"I don't have much money, actually. I've been living off what I can find in the forest up to this point. It hasn't been exactly appealing, but I'm still alive and relatively healthy, so I can't complain too much." Kieran glanced at Rose warily.

Brother Sparrow pulled a thin blanket out of his satchel and covered Vespyr and Janice with it, then began slowly rowing towards the mainland.

Brother Sparrow ensured the sedative had begun to take effect, then released Janice's hand, letting the pain leave him. He moved over to Vespyr's unconscious form and gently picked them up, carrying them slowly over to the boat.

"I cannot force you to take it if you do not wish to, but know that the pain will return if I let go of you. Please make your choice swiftly; I do not wish to leave your companion in the rain any longer than necessary."

Brother Sparrow rummaged in his satchel for a moment before drawing out a vial filled with viscous green liquid and handing it to Janice. "Drink this. It will dull your pain and allow you to sleep more easily. I shall fetch your companion in a moment."

"I see. I shall do my best to reunite the two of you as soon as I am able, but for now I think it prudent to get you and your companion inside and warm."

"I am sorry, child, but I do not understand. This place, Cadenza, is it near here?"

Brother Sparrow kneels down to the girl's eye level. "What is it, child? I will be of any help I can manage."

"Very good. Please keep hold of my hand, or the pain will return to you. I regret that I cannot help you more right now, but I will be of more assistance once we reach proper land." Brother Sparrow points to the small sailboat tied to the island and begins slowly walking Janice towards it.

"Can you stand, child? I do not mind carrying you, but it will be slower, and your companion appears to be ailing as well."

Brother Sparrow took a deep breath, then opened himself to the child's pain. He had been aware of it before, but the intensity of the agony still shocked and horrified him. What manner of monster could do this to another living thing, let alone a child? He closed off the link, then touched her gently on the wrist and drained as much of her pain and exhaustion as he could.

"Child, I am going to attempt something that should be of help. It may be uncomfortable, but I promise it will not harm you. Are you willing?"

Brother Sparrow roused himself from meditation as rain began to fall, allowing his senses to return. The storm had been approaching all day, and it had finally hit the tiny rock he sometimes visited. As he stretched himself and opened his eyes, he noticed two other shapes fall out of the storm: a small form that must have been a child, and someone larger. Both slowly drifted down to the surface of the island, collapsing. He hurried over to check on the soaked forms. "Are you all right? You must be very wet and cold. I can take you back to the mainland, if you are too tired to continue."
