Yep, same steps for the logos.

Thanks!! I was practicing with the Sponge brush and I was able to apply it well.:D It took me hours to get the practice, but now I already made a couple of covers with this style.

Interesting, I've just got giant red rectangles in my Arcanum Unbounded eBook in their place, lol. Wonder if AU just doesn't have them for some reason, or if Amazon screwed the book up somehow. Checking the free sample of the Secret History eBook, yeah, I see the symbols you're talking about.

Well, the AU in most formats that I have seen, it brings those symbols of the SH parts but in black. In red there is only the ebook published by Dragonsteel, because most Dragonsteel books have those details in color (red for the SH ebook, and Era I in leatherbound; blue for the Dawnshard and TWoK Prime ebooks, and TWoK in leatherbound, for example).

Oooh, that looks cool, and is simple enough that it should look good. It's late where I am atm, but tomorrow I'll try adding it to the Final Empire Prime cover and see how it turns out.

Where'd you see it labeled the Kredik Shaw symbol, btw? Is it referenced as such in the book or something? (Not doubting that that's what it is, it certainly looks like it'd fit Kredik Shaw, just curious since I know I wouldn't recognize most of these symbols if not for seeing the names on the Coppermind )

On the Luthadel map, Kredik Shaw appears with the same symbol. The color map and the old map.

I'm excited to see the TFE Prime cover with the Kredik Shaw logo!:D

    Thanks!

I believe what I did for the effects was:

    • Add the text with color #cbbc92
    • Add a gradient with that and #968766
    • Use the Sponge 01 brush with #968766 to add texture (or I think that was it, anyway; might've been Sponge 02 or one of the Cell brushes, it's been a bit and they all look sort of similar)

Thanks! I'm going to give it a try and when I have some done in Spanish I'll upload them here at the Shard.

And with the logos, I also put it with the color and apply the gradient and sponge?

I'm afraid my copy of AU doesn't seem to have icons at the start of each part, just the chapter icons, are you able to grab an image anywhere? A Kredik Shaw icon would probably fit pretty well, since it's the Final Empire and all, lol.

What is the format of your AU? If it's paperback, it's probably like the Cosmere image, which is only on hardcover. And I got the logo from my Secret History e-book, it's red and in GIF format. The bad thing about these logos in GIF is that they go crazy and the background turns black hahaha, but I think that converting them in GIMP to PNG format, it could work better and then color it.

I find it strange that it is not in the Coppermind, because there is all the Steel Alphabet and almost all the logos that Isaac makes.

    The logo:

Used the ancient atium and lerasium symbols to do Mistborn Prime and Final Empire Prime, though just having a single chapter of each makes the necessity questionable.

Hey! The new covers are really beautiful. I've been using GIMP for days, and I would like to know if you could tell me how you put the texture to the logos and text, because they look the same as the TWoK Prime cover, and I would like to try to make these covers in Spanish, although probably none of the Sanderson Curiosities will be translated in the future.

Also, even though I haven't read The Final Empire Prime, would putting the Kredik Shaw symbol on it would be in context? It is precisely the symbol of the second part of Secret History: "Well".

The Set is being set up for Era 3.

I know, I know. Although I really feel like The Set is kind of lazy as villains (or maybe I'm just thinking of Mr. Suit and Telsin), but I think the organization can look a whole lot more interesting and credible if we see a little bit of Trell and his main lackeys, to make him credible as a threat to Harmony in the future in Era 3. (Because after all, Harmony's greatest enemy is having two diametrically opposed Shards, but overall it should be easy for him to take down an... ¿avatar?, of another Shard, as maybe it is Trell)

Alright, what is everyone looking forward to in The Lost Metal?

I would definitely like to see a longer appearance from Hoid, at least like Warbreaker's. Also, I wish that at least The Set is totally defeated, it seems to me quite lazy compared to the secret organizations of Roshar and the entire Cosmere. Ahhh, and obviously Mr. There's always another secret.

The truth is that despite so many years of waiting with TLM, I find it much more exciting with all the information we have had with the latest Cosmere books. Also, hopefully TLM can also get Isaac to write Nazh and Nicki Sauvage novel haha

Weird theory based on a discussion over in the Mistborn section:

Sixteen is Spook in a chromium bubble biding his time for Era2...

