  1. Caden dug a thumb into his other palm, as if massaging a sore spot. "No, not anymore."
  2. Caden coughed, trying to hide his surprise at the statement. "I assure you, I-" He cleared his throat, "I have no intention of trying."
  3. "Right," he said as he went on to one of the go-to questions that he had learned long ago. "Do you have any family?" He almost winced, feeling how stupid it was to ask the Raveness herself such a question.
  4. Caden didn't speak, nothing coming to mind that would further the conversation.
  5. "It is, yes. It's been through a lot," he paused for a brief moment, considering something that he ultimately decided against sharing.
  6. Caden turned to peer out the small window that was at his side, "I have my steward."
  7. "No, I would rather not." Caden tried to move back, but the door blocked his attempts. He still found Riva's eyes unnerving, and the way she described her "art" gave Caden the distinct impression that he did not want that happening to him, ever. When he realized he couldn't back up any farther, he raised his arm to block Riva's attempts to get closer, still wanting there to be space between the two of them.
  8. Caden growled slightly in a skeptical manner, "I prefer to face death on the battlefield, where I can stand against her on my own terms."
  9. Caden didn't speak, unsure what to say in response at first. To his surprise, a question formed on his lips."I thought as Raveness you were to kill those that the King sends to you, not keep them alive longer."
  10. Caden was silent for a moment, evidently thinking. When he finally broke the silence, he did so slowly, as if hesitant to ask. "How many have you killed?"
  11. "Slaughtering th-" Caden cut himself off, realizing the stipulation that was added on. He cleared his throat again, staying silent for a brief moment. "All I do is in the King's name, nothing else matters."
  12. Caden's mind actually started to race, trying to think of something to ask her. He didn't know why he suddenly cared, but the need to ask something in return was overpowering. He cleared his throat, "where are you from?"
  13. Caden's posture suddenly became defensive, or as defensive as it could get in the tight confines. "What do you expect of me? I'm the King's general, what else is there?"
  14. Caden rolled his shoulders, "why do I need to say more?"
  15. "This isn't even my carriage." Caden took his hand back, not out of disgust, but more of a matter of principle.
  16. Caden raised an eyebrow at the hand, wondering what game the woman, Riva, was trying to play with him. He didn't want to play along, but the thought of the agonizingly long carriage ride with this woman badgering him was enough. He didn't move to shake her hand, "Caden Praetorium."
  17. Caden shifted in his seat as best he could, deciding that he preferred it when the Raveness wore her mask. "I- You are the Raveness, and that's all that I need to say."
  18. Caden sighed when he saw how little room was left in the carriage, wishing for a proper horse to ride back on instead. He lifted himself through the carriage door and tried to sit as far from the Raveness as he could. Through his best efforts, he didn't ended up hip to hip with his new wife, even though it was quite close. He eyed the door, knowing that as soon as it closed, he would be pushed right up against that woman. He didn't know how she managed to look so comfortable as she asked his question, causing him to release a short snarl of annoyance. It was only then that he remembered her statement, "I don't think that's necessary."
  19. Caden held his tongue, wishing that he could instead simply ride horseback to his estate, or just stay at the King's palace than ride in a stuffy carriage with that woman all the way back to his lands. He sighed, seeing one of the King's own carriages pull out towards them. He assumed it was for one of the King's carriage rides that he was prone to, as it looked to be designed for one person. Caden glanced at the coachmen in shock as the vehicle stopped before the two of them. The coachmen looked towards the two, "the King sends his best wishes, as master Praetorium didn't have any of his carriages here for us to ready."
  20. "We'll arrive late into the night, it's on the edge of the King's domain." Caden didn't even bother to look at the Raveness, instead fixating on the direction that he thought the carriage would arrive from.
  21. Caden looked away, trying to identify if their carriage was approaching.
  22. Caden growled at the nudge, "twice that if you keep nagging me."
  23. Caden sneered, "I've already told you all you need to know."
  24. Caden growled at Riva's choice of words, wanting to tear his arm out of his grip. However, he decided to allow the witch her moment, the King may have been willing to make an example of her powerless position when compared to that of the throne, but Caden had none of that authority.
