  5. So my dad was teasing us teenage folks by shortening words and such. Normal dad behavior, right?

  8. "Whatever path you think you're pursuing," Elya said, "I recommend you stop. Now."
  9. Elya's composure dropped for just a second. Her breathing cut out, her eyes widened, and an uncanny shaking took her hands. She squeezed her fist, sucked in a breath, then put herself back in control. Then ran her sword through the Pacis's neck.

  11. Elya sheathed her katana. "There are a lot of 'she's in the Pacis and government. You might have to be more specific."
  12. Lina nodded, holding the spell with only a fraction of her magic.
  13. A sphere of golden light suddenly appeared in front of the two of them, hovering a few feet above the ground.
  14. Elya strode towards the two of them, wiping off the blood from her blade across her arm and flicking away the rest. She sheathed her blade. "How many Pacis have you interrogated?"
  15. Lina nodded. "I see. Well... in that case..." She pulled out her spellbook, flipped to one of the earlier pages, and started muttering the specifics of a spell under her breath.
  16. Elya fell into a stance, controlling her breath carefully. She felt the wind, the street, the world around; and focused pinpoint on the Pacis about to shoot her. She put herself light on her toes, waiting for a fraction of a second to exhale and concentrate in the moment between breaths. In an instant she knew where they were aiming--and she dodged right up between the trajectories. The gunfire went off, and the bullets zipped away from her without leaving so much as a scratch. She dashed towards the Pacis between shots, reading their movements, lines of sight, and overcompensated pivots to redirect their weapons. Elya leapt over the next few bullets without any trouble, feeling all the elements around her to read where she'd land. Hitting the ground, she swept her katana across two Pacis, enacting cries of pain and droplets of blood. She skirted around the next few, avoiding more bullets. They started improving in accuracy, and she had to stay on her toes to keep away. Gunshots, bullets flying, her sword flashing in the lamplight; she balanced it all, filtering out everything unimportant and hyperfixating on everything else. Duck one bullet, dash up and slash. Weave between two more, cut down another Pacis. Kick off a wall to dodge another shot--this one more accurate than the rest. It grazed across her arm, but she filtered the pain. Elya finished the last Pacis with her backwards momentum, hitting him in the chest with the end of the blade before whipping around to slice. She let out a puff of breath, then gave herself a moment to see how the other one was doing.
  17. "There are a number of things like that in this world. What kind of energy are you seeking to detect?"
  18. "I most likely can. I've been studying it for... quite a long time, now." She smiled. "So what is it that you want assistance with?"
  19. Elya drew her sword: a perfectly silver katana, balanced to her strength as precisely as possible. She grasped it in both hands before her, controlling her breathing into a slow, methodical rhythm.
  20. "You can call me Lina."
  21. "Oh." Elya shrugged. "Well, I'd be happy to make your second member, then."
  22. She opened her eyes. "Hello. I, ahh... I think I neglected to ask your name."