    Flame on!

I think it couldn't be Spook. If he is alive, I firmly believe that he is the second in command of the Ghostbloods, so the Shallan / Mraize issue then should not make any sense if in the same building you have a VERY more important member of the organization

  7. Personally, I think the back half of SA will always be in Roshar, but that it will have constant references to the Cosmere (as in RoW), more constant appearances from worldhoppers and that some main characters are at least a little bit aware of the Cosmere

    probably not

    but what if

Well, Kelsier is looking to get out of Scadrial, but that doesn't take away from the fact that one of his goals is to protect the planet

There is no reason to believe Kelsier is any more insane now than he was 350 odd years ago. His actions thus far have been entirely in character for the man we knew.

Exactly. At this point in time, Kelsier is still pretty much the same as we've seen on TFE and SH, there would be no reason to think that he's unstable and crazy for being a CS (like the Fused and Heralds) since he's basically only lived 5% of the time that the Heralds and Fused

  9. Yesterday I finished my rereading of RoW, so I have some opinions:

    1. The first part was too tedious and feels disconnected from the rest of the book, but I still find it necessary.

    2. Adolin has become one of the best characters in SA, I enjoyed his PoV much more than Shallan's.

    3. Brandon owes us in the fifth book, plus participation from Dalinar, Szeth, Jasnah, Lift and Rysn.

    4. The book lacked comic moments, even being the book where Wit appears the most.

    5. Chapter 111 should have been separated into two chapters, one with what happened in Urithiru and the other with what happened in Dalinar and Ishar. It was anticlimactic to have both intertwined in a single chapter, both chapters being action, and not laid back like 116, for example.

    6. Mraize's actions do not make Thaidakar a villain. Thaidakar is a questionable person, but Mraize is simply despicable and is definitely the person that Thaidakar would punch, but it turns out that he is one of his lackeys.

    7. Dalinar has heard the term "Adonalsium" since WoK thanks to Wit, Stormfather, maybe Ash, and now Ishar. But still, it never asks what or who Adonalsium is, and it's frustrating because anyone would react with curiosity and ask what that term means.

    8. Zahel totally disappeared after his conversation with Kaladin. I just hope he and Azure appear in the fifth book.

Likewise, I loved the book and sometimes how heavy it is, and it was OB, we can justify it with that they are the middle point of the saga. WoR still seems like the best of the 4, but I'm sure the fifth will be the best

That WoB is extremely loosely worded.

Oh, I think I had a Mandela effect, the truth is that I could swear that I saw in the Coppermind or Arcanum, a pact or alliance between Bavadin and Rayse, but I see that it is not like that and that the WoB that I believed never existed. What a shame):

Still, I do think it is possible that Odium and Autonomy have at least respected and helped each other before, but I apologize for the blunder with the alleged deal between the two Shards.

  11. Ok, I have no proof of this hypothesis. But seeing the fact that Axindweth is from Terris (Scadrial), and she is the one who brings the voidspren to Roshar from Braize, it makes me think that she is a member of the Set, or that she is someone important in Trell's plans.

We know that Odium and Autonomy have a "pact", being possible allies, so it would not be strange that Trell is an avatar of Autonomy, who feels admiration for Odium (like Patji in Oathbringer's letter) and seeks the return of the Desolations to favor Odium.

It is not a well-crafted hypothesis, but it is what I think it might be. And furthermore, I also think that the Set itself is a reaction to the Ghostbloods, being rival organizations, like the Ghostbloods and Sons of Honor.

    What do you think?

  12. I don't know if it has already been discussed here but, by rereading Mistborn and Stormlight simultaneously, I started to think of a hypothetical structure of Mistborn Era I with flashbacks.

In Stormlight, each book has a POV character for the flashbacks (Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Venli / Eshonai, Szeth in the fifth book), so if Mistborn had had them I think they could be like this:

    1. The Final Empire: Definitely Kelsier. Vin is undoubtedly the protagonist, but Kell's presence is the other big part of the book. The first flashback could be the murder of his mother, while the next ones could be her relationship with Mare; how he became Luthadel's biggest thief, then the botched robbery at Kredik Shaw; the Pits of Hathsin, the death of Mare and Kelsier breaking as Mistborn; and as a final flashback, the story we know as The Eleventh Metal.

