatred, but also suffering and anger of people in Cosmere. Hatred might be dominant, but other emotions/Passions are clearly there. Even when Ascending, Taravangian described it as so other emotions are there. It's just that Hatred underlies it all (like we see here, when Taravangian readily finds reason to hate other Shards).
-
In light of the recent Interlude preview (https://reactormag.com/read-wind-and-truth-by-brandon-sanderson-interludes-1-and-2/), I think the Deathrattle is about Taravangian and Odium. Specifically, he calls him-self now The Divided One, which is not so far from the Broken One. And is clearly set on ruling the planet first, and Cosmere then. Side-note: From his interaction with Cultivation (and his Divided nature) it seems to me that my theory on "Shards 2.0" got some support, in that the modification Cultivation did on Taravangian persisted now that he is Vessel, and seems intended to let him handle the power 'safely'.

Favorite and Least Favorite Forms of Investiture (to Read)
therunner replied to EdgedancerJacob's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Right now my favourite is Surgebinding, because of how it dove-tails character development and challenges with magical powers. Least favourite is Soul Stamps, after TLM. There it felt kinda cheap, suddenly there are universal stamps, stamps to turn into Elantrian. It felt Deus Ex Machina to me. I did enjoy it in Emperor's Soul, so hopefully it will be treated "better" (from my subjective standpoint) again in the future. -
Wouldn't that just be savantism? Your spiritweb permeated by the power. I would say it would somewhat boost their power, but there would be negative consequences as well. Snapping is more complicated than just this I think.
-
Fair, not to mention that Szeth currently lacks Plate, putting him at rather significant disadvantage even if he was mentally doing well. I wonder what this discussion will look like after we finish the full book.

I am currently in the middle of my re-read prior to WaT, and one thing strikes me as quite odd, in light of Odium's plans. From Rayse we know he intended Roshar to serve as 'training grounds' for his armies to conquer Cosmere, and Taravangian seems quite likely to want to follow at least broadly similar goal. In light of that, Vorinist conception of afterlife as 'fighting to conquer Tranquiline Halls/Heavens' seems oddly similar to those stated plans. Sure, it is supposed to by alongside Heralds, but that could be taken as cover for Fused (both are Cognitive Shadows, so similar in nature). Is it possible that Vorinism was partially corrupted by Odium/influenced by futuresight, and 'fight in afterlife to conquer Tranquilline Halls/Heaven' is just a cover/interpretation of fighting to conquer Cosmere?

The truth behind vorinism and the future of the knights Radiant
therunner replied to bmcclure7's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I like the idea! I am on my re-read, and it did strike me as odd how Vorinist afterlife is supposed to function (fighting to conquer Tranquilline Halls alongside Heralds), and this would explain that, since a lot of Vorinism is based on how Radiants were perceived.
