"Very well." The man grabbed a few garnets off a side table, inserted them into a metal glove-like thing, then put on the glove and placed his hands tenderly on Harmony's arm. "That doesn't hurt too much, does it?"

"Oh." Fadran chuckled. "I may or may not have 'borrowed' a few from a land inhabited by giants, some really tall bean plants, and a strange abundance of boys named 'Jack.'"

The doctor took off the bandage, then examined the wound. "Yes, that's... pretty bad."

The soldier's eyes thin into a scowl. "What's your deal? You come into this place pretending to be some witless idiot, and now you're off playing soldier connoisseur?"

"After we finished my spellbook... or, well, we never really finished it... but after we finished what we thought we needed to know, he sent me back home. I had visited me parents for, like, the holidays and stuff, but he said it wasn't healthy for me to be away from them for so long. We were pen pals for awhile, but then his messages stopped coming, and... then news reached out house that he had died one night." Val took a deep, shivering breath. "And then my parents sent me off to school anyways."