    2. The Well of Ascension: Here these could be from Sazed (if they were in the third book, it would be indirectly spoiler, I think). He has a very interesting past, with which we could see Terris, with the Synod and the social structure of him; We could see Tindwyl as a young, and why Terris society considered Sazed a rebel, and later the time when he met Mare and Kelsier, and he started working in the underworld of Luthadel.

    3. The Hero of Ages: Here these would definitely be Vin's. We could see how her mother murdered her sister; his years with Reen from city to city, and how abusive he was; We could also see how Reen left her, and I really don't know what else it could be, because we don't know much more about Vin's past, and also she was very young in the first book.

I haven't thought about what it would be like if Mistborn had interludes because there really isn't much talk about the Final Empire other than Luthadel and the other cities we saw in era I. But hey, tell me what you think about this topic!

    Psychopath ≠ evil.

It is not meant to be merely an insult casually thrown out to say that someone has done terrible or crazy things, and the term is not being used that way in reference to Kelsier (well, presumably not by the author).

I’m pretty sure @Kingsdaughter613 can explain exactly why finding Kelsier admirable doesn’t mean he’s exempted from being called out for what he is, and vice versa. And this deserves a more in-depth, textually-supported response.

But for now, psychopathy (Wikipedia) is:

That is Kelsier. That is not the other characters you mention.

Hatred does not make Kelsier or anybody else a psychopath. The human incapacity to empathize with much more than a handful of people is normal. So is the brain’s heuristic tendency to divide the world into us and them, and then dehumanize the “them” to conserve thinking and empathy bandwidth.

In their extremes, these are all far from admirable qualities; but like the psychopathy-adjacent ability to detach from others’ pain enough to perform surgery, they are adaptive in minimal to moderate amounts within the appropriate context.

So, listing examples of other characters behaving like jerks, just like normal people, neither makes them villains nor makes Kelsier less of a potentially-diagnosable psychopath. Even comparing Kelsier’s mass murders to Dalinar’s war crimes doesn’t change anything, since psychopathy is a personality disorder and not a label earned by evil deeds.

Kelsier is a psychopath. Now, if you mean only to claim that he is not the evil person or villain he is perceived or portrayed as, that’s a different argument altogether.

I know that Kelsier fits a couple of symptoms of psychopathy, but there are other symptoms that define psychopathy like an inability to love, a lack of empathy, and no guilt for your actions.

I recently finished my rereading of Mistborn Era 1, Eleventh Metal, and Secret History. I looked at the things I said in the main post, like love for his mother Marsh, her crew and especially Mare. If Kelsier were a psychopath, he would never have loved any of them, he would not have hated the nobility for taking his mother from him, he would not have suffered Mare's death, he would not have felt guilt for his actions, he would not have empathized with the Skaa or the Southerners, he would not have hurt the deaths of his friends or avenged himself on the nobles and the Lord Ruler. People use Kelsier's hatred towards the nobles as an argument to say that he is a psychopath, but nobody remembers that this hatred is thanks to the death of his mother and years later Mare, it is exactly the same as Kaladin's hatred towards the lighteyes for the deaths of Tien and the others whom he could not protect, only that Kelsier constantly took revenge.

What I'm going to is that in Cosmere, there are other characters who are closer to being psychopaths than Kelsier, for example Dalinar until his visit to the valley (those were not just "war crimes" as you say, it was a constant genocide by decades, with which Dalinar ALWAYS enjoyed the bloodbath and never felt remorse for it all until he killed Evi. Dalinar carries more murders on his back than any other main character in Cosmere, and by far), Moash after switching to side of Odium; Nale, and probably Sadeas and Straff Venture.

Really, I think Kelsier is not a good person but he is trying to be, he is probably a narcissist but NOT a psychopath, based on the fact that Kelsier can love, feels pain and sadness, loves his friends, took revenge on the nobles and the Lord Ruler For taking away his mother and Mare (whom he really loved, and also his mother), he feels guilty for his actions and has empathy with people.

