Lord of the Rings Guild
Trutharchivist replied to King Aragorn of Gondor's topic in Social Groups, Clans, & Guilds
I didn't like RoP, but I am ready to protect this prospect. You see, in ancient greece, they didn't believe in gravity the way we think it works. They thought that things made mostly of the elements earth and water are going down,to their sources, while fire and air went up for the sane reason - their origin was in the sky. In this way, a rock does "look down", as it's fully made of earth; but a paper ship has enough air in it that it can look up - thus, float. Completely and utterly wrong - yes. Still has some meaning behind it, though. By third book, I assume you mean the Return of the King. If so, I'm kind of surprised: you survived all the travel in the first book, only to stop because... Well, what did you find boring there? Honest question. -
I'm reading The Stormlight Archive for the first time
Trutharchivist replied to Amira's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, character interaction in itself can be interesting, but I guess it's just Shallan cracking jokes on Kaladin, so it's not really aĺl that much. Then again... You like action, and don't like Kaladin without his powers. So... it's not really surprising that you don't like this section much. I can get your impatient. It's kind of odd, how Kaladin thinks he somehow rescued Shallan when he just had a stab of Stormlight - with no evidence he slowed down his own descent, not to speak that of others. But hey, that's just an opinion.... And how she thinks she rescued him... Well, to be fair, we don't know for sure what their limits are yet. -
"In a way, I guess..." Lightning drew his head closer to Klade. "Yeah, it reeks of your hands mostly." He drew back. "So currently, do you have anything besides fire magic?" He paused a moment, shifting his wings. "Also, you said you hunted... Monsters? What kind of creatures ate included in this category? Not intelligent ones, I hope."
-
"So... I guess I can leave you here with Lightning." Said Galard. "It will do him good - he feels a little left out." "I'm right here, you know." Said Lightning, breathing out a small flame. "You could have the decency to take it to heart. And this place could've had the decency of attracting more than three dragons." "So there are two more?" Said Galard. "Hmm... Interesting." "There was also another reptile downstairs, I think - I caught a whiff of its smell, but it's gone now. As are those dragons. Klade here, though... You have an interesting smell. Care to elaborate on it?" "I'll leave you two at it," said Galard, pointing at the stairs, "but I think I'll go eat now, if you don't mind." He went downstairs, taking note of the posters. The research one seemed interesting, perhaps - maybe he'll join it later. He went to the kitchen to grab something for lunch.
-
Galard shuddered. "You could say so. You could also say 'terrifying'. We're still learning to deal with them." He shook his head and straightened. "Lucky for us, they aren't very intelligent. And they don't often come down from the mountains." "Lucky for them, you mean." Said Lightning. "Let them come down! I'd like a few more kebabs in the near future." Galard rolled his eyes. "I don't think this was what you said when we were on the mountains. I remember something more akin to a hypnosied growls. And a distinct distaste for goat-meat ever since." "Well, it isn't my fault if your memory is flawed." Said Lightning. "Really? If you want, I can probably ask Nath to conjure some goat meat for you. How would you like that?" "Oh, I would like that very much! But aren't you forgetting our guest? Really, Gal, I thought your short term memory, at least, was still functioning." "Don't you dare call me that agai-" started Galard, then paused, recalling that he really did had a guest. "I apologise. It appears hearing humans nearly wiped out his kind somewhere didn't do well with Lightning ego, so he feels duty-bound to raise it to it's former glory." "Hey!" Lightning protested. "I'm not-" "Anyway," Galard cut him in the middle, "we might as well go to lunch - I'm starving." "No you aren't, you just want me out of the loop again!" Complained Lightning. "We ate together, and I'm not hungry yet!" "That's because dragon and human digestion systems are different. You ate quite a lot this morning, Light." "Oh, come on! It still-" "Shall we go get lunch, then?" Asked Galard quickly.
-
"Not as dangerous as dragons, trolls." Said Lightning, settling to a point where he faced Klade, his head to Galard's right. "Well, Lightning," said Galard, turning to him, "I must disagree this time. You do remember they captured us both, right?" Lightning turned his head to Galard. "And I released us both! With my fire breath! What were you doing at the time, care to remind me?" "The same thing you were doing when a troll tied your wings, I'd guess, you hexamembraned reptilian!" Replied Galard. "That's not an answer. Or an insult. You're really bad at this." Said Lightning, chuckling. "Admit it. We dragons are superior." Galard just rolled his eyes and turned back to Klade. "To actually answer your question, trolls are humanlike creatures that live on and under the mountains surrounding the valley where I come from. They're averagely bigger than the tallest human, and aren't very smart. They eat most anything they can lay their hands on - they don't see eating humans or dragons as cannibalism, eating one of their own, though..." He sighed. "Being in their caves was an unpleasant experience, anyway. But it saved us from the hypnotic flesh-eating mountain goats."
-
Galard frowned. "... I guess it is odd? But isn't it just as odd that most of us are human? In my world there are trolls, too. If you expect variation, don't you think the sameness is more of a question?" Lightning behind him snorted, moving his head to be just above Galard and Klade. "Yeah, mr. Puny human, wouldn't it make more sense if more worlds had dragons but not humans? What makes you think creatures like you should be the norm?"
-
"Feed on magic?" Said Lightning. "Is that more filling than cattle, somehow?" He snorted, producing a line of smoke. But he was obviously disturbed by the revelation that in another world, his species reached near extinction. Galard frowned. "You talk about magic as if it's an essence or energy into itself. The magic I know is more about talent; though maybe dragons' fire-breathing works in a similar way." He looked thoughtful. "The magic I can use just manipulates the medium through which matter flows. It's not some kind of energy being produced."

