  1. Dodging would have been impractical, so Jasper simply let the knife clatter off his mail. He was slightly slow in avoiding the second strike, taking a shallow cut on his left shin. As the man tried to sweep him, he planted himself firmly and absorbed the hit.
  2. "No one can deserve forgiveness. It is a question of the will to give it. As for righting what you have done wrong, the only person you have anything to prove to is yourself. The only person you are a burden to is you. Are you willing to shoulder that burden, or will you live out your life seeking to avoid it?"
  3. Jasper stepped back and to the left, exposing Darrin's side, but made no move to strike.
  4. Jasper settled into a defensive stance, inviting Darrin to make the first move.
  5. "That's a shame." Jasper flipped the knife up into the air, then instantly grabbed another one from his other sleeve and hurled it pommel-first.
  6. Jasper slid a longer, heavier knife out of his sleeve and began closing in on his target. "Are you sure you want to do things like this? I don't like roughing up strangers."
  7. The arrow glanced off Jasper's shoulder, piercing his tunic before skittering off his mail shirt. Ignoring the ache, he dropped to the ground, positioning himself directly below the ledge to avoid any further shots, and waited.
  8. Jasper tailed the assassin, clambering down towards the ground with alarming speed.
  9. "I'm afraid that's a deal I can't take. Please, do come quietly. This is quite a nice place, and I'd hate to get blood on it." Jasper whipped off his cloak as he jumped again, briefly concealing his location.
  10. Brother Sparrow surreptitiously broke off from the group and moved over to stand near Vespyr. "Did you truly believe that I would not have sheltered you, had I known the truth? I am no judge of men. All I ask is that you do what you can to redress your actions, rather than running away from their consequences. Janice seems to bear no ill will towards you, but I have little doubt that the others do. I would suggest that you ask for their forgiveness, or at least how you might earn it. I will not keep you here against your will, but your condition is fragile, and I fear that you may... fall back into old habits."
  11. Jasper noted the burst of motion, tracking it down to a window. As they stopped momentarily, he drew, sighted and threw a knife in one fluid motion. He then leapt off the roof towards a lower ledge, trying to cut them off.
  12. "I feel that it may be simpler to show you. Do you promise that you and your friends will not enact violence upon anyone on this island?"
  13. "You may refer to me as Brother Sparrow."
  14. "...I see. I had not been aware of this."
  15. Brother Sparrow belatedly walked out into the grass. He noted the various people clustered around Janice before addressing them. "Greetings. I assume you are Janice's friends. It is a pleasure to meet all of you. This house is open to you for as long as you have need of it, though I imagine you are eager to be on your way. Have you met Vespyr previously?"
  16. Brother Sparrow wordlessly cleared away the shards before sitting down near Janice. "You seem troubled, child. Might I be of assistance?"
  17. "Ask yourself why you're so afraid of trusting us. Better yet, if you despise all of us so much, ask yourself why you haven't just left. Nobody's keeping you here." Kieran moves closer to Rose and whispers, "You might not trust me. You might even hate me. But deep down, you stay because you know that being alone is worse."
  18. "You're projecting. Most of them actually like you, at least a little."