  15. This is the first post this long that I make here, and it probably sounds weird, but it's because I'm using Google Translate and my language is Spanish.
Well, I've seen that for quite some time now, Kelsier has earned a reputation as a "psychopath" and a "villain", even affirmed by Brandon himself. But being more objective, I feel like that reputation is undeserved, although I agree that Kell is self-centered and an anti-hero because of his circumstances.

Getting to the point, some examples of why Kelsier can't be a psychopath are:

    * He hates nobles (as Marsh hates obligators) because they murdered his mother when they found out that she was a skaa and not a noble. Killing so many nobles may have been ruthless, but really Kelsier had that hatred because he loved his mother, and it's no different than Kaladin's hatred for lighteyes due to the death of Tien and the people he couldn't protect, and Kal is not a psychopath for it (he suffers from depression but it is something radically different).

    * Kelsier really loves his friends, he is uncompromisingly loyal and literally went to his death to protect his friends (Spook, OreSeur and the other prisoners).

    * Kelsier really loved Mare, he always says it and it shows that it is true, an example of this is the beginning of Eleventh Metal (destroyed by her death) and then in a couple of conversations with Vin at TFE. A psychopath CANNOT love, and when he is with someone, he does it for convenience and thanks to manipulations, since he has a total lack of empathy.

    * Kelsier's powers as Mistborn appeared from the pain of Mare's death.

    * Kelsier really admires good people, according to WoB, although Kell is not quite a good person, but none of that means he is a psychopath and Dark Lord.

    * Kelsier feels guilty when Vin was nearly killed by the inquisitors at Kredik Shaw, and a psychopath cannot feel guilty for his actions.

    * Kelsier feels pain and sadness for the deaths of the army in TFE, then for the deaths of Dockson and Elend, and also for the comments of Ati before going to the Ire fortress. In particular, he feels pain, sadness and anger over the supposed death of Marsh, whom he loved for being his brother despite their differences (situation and subsequent revenge similar to what happened with his mother).

    * After Vin was nearly killed by the inquisitors at Kredik Shaw, we are emphasized a million times that Kelsier became a much more thoughtful and better person, reaching the point where he did not kill nobles indiscriminately, saved the Elend's life and after Secret History, we see that he stopped having that hatred with which he killed nobles.

    * According to Vin, when she and Kelsier visited skaa in the evenings, she felt that Kelsier genuinely loved and cared about skaa, and she probably did with Southerners as well.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Brandon's work and in general I agree and impressed with the construction of his characters, but Kelsier's bad reputation seems undeserved, and besides, there are main characters with actions that are as questionable or more despicable than Kelsier, for example:

    * Wax feels no guilt in killing criminals.

    * Kaladin had a fierce hatred of lighteyes, which he overcame, just as Kelsier largely overcame his hatred of nobles.

    * Vin didn't feel guilty about killing koloss and inquisitors (although she did feel guilty about doing extreme killings, like the one she did with Zane), but herself, she was also an assassin.

    * Elend felt no guilt in killing enemy koloss, inquisitors, and soldiers, plus in HoA he became a (but necessary) tyrant.

    * Marsh hated obligors in a similar way to Kelsier with nobles (said by Marsh himself in TFE).

    * And finally the most questionable of all, Dalinar. He was literally a tyrant and genocidal, he killed thousands and thousands of people to unify Aletzkhar, even burning an entire city, killing hundreds of people in each battle and enjoying the bloodbath (The Thrill is not an excuse, it is not like Ruin controlling the inquisitors, but rather like emotional allomancy, nothing to do with a control of people but igniting something they already feel). Dalinar is a great character but Kelsier did not kill a small part of what Dalinar did, who is not a psychopath and is redeemed despite carrying thousands and thousands of deaths on his back.

I also don't think that the fact that Kelsier is a Cognitive Shadow makes him a villain, evil, or psychopath. He's only been around for 300 years and in the comfort of Scadrial. While, that the Cognitive Shadows that are crazy are the Heralds due to THOUSANDS of years of torture in Braize, in addition to that they have been 7000 years old, and Kelsier only 300 which is only about 5% that the Heralds.