Hey, so... This exists! You can ask me stuff, I suppose. You can even ask things that promote elaborate discussions like tge one above! Only, maybe going to a PM over the "long" part is a good idea. Which just reminds me I still didn't answer Ixthos... I'll get to that eventually! Anyway, ask away! The OP has some stuff about preferences for questions.

I'm reading The Stormlight Archive for the first time
Trutharchivist replied to Amira's topic in Stormlight Archive
That's ought to be interesting. Kalafin at jail leads to some fascinating stuff, IMO - can't wait for you to see them! This is my favorite book in SA - mostly due to some chapters you are yet to read that I loved, and I suspect you might dislike. Oh well, everyone sees things differently. For example, I don't really care much about Szeth. Also, I'm kind of disappointed that there was a religious discussion that mentioned Judaism I missed here! I know, it's not the point of this thread, but I'm kind of interested in such discussions. There's a thread for religious discussion in General Discussion, if anyone here is interested, and I'm open for questions about Judaism. (Yes, I had to say that, thank you.) Anyway, good reading! -
So, in case anyone cares:
I actually started working on my Faunologos book! It's going to be one about humans that will feature the magic system. So far I've written a tad over 2000 words, and even if it doesn't seem like much - I actually wrote something. And I have plans for what's next. This is basically the first time I allow myself to be optimistic about the whole ordeal.
Don't worry, though, it'll fie off quickly.
Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

Frustration officially ascended to Sandersonhood. Obviously, TwiLyghtSanSparklehood is above even that, but it's hard to compete with that. I mean, they're the God Beyond!

Well... It's the leader of a thieves' crew, from Mistborn. Did you read this one?

Hey! When it comes to committing heresies against Vorinism, no one does it better than my sect! We're also deadly, in that most everyone who joins us ends up dead.

"In a way, I guess. They can use Ether channeling - as can humans. It comes more naturally to dragons, though, as they use it for their flight." Galard chuckled. "After all, it's not physically possible for such large creatures to normally fly with so small wings." "Don't forget the curses." Said Lightning. "When a dragon draws their final breath, they can lay a curse on anyone they know the names of." He shifted in place a bit. "Useful for when you want revenge on the puny human that killed you. We need a person's birth name for that one, though." "But," concluded Galard, "nothing behind that, really. Unless you count the fire breathing, which, admittedly, no one's been able to explain."

Ask him to tell me a story of his choosing. Preferably not the Dog and the Dragon, though, since I've heard it before. Then ask him about the shattering, I guess. WWYDIYF an aether IYP?- 1057 replies

Galard nodded, somewhat wistfully. "It's pretty much the same in my world. Dragons are hated and hunted by most humans. I come from a specific culture which, in elden times, worshipped dragons. The kingdom which they were part of didn't like it, and so they tried annihilating them. Legends say they were saved by a thunder of dragons, which moved mountains to surround the land where my ancestors lived." He sighed. "I was born and grew up in a valley - alongside Lightning here. My people no longer worship dragons, exactly, but we're in a close relationship with them. We were in for something of a shock when we crossed the mountains, Lightning and I." "We weren't accepted very well by the locals. There was this one human who accepted Galard as an apprentice - long story - and I had to move in with a few dragons that lived about ten miles away from the city. It was all a huge mess until we found a place in between - the university was located close enough to the dragons' lairs. We had to work put a treaty between humans and dragons, and it didn't really hold up." "... And that's our story, I guess. Which isn't too much related to what you were saying. Anything else?"
-
Galard took the offered hand and shook it. "I see..." He said. "In my world, all dragons speak. Some of them have fondness to riddles. A lot aren't as friendly as Lightning-" "To humans, he means. They were perfectly polite to me. Unlike some of these new human friends of yours..." "Well, yeah. It's cultural; in my village, dragons and humans lived together in peace. In the city... Not as much. It's not called dragonstail for having dragons as guests for dinner, let me tell you that..."
