  4. Aight. Almost 2023.

Here's a complete synopsis of Fadran's year, from off the top of my head:

    • 2022 started as 2020 part... three??? I swear nothing has ever happened since then.
    • Every Data Table
      • The scrollover text says "I'm hoping 2022 is relatively normal because I don't know what symbol comes after the asterisk and the dagger."
    • Was it this year I went to TABC with Tesh? I think it was. That was fun.
    • It was also this year that I got a job working at Coldstone. That was awful. Remind me never to work customer service, and defintely remind me never to work in the food industry.
      • I quit that job. It sucked.
    • And then after that I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL. I mean, how friggin crazy is that? I wasn't valedectorian or anywhere near that kind of thing, but I got through it.
      • And now I'm going to college soon??? Yeesh man. I don't understand how I got this far on my two pathetic little legs and my two pathetic little brain cells.
    • Anyways, then I got really depressed again. And for an extended period of time. Several months I was just doing nothing and getting nothing done, and honestly it was just the worst. I didn't read, I didn't write, I didn't work - I just sat at the computer and vegged - for months. It got really bad, actually, until I finally convinced myself to get another job.
    • Enter my job at Target. It was... actually okay! Suddenly I was keeping busy and getting stuff done - and getting paid some actual monee for it! I have a good stack of savings for college now.
    • I quit that somewhat recently for... other reasons. It's probably not a good thing for me to talk about (for other peoples' privacy), but some stuff happened recently and I've been REALLY depressed. I might've made another status update about it, but... probably not. Suffice it to say that I've was really struggling up until recently just every day constantly.
    • Honestly I'm kind of worried about college now. I don't know what kind of scud is going to go down or if I'll be able to deal with it. Support for the future would be appreciated.
    • Buuuuuuuut for now I'm fine! I'm on vacation in California visiting family. It's been pretty relaxing so far, 'cause we're not going hours out of our way to visit every single second cousin my dad met once at a Denny's eighty years ago like we did last time we visited; just hanging out with grandparents and cousins and such. I'll be leaving for college just a couple days after we get back.
    • Uhh... what're some other things that happened...
    • Stuff I wrote:
      • A short story about railroad pirates - 6/10 (Eh)
      • Started a space opera novel - 9/10 (Pretty good so far)
      • Started redrafting the Iconar Collective and even finished the first act - 8/10 (Not as good but whatever)
      • Some other things?
    • Stuff I tried:
      • Learning to program (gave up)
      • Learning to draw (getting better)
      • Eat healthier (doing okay?)
    • Stuff I failed:
      • Being a good person (not a joke)
    • I haven't actually finished reading The Lost Metal yet. I should probably get on that; dunno how much time I'll have in college.
    • IF YOU'RE IN ARCHIPELAGO OR WHITE IRON THEN PLZ GO REPLY TO MY THINGS I LITERALLY LIVE AND BREATH RPS
    • And then we get to today.
    • We really need to push New Year's Eve back to February.
      • Pros:
        • We fix the July/August problem to make September, October, November, and December actually be months 7, 8, 9, and 10
        • December becomes a lot less busy
        • February finally gets a thing besides being short
        • Leap days become a lot easier
        • Every programmer on the face of the planet has to fix everything they've ever made lest the digital world fall to chaos
      • Cons:
        • None
    • Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
    • Don't die

Happy new year! Good luck with college. If you need to, get a chicken, then hypnotize it. When somebody erases the line, it will kill them and you will be safe from them. Chickens are excellent luck charms.