I really like that Kelsier is the leader of the Ghostbloods, I think his crew was the antecedent of the organization, and that after the Catacendre and Spook bringing Kelsier to the Physical Realm with hemalurgy, the first Ghostbloods were Kell and Spook as leaders, Ham, Breeze, Allrianne, Beldre, Cett, Noorden, maybe Yomen and Marsh, and probably Felt. (Also, that would leave us with that The Set is a reaction to the Ghostbloods, and that in Scadrial both organizations have a feud like the Ghostbloods with the Sons of Honor in Roshar). The problem is that Mraize is despicable and that if Kelsier were in Roshar, the Ghostbloods would be less questionable, but hey, Mraize's actions DO NOT DEFINE the entire organization or Kelsier himself.

In closing, I thank those who have read this far. I think Kelsier is seen as "evil" right now but remember that the information is given by two really questionable people and they are probably worse than Kelsier: Kalak and our beloved Cephandrius. I hope Brandon amazes us with Kelsier's handling of Stormlight 5, Wax and Wayne 4, and Mistborn Era 3, and that he applies the Lord of the Scars mantra.

    There is always another secret.

I know, and it seems to me that it makes sense even up to Oathbringer, but with all the new information from RoW, it makes me quite doubtful and I honestly believe that Odium is almost as invested in the Rosharan system as Honor and Cultivation. The biggest clue to this may be the Rhythms, but we'll see what Brandon will do with all of this in the future

Odium doesn't like to invest himself, so if he can corrupt other shards power he will.

Personally, I find that "Odium does not want to invest" incoherent, since it is literally divided into 9 Unmade (very powerful spren, although not as powerful as Stormfather), it grants voidlight and its abilities to the Fused, it has thousands of voidspren, the Raysium like god metal, and that its rhythm is one of the rhythms of Roshar, so invested it is there. I have always thought that the Shards of Roshar are more divided (spren, lights, Heralds of Honor) than others such as Endowment or Harmony

  18. The conversation between Kalak and Shallan should have come out where he tells her all about the Ghostblood, Kelsier, other planets of the Cosmere and the seon. I found it anticlimactic that this conversation was not shown, but I understand that it adds more emotion to the final conversation between Shallan and Mraize

Very mild spoilers for The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance

It is mentioned that the Parshendi had multiple Shardbearer, but during the War of Reckoning they lost all but one.
At least one of them was defeated by Dalinar, but do we know more? Either from the text or from other sources?

P.S. I am 300+ pages in to Rhythm of War and I don't expect to be illuminated by the rest of the book in this matter, but if there's an answer for this in that book just throw me a RAFO

It's definitely a RAFO thanks to RoW!

  20. Hey! I don't know if this post corresponds to this forum, but I wanted to know if anyone here knows the typeface that Brandon's name uses on the covers of his books in Spain, published by NOVA. I make covers in Spanish (because it's my language) to spend my free time, and although I have a PNG with the "Brandon Sanderson" that the Spanish covers have, it is not the same as having the font / typography.

I have searched in Whatfontis and got two similar fonts: "Parkson Personal Use" and "Equal Sand Demo" but I tried both and they are not the same used by Spanish covers. If anyone knows what source it is, or can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I also know of some fonts used by American and British covers, in case anyone wants to know.

The attached image is the Spanish cover of The Hero of Ages, thanks!

  21. At the end of RoW, Taravangian ascends to Odium and inherits quite a few memories and information from Rayse. Well, I don't know if it's Brandon's favoritism towards TOdium, but I don't understand why Taravangian inherits so much information, but Kelsier, Vin and Sazed don't inherit any information from each other's pre-Preservation vessel (Kelsier from Leras, Vin from Kelsier and Sazed from Vin). And the same case of Sazed with Ati.

Maybe Kelsier doesn't inherit any information from Leras because the latter was slowly dying, but Vin should have inherited Kelsier's short-time memories as Preservation as well as Taravangian from Odium, and Sazed should have inherited Vin's memories and Ati when ascending, but it was not like that and it gives me a feeling of unevenness between the shards, despite the fact that Odium is somewhat hurt by his battles in the Cosmere, but Preservation and Ruin are intact despite the deaths of their original vessels.
