  1. "So the two most feared people in the entire kingdom should attend a ball together? I'll admit that it would be satisfying to see how the others react, but dancing with me is not an option."
  2. "Why would you want that so badly?" he asked as he looked towards her curiously, "above all, why would you want me to go with you? I don't even dance."
  3. "I was thinking," he looked at the table for a moment, "since the King has required that a Praetorium goes to a ball, you could go for me."
  4. "Apologize to the chef when he comes, not to me."
  5. "I normally wait for him to prepare the food for me," Caden looked back at Riva, "he definitely wasn't ready for us, then."
  6. "Yes, he's been cooking quickly tonight." He looked towards the door, "you did tell him when to prepare dinner, right?"
  7. Caden squinted his eyes at Riva, "are we going to the same balls?"
  8. Caden shrugged, "I don't see why. They're filled with pompous idiots wasting everyone's time and money."
  9. "They aren't all that bad, I prefer being there than at one of those accursed balls."
  10. 'If you've only been surrounded by those who you are torturing, then that doesn't exactly surprise me."
  11. Caden nodded, "it's been a strange night." He looked at her quizzically, "are you alright?"
  12. "And yours sparkle like the stars, but pierce like the sun." He paused for a moment, "my point was going to be that I hadn't brought that up, but I seem to have undone that argument, so I'm not sure what to say."
  13. "It is not how I would have tried to make conversation, especially since there's not much to my eyes, anyways." Caden looked away, "I don't know why you'd even bring them up."
  14. "Okay," he raised an eyebrow but he didn't break eye contact. "Why mention them?"
  15. "That's why there's the chef," he gestured towards the door that led to the kitchen.
  16. He shook his head, "I did at one point, but years eating whatever they serve you in the field changed that." He tilted his head, "that's partially true."
  17. "I don't know how familiar you are with my eating habits," he looked away while she wiped away her tears before meeting her eyes again. "But I eat whatever the chef places in front of me."
  18. Caden sighed, briefly taken aback by her apparent sincerity. "You have me here and now, Riva." He leaned forward, "I won't lie, I don't want to be here. But I will stay for the meal, and I will let you try to convince me that this isn't a waste of my time. Now, if we were to do one of those 'dinner dates,' what would I talk about?" He wanted to hate how intrigued he was by this conversation, but he knew he wouldn't truly make up his mind until the night was done.
  19. "And what would that entail? Forcing myself to go to these dinners? Giving you gifts as well?"
  20. "Then more importantly," he leaned back into his chair, "what are you expecting from me?"
  21. He watched her critically, "and who is 'just you?' If the 'you' I've known all these years should be completely disregarded, if you are to be believed, then what should I be anticipating?"
  22. "It does if I'm the person you're trying to build that relationship with." He leaned forward, "I've gone all my life without something like this getting in my way, why should I change that now?"
  23. He furrowed his eyebrows, "what would you do in such a relationship that would justify trying so hard to have one?"
  24. "Why do you think that?" He nodded at her movement before taking another sip, "I have those I serve, and those who serve me. Why should I need more?"
  25. "Why would my lack of staff indicate that I'm lonely?" Caden picked up the cup, but didn't move to toast. "I do have my soldiers, in case you've forgotten."