  5. “Adventure, of course.” Vance brought out his knives. “Honestly, I just like going out and doing things and learning things. I spent awhile going out on my own, ‘cause my sister and I never really had the same idea of a good adventure.”
  6. Vance shook his head in disbelief. “So to everyone back at your home you just… vanished?”
  7. “What a pretty name.” Vance looked over at Kealie. “Why’d you leave?“
  8. “Tell me about them.” Vance stepped over some rocks. “If you don’t mind.”
  9. A day-ish later… ”So… remind me where you’re from?”
  10. Nothing save that dagger had so much as scratched the glengal so far, and as it stood they probably didn’t have a single attack capable of changing that - at least, not any they were willing to unleash yet. With enough power Kaeni probably could roast that thing from the inside out, but concentrated flame like that would undoubtedly knock her out for hours afterwards. Maybe Mercury would try to carry her up, but… No, that wasn’t the solution here. This creature had a weak point, and they were going to exploit it. Even with it well aware of their strategy, it wouldn’t be able to hold out forever against three assailaints. All they needed was a single mistake; just one second of an opening. Mercury’s full-body technique made her faster and more reflexive than any natural creature—with a split-second opening, she could hit it. So Kaeni charged at the glengal, the fear in her heart burned away by determination. She cut a path forwards with a slash of flame vaporizing the creature’s foaming spit, then vaulted with a kick of fire over its pincer and to its back. Dashing across the exoskeleton, the blade poking out just to her right, E;la pushing for it to move, Mercury darting about for an opening to the other side… We can get it from above! Kaeni realized. It’s not fast enough to— The tail was suddenly rocketing towards her, in an instant just an inch from her chest. Sh— Kaeni slipped, the exoskeleton sliding about from underneath her. For an instant her footing was gone, and for an instant she was weightless. The glengal had moved— Mercury was trying to find another way around, it seemed. It had moved out from under her, and the stinger changed trajectory, if only by a little. M-move… Where’s your hand? Block it— I don’t… I don’t want to die… The stinger snapped at just above her sternum. Before she knew it Kaeni was flying backwards, and just instants after cracked into a vein of crystal. It shattered on impact, breaking her momentum and littering the ground she fell onto. All the air in her lungs crashed away, leaving her choked and covered in glowing amber blood. The pain came in moments after, forcing her eyes shut and muscles taught. There wasn’t any breath to scream or cry. Stabs all across the back of her arms and neck, the cold crackling of broken bones, the awful agony of where that glengal had hit her… But it occurred to her that she was still alive. It’s possible. Kaeni thought through each stab of pain. We can defeat it. From above. If Mercury can get above, there’s a split second to hit it… They could still win @The Wandering Wizard @PyroPhile @Szeth_Pancakes @Tani
  11. Vance gave her a sideways glance, smiling a little at her childlike wonder. I've always kind of wanted a little sister... Meanwhile... Ultimately, the problem with talent was that it always seemed to lead to failure. Without talent, one could not truly fail. One could put in effort towards a goal, but would always fall short in the end. No commonfolk could become half the warrior that someone with the talent for a warrior could. This was never out of any shortcoming, however, because the common folks never stood a chance in the first place. With talent it was different. Talent was intrinsic and unimpeachable. To be born a warrior was to become a warrior; it would be your calling in life. No man, god, or horror had any right to deny that from you. Yet in this talent seemed always come the lacking spirit of leisure and laziness; that a person of talent will always enjoy their success as a matter of course, and never truly push that talent to and beyond its limits. So many weaklings. So many squanderers. So many souls treading lightly and holding their destinies at ar’s length. Such indigence, in fact, that it seemed they never deserved that talent at all. And Lady M just always seemed to stumble upon these sorts of failures nowadays. “Th-they were more powerful than they looked!” The latest squanderer was stuttering. They always stuttered in her presence; every one. “And they fooled me with a false surrender. It wasn’t my own failing, I swear!” Lady M rested her cheek onto her hand, leaning against her right arm. “Fooled you, you say? A true spellcaster must never be fooled. You let your guard down as you always do. Trusting an enemy? Really, Arcaene. I thought I taught you better.” “Th… These weren’t any usual warriors. Not the everyday mercenary rabble. One of them routed most of my summons by himself, and another… her magic…” The failure shook her head, as if still in disbelief, then snapped out of her gaze and looked back at her Lady. “I was trying to complete that research you assigned me, and their leader volunteered as a sacrifice. But he counted on them following him… to… try to teach them a lesson? I think he was their combat instructor.” She almost retorted again, then stopped herself. “A lesson, you say?” “I… they were unremarkable at best. Little more than the basics you taught me.” Interesting. “My ‘basics’ are more advanced than many spellcasters will ever learn in their life. Go on.” “He…” The once-failure racked her memory for a moment. “...Said something about domains, come to think of it.” So it was them. In that case… “The aether stone was taken from your mansion,” Lady M said, “just last night. That’s why I summoned you here.” “...Aether stone?” “I planted it there just in case. Why needn’t concern you. I’ve been less disturbed by your retreat than I was by someone finding that last night.” Lady M sat up to look her child in the eye. “I was worried the thief might’ve been one of my enemies, but now…” A single experienced warrior and a group of students happening to find an almost perfectly concealed layer domain? Talent indeed. “I’ll make you a deal, Arcaene,” Lady M said. “Find me these individuals. Do that and I will forgive you this failure.” She dropped onto her fist again, feeling… different. “Mmm… perhaps I’ll even grant you that knowledge you’ve been seeking.” “M-my lady!” M waved her off with a singsong hum. “Dismissed, little child.” @Ookla the Inverted
  12. "It's a house I inherited from my father. Kinda small, edge of town, lots of space around it... cozy sort of place. You'll like it."
  13. Vance chuckled. "Orteo is not a small town. This place is called Hackney. I was staying there for a bit before running into you guys. Cute little place; tomato fields, fountain plaza, light festivals now and again... We'll hire a wagon there and bring it back to the mansion, fetch Quest and Antin, then take all our stuff and get to my place."
